We get to know Jack just a little in this episode; the first flashback and his interaction with his father is the most telling. It’s difficult, having a complex relationship with a parent, and I love the way the ice cubes clinking in the glass heralds the only appearance of Jack’s father in his heyday. John Terry, who plays Jack’s father, is perfectly cast as this alcoholic narcissist. I do wonder at his motivations for being so cruel to Jack; does he view his son as a potential rival whose ambitions must be quashed? Does he think being a hero is thankless and he’s trying to instil his own ruthlessness into Jack? Or is he just acutely aware of the fact that despite it all, he doesn’t have what it takes and Jack does? Because Jack has been nothing but impressive in the show so far. But my favourite scene has to be between Jack and Locke, their first substantial interaction. Locke might be a believer in the island, but he doesn’t really try to push that onto Jack. He just states his truth, and accepts what Jack’s is. The fact that he acknowledges that Jack’s father is likely just a hallucination shows that he’s still a largely practical person, but he does feel a connection to the island and after what he’s been through, who wouldn’t?

And made me laugh doing so. (I'm guilty of several rewinds.) - From 44:17 to 44:32 you confirmed that you recognize and appreciate the simple but unique formula currently utilized by the show. No laugh here from me, only a grin.

It takes me back to when we discussed and debated theories for this show endlessly on the internet forums back in the day. And this was OLD internet too as this show ran from 2004-2010. Social Media barely existed yet by the show's end. By the final season, I and others were able to have direct convos on early twitter with Lindelof and Cuse (who ran the show, Abrams was barely involved after the Pilot) free of most of today's social media toxicity, which wouldn't be possible today. 'twas a fun time!
