April 2025 Movie Recap

April 2025 Movie Recap

Comments

I'm an older gentleman (mid-Gen X) who has seen several 1970s movies including horror and I never heard of "Mansion of the Doomed". Speaking about this is interesting as I know of many movies at least by name even if I never seen them and that includes my seeing such forgotten flicks like "Jekyll and Hyde Together Again", "The Dorm that Dripped Blood", and others... point is if I never even heard the name of this one, it probably wasn't interesting enough to even produce infamy. As to 2001 a Space Odyssey... you call yourself a movie watcher?! I'm joking around; I can understand like any other mature human being that styles change and no longer translate as well almost SIX decades afterwards (I mean is "intermission" even a thing anymore?). It does better with folks who are in the mood to hang out with the experience for a little while. Also, at least one reactor described the ending as better experienced in a "slightly elevated" state (as in stoned) which probably wasn't very uncommon in the 60s going into the 70s. I do second a watching of 2010: The Year We Make Contact at least on personal initiative for reasons described by another like "different tone, has answers, more compact and digestible film...". Love the recaps, thank you for providing them. Cheers.

Mansion of the Doomed sounds like a derivation of the excellent 1960 French film Eyes Without a Face, which I think actually lives up to the potential of the concept.

What reactors usually do is: 1. They watch 2001: A Space Odyssey. 2. They have appreciative comments about it. 3. They never watch the sequel (2010: The Year We Make Contact). The reason for that may be: - Their impression of the first movie is mainly influenced by the parts with the arguably boring quality. - The sequel was not made by Kubrick Not watching the sequel is a mistake, because: - It is properly based on the next novel. - It has answers. - It has a different vibe, free from patience-testing sequences. - It is an excellent movie with excellent actors like Roy Scheider and Helen Mirren.

I have not heard of ‘Mansion of the Doomed’; I have heard of all the other films. I have watched ‘Companion’ (which I enjoyed) and ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ (I agree that certain parts of the movie seem quite long and certain parts are iconic). My recommendation from what I watched in April would be ‘Tombstone’ (1993), a Western with Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer as Wyatt Earp and ‘Doc’ Holiday; and ‘The Last Duel’ (2021) a medieval Rashoman-style epic starring Jodie Comer, Matt Damon and Adam Driver. I watched ‘Shadow of the Vampire’ and ‘Before Midnight’ off of your recommendation from last month and I thought they were good. (although I like ‘Before Sunrise’ the most, then ‘Before Sunset’, then ‘Before Midnight’) Also watched ‘Troll 2’ (1990) a movie that is so bad that it’s good. Mel recommended the movie on Discord and I want to push that recommendation forward here.
