Angel: 4x8 Full Reaction

Angel: 4x8 Full Reaction

Comments

I’m definitely with you on , and amused by, the reaction to Connor/Cordy.

Jared Wiltshire

The reason Connor and Cordy's relationship drives us crazy is because Cordelia knew him as a baby and was (and still is) romantically interested in his father, so not only is it a hell of a betrayal to Angel, by both Cordelia and Connor, but it's also weird and disgusting as fuck to have sex with someone you knew as a newborn just a few months prior.

An Apocalypse is an ending of everything. A personal one is when your old life is gone. Not everything you had, not everything you were, but the major parts are changed. The things you used to do the most are so over. Wesely and Lilah are over, Angel and Coredelia are over, Gunn and Wesely are over, Gunn and Fred? Over, even if its still lingering on, its dying. Cordy and Conner? Over. Probably. Wolfram & Hart? Oh yeah, over. Zombified. "The Answer is among you" -- so ominous, so mysterious. Love it. I just don't get the problem people have with Connor and Cordy getting together sexually. It seems a bit of a forced thing, plotwise, but the recoil that gen Z viewers exhibit is so extreme and I feel a bit over the top, like performative disgust, when really it doesn't warrant all that. It is a way to show some character development. For the first time Conner has some reason to want to be around, someone to be close with other than Holzt, and I am sure that was pretty weird and extreme as well, but that was all he knew. Joss doesn't let romantic relationships go smooth for very long, that's for sure. Well, maybe once. Something always tears things apart, that is part of the drama. So look forward to those plot twists and so on. The "love scene" was supposed to be poetic and defiant and to echo the other Buffyverse love scenes and to appeal to audiences, but apparently things have changed socially to the point where a certain portion of viewers want to call a riot down it gets to them so much in the wrong way. I wonder why that is, when the show is so full of really bad stuff people have to go through that that is what outrages and hits the ick button. So yeah just trust that the writers know how to bring the story around and weren't just getting pervy for the hell of it or to mess with you in a bad way.

“Now get your new boyfriend and get the hell out of here” I love Angel’s attitude in this episode! From his perspective, his best friend (and romantic interest) betrayed him in the worst way possible, and she didn’t even have the decency to tell him. He has every right to be acting this way.

Since I didn't comment on the last episode because it still angers me so much, it was gratifying to see that you're also still so disgusted by it. Passive-aggressive Angel was absolutely the best attitude he could take. It enabled him to show Cordelia (and us) his anger while still keeping his focus on getting the job done. That's also probably the best attitude for us to take: we're mad at the show, but we don't want to stop watching. I do see you as pretty Lorne-ish. You try to keep what's happening in perspective, taking it seriously without losing your sense of humor.

I didn't notice any difference in the audio, but my AC is running full-blast so it may have covered up the subtleties. Lilah's reaction when Wesley breaks off their relationship is a perfect example of "Evil Cannot Comprehend Good". She keeps trying to make it about Wesley GETTING something out of this decision. Either trying to get with Fred, or trying to get Lilah to conform to his sexual desires. And she honestly doesn't understand that he's trying to take a moral stand. Seeing the Beast just wipe out W&H apparently without even breaking a sweat is a great way of upsetting the status quo. It helps really sell "If it can do THIS, what else can it do?". So far we still don't what it actually wants, but we can tell that the scale is going to be very large if this is just the preamble.

I think you're right with Lorne for Angel. For Buffy maybe Jenny Calendar?

Jonathan Hall

I can see the Lorne thing, absolutely. Aren't we all a little Lorne, or do we just want to dress like him and have his charm? I think I see you as a mixture of Lorne and Fred, and on Buffy, I think you have a Giles Willow thing. Like 70% Giles, the rest Willow, kinda? Of everyone, though, I think you do carry a few qualities of Buffy and Angel themselves: compassion, protectiveness, courage and I can't remember if this is right or not but pretty sure you also fight demonic forces.

Apocalypse Now is a genuine classic. It's also the movie Xander tried to get everyone to watch in the Buffy episode 'Restless'

I am very excited for you to continue this season, your reactions have been *chef kiss* delightfully entertaining!

The Connor/Cordy scenes are such a drag on otherwise really good episodes; I appreciate this one for splitting them up and giving us some time with the rest of the gang working together, even if they butt heads sometimes. The Beast did speak briefly in the last episode too - he said to Angel "Do you really think she's safe with him?". Apocalypse Now is a war movie set in Vietnam, loosely based on "Heart of Darkness". The primary themes are the dehumanizing nature of war, the darkness within human nature, and the moral ambiguities inherent in violence, as well as the potential for both individual and societal descent into barbarity. The journey of the characters is all about their descent into madness and the toll the war is taking on them. It's a unique, sometimes surreal film that I've only seen a couple of times, and I think is worth everyone watching at least once, even if you don't like it. There's so much I wish I could say, but I don't want to spoil, so I'll leave it there :)

I've never seen anyone less here for it than you during the Connor/Cordelia scene
