Buffy the Vampire Slayer - 5x01 “Buffy vs. Dracula” FULL REACTION

Eh Leather pants aren't that unreasonable but wool sweaters are worth questinoning.

Kara Michelle

I tend to get the episodes provided for me, not on DVDs

Liam, I gotta ask, how did you avoid the main titles of the episodes? They're everywhere, whenever you bring up the ep, including on the DVDs. Wait, they are on the DVDs, right? It's great that you were able to do that however you did it, otherwise this episode would have been spoiled for you, as it's called Buffy vs Dracula. LOL

Raven Dark

Okay, but why is Buffy wearing wool sweaters and leather pants in Southern California in August? I suspend disbelief as much as possible, but that is where I draw the line! ;)

I don’t see this. You might want to (a.) try a different browser (the video viewer chrome is generated by your browser, not Dropbox) or (b.) if your watching on a computer (rather than a pad or phone) try moving your mouse cursor outside the viewing area; if you do that, the episode title and progress bar might disappear after a few seconds.

Steve Maxey

"Don't know how i'm going to stand waiting for more episodes" Think of one of your favourite episodes, and then watch 3 or 4 reactors' vids in a row. It's fun.

UTU49

I remember being so confused and thinking I missed an episode

Sarah McKinlay

I will never forget how Season 5 made me feel back then, when I first watch it and even after re-watching it... I think that if I post what kinds of different emotions I felt, it would be considered spoilers so I'll just leave it at that. LOL

Stephen Mintac

That one is classic! Every time I watch Nicholas B act it out, I always thing it's so funny.

Stephen Mintac

Ha! That ending reaction.

Stephen Mintac

"Von, twooo, three...three victims, mwuahahahaaa!" Still funny after all these years. 👍 Taking on an icon like Dracula was a risky move, but I think it really worked for the show. Glad you enjoyed! Thank you for the reaction!

Miz Mons

Li, is there any way you can set the react visual box of the episode in the center right instead of top right? Dropbox blocks out the top sixth of my screen with the episode title, so about the top third of what you are reacting to, and the bottom sixth with the timer bar. I was thinking of dropping a different Reactor who used drop box (though I would not drop you). Unless someone knows how to remove them from the screen?

Richard Lucas

I did not know that about the actor! I keep hoping Liam will add Xena, he would love it so much!

Richard Lucas

Dawn was cool, but I think they wanted to wait for her to grow up a bit and that’s why they sent her away.

Richard Lucas

Great reaction, Liam! So much fun. Your "wtf!" at the end was everything I hoped it would be hahaha! Hold on tight, this season is a ride! The episode is a lot of fun. I never liked it much back in the day, but looking at it recently, it really does a great job setting up a lot of little things for the different characters. It took me years to notice, but thats the joy of this show. No matter how many times I watch, i notice new things or feel differently about situations :) Eeep! Don't know how i'm going to stand waiting for more episodes lol

Holi117

Love it.

Holi117

The WB ran a 90-second promo leading into this with clips of all seasons, esp. "Restless," and concluding with that quote combining both Tara and Dracula. Pretty cool. https://youtu.be/RlKvXvHLEEI

Rachael

So the story behind this episode is that the writers wanted Buffy to face a powerful, legendary vampire who was famous like Dracula to show how powerful and legendary Buffy herself has become, and they kept describing him "like Dracula, but..." until someone said, "Why not just use Dracula? He's in the public domain."

Rachael

If one was murdered by vampires the three sisters would be the way to go.

Steve Quast

Yeah, this is the worst episode of season 5 in my opinion. Season 5 is like a roller coaster with impeccable pacing, get ready for the ride of your life with one of the best seasons of TV shows in history in my opinion.

Cameron Rayburn

You know the first few moments of a roller coaster, where you're just slowly ticking up an incline. and then you're briefly stopped at the top before the big drop? That's this episode. 😁 Oh boy, here we go! I love you season 5!

Sisnerdly

The only inconsistency with Stoker's Dracula in terms of powers is how he can/can't be killed, which makes Spike's comments a little strange. Dracula can only be killed by decapitating and mutilating his body when he is in his coffin. He doesn't die from stakes or from sunlight. Buffy's stake is not able to kill him, but in the book, that wouldn't even harm him. I do love Drac's camp celebrity persona, though. And Spike's apparent jealousy.

Moon Logic

The “fun with casting” bit here is that Dracula was played by Rudolf Martin, who had played Sarah Michelle Gellar’s boyfriend on All My Children. Anyway! This season is a standout to me for several reasons, including the fact that I basically missed it entirely when it happened due to being out of contact with TV for a year, (though I managed to finagle watching the series finale of Xena.) I think you will receive season five very well, and am geared up for it.

Koz

With regards credits, I think you are usually safe by around episode 5, as by the time episode 1 of a season was airing, they were still in production, and only had the first 4 episodes "in the can" to use footage from.

Graeme McCutcheon

Yes, like the ones for "Parting Gifts." They don't spoil Wesley and they fool you into hoping that the Oracles may actually save Doyle. They're perfect.

Moon Logic

You shouldn't tempt the fates that way.

UTU49

Who’s Dawn?

Vicky N

Who is convincing so many reactors that opening credits constitute spoilers?! The opening credits are what the show-runners mean for you to see, and they're what every single viewer saw at the time of airing (not to mention that It's actually fun to watch on as reactors see new credits for the first time...and notice changes if/when they occur...)

cs

Liam: "Fuck me up, season 5." Season 5: "Did he? Did he just call me out? Oh, he better not have!"

Moon Logic

I always liked her too, even in the early seasons

Love this season! ...I love all the seasons, but 5 and 6 especially. I'm honestly not surprised Liam doesn't remember Buffy having a sister, considering how under-written her character has been ...which itself is surprising, considering it's Joss Whedon. I think she's mostly just been there to represent the child-like innocence and ignorance of "normal" people in the Buffy-verse, something Buffy herself has lost and can never have again (which of course reflects the main theme of the show... becoming an adult), but she just comes off as super annoying... and forgetable, apparently! 😂

I'm pretty sure that was vague enough to not contain any spoilers... or even HINTS.

UTU49

I love how they used Dracula. He wasn't even a villain. He wanted Buffy as a companion. The guy was frickin LONELY. What an interesting quality for a "villain". Buffy asks Giles to help her to learn more about Slayers... as a DIRECT RESULT of her encounter with Dracula. Very cool.

UTU49

What's up with Buffy's younger sister? Remember, not everything in the Buffyverse actually makes sense. Remember Restless? Viewers find Buffy's sister confusing because she didn't appear very much in the earlier seasons. Just try not to worry about it too much. :)

UTU49

Season 5 is my favorite overall season. I'm so ready for this.

Katherine Thoreson

Wait do you seriously not remember Buffy's sister? I know some found her annoying in the early seasons but at the very least I would think she was memorable. Honestly I always liked her myself, even way back in S1. And her staking her first vampire was such a powerful moment!

Duck

This episode is really bizarre so I'm glad you liked it, I've always enjoyed it. Maybe not as much as Angel's season premiere, but it's not a competition or anything. I like your theory about why Xander was so easily enthralled. It's an interesting topic, the Master had thrall powers too that also worked on Buffy and then stopped working after he killed her. But the breaking of the thrall in this ep didn't happen after he bit her, it was when she drank his blood, which obv didn't happen with the Master. (I didn't come up with this theory, but) it might have to do "wanting it" like Dracula said. Buffy didn't want to get bit, but she wanted to know what he knew about her power. After she drank his blood, she saw those flashes and I guess assumed that was what he was trying to communicate and didn't need him anymore, so the thrall broke. With the Master, she had resolved to go down into his lair to fulfill her destiny, and so once she did, he no longer had that power over her. "You so amped about hell? Go there." "How do you like my darkness now?"

KT

I think you missed the part where Dracula says "You think you know who you are, what's to come? You haven't even begun." Lifted directly from 'Restless.'

Tania

Mine too!

Miah

My favorite season of Buffy! I'm so excited!!! :D

Jenn Rose

Dracula controls wolves--of which there are a good few in California, though I feel like a coyote might have been a better low creature for him to control in the setting. (Yes, I've read that book a couple of times--or, you know, six--because I am a geek who read through as many of the books Stephen King mentioned in Danse Macabre as I could...) I like that they made it kind of a satire, pulling the old mythos into the new mythos and poking fun at both. The idea of rock star Drac was fun, especially with Anya reveling in her old groupie days.

FernWithy

His outrage at the end was hilarious

Tania

I always loved her until Xander's spell made her fall in love with him in Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered. That was just weird.

Miah

I agree, as with Angel, there's nothing there you don't already know, nothing spoiler-y

You don't remember Buffy's sister..? That's weird! She's usually about bugging Giles, she wasnt in season 4 as much as they didn't do many scenes at Buffy's house but she was a regular in seasons 1-3 🤔

With regard to you avoiding the opening credits, I really think you should watch them next episode. However, if you guys disagree, please let him know.

Miah

I don't think this is the strongest season opener, but the girls fangirling over Dracula, Xander as Renfield (and mocking Dracula's accent by aping Count von Count), and Giles intending to "nuzzle" the sisters to death were all great. There's nearly always something to love in a BtVS episode.

Bean's friend

One of my favorite episodes. I was a little confused though, why were you surprised at the end of the episode?! You have seen Buffy's sister before, several times. Remember her turning into one of the monsters in the Halloween episode!. She grabbed the old lady and Willow kept yelling at her to stop ??? Or “Get the hell away from my sister!” I liked when she hit Spike over the head. That kid is so brave :). She really liked the cookies Ted made for Buffy and their mom. Its sad that Joyce sent her to went to live with her dad after Buffy ran away. I remember Joyce and her ex-husband arguing about Buffy while she washing her face in the bathroom. Must have been tough to get separated from your mom and sister at the same time.

Collete L

The unholy prince... bater.

Jarrod Wild

I like the campiness of this one, the title "Buffy vs Dracula" says it all. Bram Stoker's Dracula could change into mist or vapor, creatures like wolves, bats, rats, etc... He needs to sleep in soil from his home to maintain his power, he can hypnotize and force his will onto others. So Xander becomes his Renfield (including the bug eating) and Buffy is (initially) helpless against his charms. Plus there are his gypsy vamps. And of course he *always* comes back. :)

Jarrod Wild

4.50am .. I am not going to admit that I waited up for this 😂

"The dark master..... bater."
