"Sacrifice"

Angel: 4x20 Full Reaction

I am starting to think Connor is a Villain's henchman. He seems to follow manipulative charismatic people rather blindly, from Holtz, to a heroin junky con artist, to Jasmine as Cordy, to Jasmine full on as a people-eating world dominating telepathic wizard. Maybe it is all he has to go on. That little conversation with Angel about how Holtz use to tie him up make him escape and come back on his own -- that was maybe a clue into the deep uncaring inner world Conner has. He may be actually psycho. Conner taking soldiers on the hunt (even though they are all glamoured and basically puppets of Jasmine) is more of the bad than just being misled. I think Connor knows what he is doing. Just as Jasmine's blood and Cordelias blood breaks the spell, I suppose his blood would too. That means he isn't under a spell, it is his choice, and has been all along. It is only in the last scene that he spoke with Jasmine's voice, which means that he was not under her influence (other than convincing him to go along) until then, and even then only with his consent, because he "accepted her power" into him like she said he could now do. Connor is a psycho, warped into a willing participant in evil, the worst kind, who does it because he thinks its justified. Jasmine's world of peace and light sure ends up in a lot of fights, now Father and Son are going to War against each other.

I have so much to say about what I think about Jasmine's original nature. Will wait until next episode. But there is a lot of thematic depth!

The phrase, "you is talky meat" just pops into my head every so often since I've seen this episode.

“And how does your kind define ‘Love’?” “Same as all-bodies, same as everywheres. Love is sacrifice.” A top 5 ATS exchange for me. Having the former Watcher strategically interrogate an unknown demon, revealing demons do indeed have a sense of love and devotion however twisted, and finally bringing the one word point of this entire season to the forefront. The ending reunites everyone from Angel Inc. just before Angel has to leave them thinking that they’ll die and it’s so heartbreaking but proves the episode’s point perfectly. Two more left!

Yes, also for most people in this universe there is no such thing as a vampire with a soul, and even saying "vampire with a soul" may not mean anything for someone that has met vampires before, is not as simple as explaining "I'm a vampire with a soul". Also following your point, he knows that even with a soul he's not just automatically good, he has to make an effort to be good.

I goddamn love the demon in this episode; the effects are superb, the design is very unique for this show, and I like his weird, disjointed way of talking. He's just a good time.

I think the reason that Angel doesn't lead with the whole "I'm a good vampire with a soul" thing is that he feels it cheapens his redemption. If we're just going around saying "see I'm good now" then that gets held up in lieu of actually doing the good deeds and staying on our redemptive path. If we're to stay with the theme of the episode it's about his constant sacrifice. He's doing a noble thing but doesn't get to hold it up or take pride from it.

So close to the finale now! In regards to Angel not telling this crew of people that he has a soul, I think thats mostly showing us his mental state after fighting Connor. It's clear he's pretty torn up about being violent to his son and having his blood on his hands, hence he's not willing to say 'hey I'm a good guy/hero', he'd rather just make a quick threat and move on. Even if that just makes them more hostile to us, Connor's at the forefront of Angel's mind. But also, frankly those people really have no reason to believe him - they don't have the knowledge of the difference a soul can make that we the audience have, and there's no real way to prove it to them. It's not like vampires with souls are a common thing. If someone said to me hey this guy's a murderer but don't worry he's reformed now I would not exactly trust that lol.
