Wesley's a cretin.

Dante

The line about a play at about 23:30 is a reference to the play Oedipus Rex, and ancient Greek play with that basic premise.

Serapsi

I didn't know that! Awesome fact. Thanks!

Captain Hammer

So it seems no one has mentioned this, but in case you missed it, this episode was directed by Sean Astin....aka Samwise Gamgee of Lord of the Rings films (and also he was in Stranger Things season 2 and plenty of other stuff since the 80s).

oh interesting, i kinda wanna go back and focus more on fredโ€™s demeanor. i was so caught off guard (and so did not think the idea of cheating would never be on fredโ€™s mind) that i might have been clouded and missed something!

Cassie

Such an insane episode! The way the team found out about Cordelia and Connor was shocking! And Wesley kissing Fred... unbelievable! Genuinely why is everyone making out with each other this season? ๐Ÿซ  I also love how this episode (and show) highlights how Angelus and Angel are different individuals, coexisting in one body. I feel like we didn't get that on Buffy, they were always referring to Angelus as "Angel" whereas on AtS they are (accurately) calling him "Angelus", and talking about Angel as a different person who is no longer here. Having his soul doesn't just give him his empathy back, the soul is the real Angel, the person that was, Angelus is the demon occupying his body. That distinction is being made very clear here.

I know how tempting it is to talk about future exciting stuff, but I think we should just let Cass experience the episodes without prepping her for them.

Lime Pie

I can't wait for you're reaction next episode! Pay close attention, and before the episode ends try to guess aloud how you think the beast has been underminding them, and what the ultimate agenda/goal is. This next episode is gonna hit.

I totally understand how you feel about Wesley kissing Fred. I do think I understood how Fred felt about it enough. But It is a very confusing situation no matter what. I think everybody's feeling the heat right now, with all hell raining, beast, Angelus and personal feelings that I think have been boiling all around.

A few months ago I saw a great comment/analysis of Wes's personality change over the past season and why he's acting "like this". I can't just quote the whole thing because it goes into next season, but it pointed out that Wesley is ACTING tough ever since the gang split last season. Calling it a "performance" is too much, but Wesley is deliberately putting on a front to try and seem tougher and more 'manly'. He's changed how he talks, how he dresses, and how he treats people (Friends and enemies alike). Part of it is self-defense -- since it was the 'weak' Wesley who was hurt and abandoned so if he's 'strong' that won't happen again -- but part of it is also envy for what the MANLY MEN in his life had before Angel was the Champion with a Grand Destiny. Gunn 'got' Fred. So here we see that act continue. TV and movies have shown that women like it when Men Take Charge. Gunn being the tough guy is what got Fred in the first place. So Wesley thinks if he bulls ahead, she'll like him as well.

In a loving relationship? Don't see much love there. Gunn and Fred were always a lame couple. Team Wesley 4tw.

I love how talented David's acting is. Even just his body language walking around in the cage tells you it isn't Angel

Thatโ€ฆ.is Not a black & white issue.

I think some people in the comments should go back and watch that scene more closely before throwing around suggestions of SA .I'm not getting involved in that conversation any further than this because it's a no-win-scenario for me (ialtbaaaftca) but I think that's a wild thing to say in this very specific case and if anyone looks at that scene soberly and objectively they will agree. (aifyafaoopc) I understand it's an emotional subject.

Something I thought about while you were spiraling a bit over not knowing these characters as well as those on Buffy...do you feel it might be possible that your perception of their actions these last few episodes and the subsequent confusion might be due largely to the absolutely incomprehensible actions of Cordial which -- while I would argue there are those of us who could say we understand what happened with with Wes and Fred and Gun -- I also think we would likely all agree that none of us understood what was going through Cordelia's mind at this point in our first time watching this season. Just a thought.

nobody in this season can control their horny

I really love this episode. I find Angelus much more intimidating here than I did in Buffy season 2. With all the drama and insecurities in the team, Angelus is free to unravel everyone without ever stepping out of his cage. I got the impression that Fred wanted to kiss Wesley on some level. Like you said, there are a lot of reasons why Fred would hesitate to push Wesley off of her even if she had a desire to kiss Wesley, especially considering that Angelus will use any opportunity to stir up drama (which is why I think Fred told Gunn that nothing happened). However, the way she was acting just before Wesley kissed her felt like she was trying to restrain her affection. Still though, Wesley is very much in the wrong for making a move on Fred like that, but I'm not surprised he would because Angelus pushed all the right buttons imo.

Lime Pie

Very fun episode. Angelus getting to push Angel Investigations' buttons to generate conflict is interesting and highlights a lot of what the characters want (maybe because when this originally aired, the writers' thought they might have to get returning viewers up to speed, if they were returning to the show just to see Angelus). Also one of Angelus' manipulation tactics is to deny information and try and get the other person to get all defensive and keep the dialogue going (like he chided Wesley for trying in this episode). Angelus does it multiple times this episode usually when he does this, he then turns his back on the other person and walks away, and they keep talking and step closer to the cage.

James Smith

Wesley kissing Fred seems like SA or at least not being careful about consent. Even if Fred has desire for Wesley it doesn't imply consent. So, that being said sometimes I wonder if love triangles would be less of a problem if monogamy wasn't the default model for relationships. Monogamy has its advantages, its simpler and also focusing on one person can lead to intensified intimacy. However sometimes people have many loves that overlap in time. Its clear from the start that Fred has connection to both Wesley and Charles. Anyway โ€ฆ poly representation probably a little much to ask when this was made.

The Testimony of Mushroom

1. I love how you said you wanted to hear Angelus sing and then promptly got to. 2. "Doing your mom and wanting to kill your dad. There should be a play." This is a reference to Oedipus, which is the play that Buffy, Xander, and Willow were forced to preform for the Talent Show in season 1 of Buffy!
