When River floated back down from Early's ship, she said, "Permission to come aboard Captain?" Mal says, "Permission granted." It's an old naval ritual to welcome a person onto a ship. Until this point, Simon had been made part of the crew, but River had essentially been first a stowaway, and then a guest/patient of Simon. In that final scene, we see Mal acknowledging that River is now a part of his crew (with all the personal commitment from Mal that this implies).

I agree. The fact it had just one season probably saved it from either running too long or there being a massive dip in quality.

I'm almost glad I didn't know about the show until after the movie was out. Not only because of the episodes airing out of order, but back in those days, when a show got cancelled, that was it. There was no such thing as a revival. Not knowing there would at least be a movie to potentially provide some closure must have been infuriating.

I love this show and would have watched seven seasons but I think the cancellation saved them from running out of ideas. My understanding is it was too expensive which is why it got canceled. Fox messed around with the episode order and never gave it a chance but it was way more ambitious than Buffy and it needed similar numbers immediately to justify the cost. Whedon did make Dollhouse a few years later so it wasnโ€™t a personal animosity between Mutant Enemy and Fox. Dollhouse is basically Severance (even stars Miss Casey) but done in a 2000s network TV style. I wouldnโ€™t recommend it for reacting but itโ€™s an interesting show.

Also, you're right about Jayne's development coming along. It was hinted at in the "The Message" when he got the letter from his mother. In short, he's so all about the benjamins, because he may very well be the only breadwinner for his sick and aged family. ๐Ÿ˜ข

Just saying, I'd be 100% into this show if they had continued on with River turning into Serenity.

Jubal Early says that he was following 'Serenity' since the Feds were tipped off in the episode "Ariel". In the episode "Trash", there's a FLASH of his ship flying past a window when Mal & Saffron are stealing the Lassiter. Others have already pointed out that the show was cancelled mid-season, hence why it's so obviously unfinished and why this episode in particular isn't a "finale" in any meaningful way. A standard season back then was anywhere from 20 to 30 episodes ("Buffy" & "Angel" each got 22 episodes per season), so we're just past the halfway point of what should have been the full first season. That's barely past the introduction. To compare, in the first season of "Angel", we hadn't yet gotten Faith's crossover and redemption, the introduction of Charles Gunn, OR the first mention of the Shanshu prophecy. The movie "Serenity" is usually described as Season 2 of this show, but sometimes it's even called the second half of Season 1 because they were still playing catchup.

this was a fun show to watch. i loved the characters and i wish we could have seen what they would have done with it had it not been cancelled. and i've only heard good things about the movie so im really excited to watch that! :)

I think it's interesting that you'd see this as less than season one Buffy. For my money this is more like if we only got a half of season five Buffy - yes, for sure it lacks the richness that you get from having a full series - or even full season - run (and also Buffy is just an iconic figure and all), but I think the episodes we do have here are pretty much top tier. But I mean YMMV.

From what I remember it wasnโ€™t just cancelled - it was axed mid-season having been originally given a 22 episode series so they didnโ€™t have the opportunity to wrap up how a single series normally would

I love how you immediately accepted the idea of River somehow 'becoming' the ship. I was a little disappointed that it wasn't true. At this point I was ready to believe she was capable of anything.
