When I first saw this 20 years ago or so and heard that Spike was called William the Bloody beacause of his bloody awful petry I completely lost it! I was laughing for so long! It is still hilarious to this day! I am so surprised no one else laugh like an idiot at this. You didn’t react at all. Anyone else who think this was really funny?

Fool for Love and Darla back-to-back. We have been blessed. 😍😍 Very sorry to hear about the rl stuff, Liam. I hope this arc hasn't been too hard on you.

To be fair, James Marsters was playing those early scenes with hints of unacknowledged feeling that went beyond what was in the script.

This episode is a definite favorite of mine. It fleshes out Spike so much and really propels his character forward for me. I really enjoy the editing as well. I teared up at the end when he patted her shoulder and sat quietly. It's oddly probably exactly what Buffy needed in that moment. Someone who could accept that she didn't want to talk about it, and just be there for her. Love the flashbacks. I just love season 5 so much. Thanks!

One of my all time fav episodes. As somebody else has said - not only does his infamous coat coat come from a slayer victory but also his eye brow scar! I love the “lessons” he gives buffy and how they spar/ dance... “you think we’re dancing?!” “That’s all we’ve ever done.” I love the cuts and the flashbacks, and how much depth and layer is added to an already awesome character... i tuly believe there is alot of human william inside spike still and its great to see him battle back and forth internally with it since falling for buffy... that scene at the end... “whats wrong? Is there something I can do?” And his little pat on her shoulder... ah! My heart! loved your reaction, then your reaction to your reaction haha “not sure i should have loved that moment as much as I did!” Haha! Cannot wait for more, Liam! :)

I truly agree! Season 5 is basically has the least filler-ish and most cohesive season in my opinion. I love Season 6 and 7 but Season 5 is hard to beat as my favorite!

This comment *may* contain slight expectation spoilers, Liam, so it's just meant for fellow patrons. Okay so: Season 5 of BTVS is, in my opinion, the pinnacle of television. Not to be too wanky about it. But it's true. It's just so, so good. Love all the other seasons too, of course. In fact, other seasons contain some of my absolute favourite episodes from the show. But season 5 is just in a league of its own. [@ other patreons, let me know if you feel comments like this are indeed spoilery and do need the warning I added at the start? I wasn't sure, so I added a warning just in case. I don't want to end up giving a reactor the impression that subsequent seasons aren't as good at this one, as that's incredibly subjective. And I certainly don't want to say anything that would affect expectations...just really felt like expressing my admiration for this season on this video!]

I'm not a fan of him ever since he became a love interest. He was more fun outside of the love interest.

That scene with Spike, Drusilla, Angelus and Darla walking in slow mo is one of the best moments in the show!

Since vampires would tend to heal, I like to think it was some sort of holy or blessed sword she used, that was able to mark him with the scar.

I love when Buffy/Angel do flashback episodes, and this one is top notch.
Also, did you notice that the slayer from China is the one who gives Spike his scar above his left eye? That is actually a scar that James Marsters has. When they were first looking at his character he told the makeup artist that he has the scar and that they could just fill it in. Instead, they made it a part of his character by emphasizing it, and in this episode, they give the story as to how he got it. :D

YES. Like many others, this is one of my favourite episodes of the season and the entire show - something of a landmark. Last episode I think you were saying you hoped to see more focus on Spike and it was so hard not to say anything! I'm glad you weren't spoiled about anything for this! :D

This is an excellent comparison, I agree. Each change to his appearance and accent and name feels like him trying hard to put distance between himself and William.

For a character that was supposed to be killed off after a handful of episodes, Spike's depth of character is miraculous. They make it seem almost inevitable that he would fall in love with Buffy. They retroactively make Spike's interactions with Buffy in s2 feel laden with unacknowledged feeling. This episode brings Spike's character to a whole new level, who knew he could get even better?

To me, this is not just one of the best episodes of Buffy, it's one of the best hours of television ever produced. It's just pure brilliance from beginning to end.

This is one of my favorite episode of Buffy. The first time I saw it I was so surprised to find out about Spike past. But at the same time it makes perfect sense. I love the contrast between him and Angelus. I think it’s the first time that we have our four main vampires on the screen together.
James Marsters is simply phenomenal in this episode, every aspect of the character from human William to chipped Spike in love with Buffy is portrayed perfectly.

Now you've seen what a chaos demon looks like as Spike described to Willow in Lovers Walk how Dru was cheating on him with a chaos demon lol love these little full circles people don't notice when watching

I actually think William and Spike are more similar than dissimilar. It's like that scene in "Restless" when Buffy rips off Willow's costume. Spike could easily have had a similar nightmare.

They accomplished so many things at once. We see Buffy getting seriously injured. The flashbacks filled in Spike's history, both with the Slayers and with his life pre-vampire. Simultaneously we're exploring Buffy's psychology. We learned that Joyce needs to go to the hospital for tests. And then we got a significant shift in Buffy and Spike's relationship. That is some pretty impressive writing.

The storyline, the pacing, the additional character layers that are revealed, the brilliant use of editing, this is about as perfectly constructed an episode as you can get with Buffy.

This is how flashback episodes should be. One of my favorites of the season.
