If you remember, Buffy’s season 4 penultimate episode also wrapped up its Adam & Initiative storyline much like this episode did for Angel. According to producer Tim Minear, they were originally going to have Cordelia wake up and kill Jasmine. But, since Charisma Carpenter had just given birth in real life, she was not released yet to do any physical activity. That’s why we saw Conner do it instead. Shame!

No her name is another language unknown to man that yea does hold power over her.

I think Jasmine is my favorite Buffyverse villain. A great villain thinks they are the hero and she actually had the power and desire to bring world peace. Angel even saw that her intentions weren't completely evil when he tried to recruit her to the team at the end.

I am so excited for what is coming next. Angel season 4 was a real mixed bag, but the last season is one of my favorites in the whole Buffyverse.

R. Chang

Vincent Kartheiser is really just so impressive as an actor. To be thrown into all S4’s internal drama and to have Connor’s character torn down with the wildest storylines but still delivering such devastating and poignant performances like the one here and opposite Julie Benz’ Darla is a real testament to him.

Lilah my unkillable queen 💗

It was a real belief in the ancient world that knowing the name of a god or a demon would give you power over them. One contemporary example of this is the fairy tale Rumpelstiltskin. Knowing his name gives the woman in the story power over this mischievous imp who can do miraculous things like spinning straw into gold. The story likely has a history that goes back centuries or millennia, or that at least is based on lore from thousands of years ago. This is why I don't have any issue with calling Jasmine a demon. In the ancient world, a demon isn't always an evil spirit or a malevolent entity. The Greek word daimon meant god, perhaps a lesser god. Similar in meaning to theos or thea (god, goddess). So whatever Jasmine is, even if she is one of these mysterious powers as she claims, she probably could have been referred to in the ancient world as a demon or a god. All that to say, it's kind of interesting how the fourth season of Angel reaches back and takes inspiration from these old ideas and builds on its own lore from them. Season 4 definitely has its issues as we've all seen, but I think this is one of its most interesting aspects.

I'm not sure I fully believe her motives. If she genuinely wanted a better world, why would she immediately switch to "I'm going to kill everyone" because her powers were stripped away? To me, she seemed like she wanted worship above anything else, with world peace secondary. Once the worship went away, so did the desire for world peace. She could have humbled herself and worked with them. But no. She wanted it all her way. She was very narcissistic at her core.

Dante

Jasmine's motivations are rooted in a belief that she's doing good for the world, but her goal of creating a perfect world is impossible with someone like her at the helm. As good a front as she puts on and as genuinely well-intentioned as she might be, she's still narcissistic and petty. I think she's someone who, for all her era-long scheming, isn't the big picture person she thinks she is and doesn't take the long view.

If you thought he was good here, then you should check out the film The Unsaid, he is *phenomenal* in it!

As frustrating as he can be, I have a lot of sympathy for Connor. I love his scene in the church, where we finally see a vulnerable side of him and hear what he thinks. Jasmine is one of my favourite villains in the Buffyverse for the reasons you outlined: she was basically 100% genuine in wanting a better world, jaded by the relative apathy of the other Powers. Really excited for the finale!

One episode left of Angel S4. Looking forward to the finale reaction. Connor takes Jasmine out with a punch through her skull, but it is really hard to see (I assume for TV Standards and Guidelines reasons). I think it is supposed to be that idea that Wesley was theorizing, Jasmine is vulnerable to her "anchors to the world" thus Cordelia (or Connor) could defeat Jasmine. Always good to see Stephanie Romanov (Lilah's actress).

James Smith

Yup, both Buffy S4 and Angel S4 catch you out by defeating the big bad an episode before you expect lol! Love the stunned blinking at Lilah showing up at the end, it's quite a cliffhanger ahaha

Mollie K

I adore Connor's character so much. So unbelievably tragic and tortured. This might be his best episode yet. His monologue over Cordelia is just so good, you really get an idea of how empty he feels.
