In the basement, you did wait, wondering what they would do And you could not accept the fate of three thousand volts through you And there is nothing you could say, only what you should have done And you should have walked away, instead you're living on the run Now it's coming for the sea, and it's moving through the trees It is the wind before your hand as it's coming down upon me You hide nothing Just believe it We all see it Sayid is such a wonderful character: competent, noble, decisive, highly intelligent in both an emotional and technical sense. And yet, he does have a dark side; he sure as hell wasn’t tickling his victims in that room. When Nadia describes the mutilations she went under, I got the feeling that Sayid had done similar acts. And really, what kind of man is he that he can’t torture someone he cares about, but that he can torture anyone at all? But even with that pragmatic ruthlessness (which is doubtlessly essential to survival) he’s still insightful and compassionate. In contrast to Sawyer the week before (which I think you pointed out) Sayid seeks to redeem himself actively; it makes him so impressive and easy to root for in spite of having done some truly horrible things. Even after Danielle tortures and nearly kills him, he still regards her with compassion and empathy. Hurley is another character who’s insightful of the human condition, and I think he’s much smarter than even he thinks. The golf course is downright essential to keeping everyone sane, and the hypochondriac Sullivan is a good piece of writing to demonstrate that: he goes from whining to having fun in seconds. Great reaction; these might be the most action-packed and intense flashbacks we’ve had so far.

This is really well-put, agreed 100%. At the same time that this show was on, the other most popular show was 24, which has a fairly controversial depiction of Muslims.

Oh also fun tidbit if you haven't caught it. You'll find some of the characters are named after philosophers or people around that. One of the writers was a philosophy major. Rousseau and John Locke are both major philosophers.

You lamented the casual racism in the last episode from Sawyer to Sayid and I get your qualms. I remember the post 9/11 casual Islamaphobia well. That said, there is a counterpoint with the show's writing being genuinely revolutionary of its portrayal of Sayid as a character, which you're now getting to know with this episode. The war where he fought against the US was NOT that long ago when this show came out. And just 3 short years after 9/11, they wrote this complex Iraqi Muslim man who has all the complexity and humanity and three-dimensionality that all the other characters have is quite incredible in that context. That context may not be appreciated by viewers now, so just wanted to throw that out there.

Very fun seeing these episodes through your eyes, both because of the speculation on the island and the insights on the characters. Keep it up!
