I'll always also kinda push back a bit on this idea that that Angel's feelings for Cordy are "out of nowhere." It's been set up, or at least hints having been dropped, as far back as the Pylea arc. Love it or hate, that's cool, but the writers were very clearly going for the idea of it having been repressed on both their sides so it "coming out of nowhere," save for those hints, is all coherent. And Groo was involved back then when Angel was about to admit it, also. So it's clearly been in the works, both in-universe and from a writing perspective.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Prophecies are almost always true in this franchise, but almost never in the way people predict. For example, going back to season one, there's the "Shanshu prophecy". At first translation it predicts that Angel will die, but since he's already dead then what that REALLY means is that he'll become alive again to be able to die. Which in turn they now think means that he will be transformed into a human as a reward for his role in the apocalypse. And just a few episodes ago when a prophecy said that there would be no birth, only death, so people thought it meant the baby would die in childbirth, but actually it meant Darla would kill herself to let Connor live. And that's one of the SIMPLER prophecy twists that go on. So for THIS prophecy....who knows? I have the absolute weirdest reaction to the idea of Cordelia and Angel being together: In "Buffy" and seasons 1&2 of "Angel" I don't recognize it at ALL. I mean like when people are watching it for the first time and ask me "Is there chemistry between them?" I laugh and say 'no'. I don't say "Not yet" or "you'll see" or "It SHOULDN'T be but they mess it up later". I just flat-out reject it. But in season three of this series I think it makes sense and builds logically off what came before. But when I go back I still say "nope, no connection beyond friendship" for the earlier episodes. It's such a weird split for me. Regarding what qualifies as 'perfect happiness' for Angel, I think you're 100% correct in that it's not JUST about him receiving pleasure, it's also about him forgetting his pain and guilt. The curse is specifically meant to torture him by making him feel guilt for his actions. So the curse is broken when that guilt is blocked, even for a moment. Sex is good at overwhelming other senses and taking your full focus, so it makes sense why that could be the one instant that Angel forgets about that one guy he killed in 1809.

The magic pleasure room was great, too bad we don't have that in real life lol. I just imagine Buffy couples like Xander and Anya or Willow and Tara taking advantage.. even after everything I still imagine Buffy and Angel gettin to be happy too 🥰

Morgan Williams

I totally think Fred and Gunn, and Cordy and Groo are both such adorable couples, and glad they are really happy together.

Morgan Williams

I wasn't baffled by Cordy not pickin up on Angel being into her, but a lil suprised too yea.

Morgan Williams

I wasn't for or against Angel and Cordy as a couple first time watching it, I wasn't sure where they were going with it.....

I like Cangel, but then I tend to just like all the things and ship all the couples so what do I know lol

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

The question of Angel achieving a moment of true happiness through his love for Conner came up at my old message board at the time this aired. Those of us who wondered about it were non-parents, and so corrected by the parents present. No matter how happy your child may make you, they explained, you're also always worried about them, always concerned about what might happen to them. So as long as Conner is in his life, Angel can never be completely happy. Also, "Maybe we could 'com' without 'shucking.'" 🤣🤣🤣

I think the best way of saying his prophecies work in the Buffyverse is that they are written in ways that can be misinterpreted.

I'm in the camp of people that don't like the idea of Angel and Cordelia having a romance. Cordelia was attracted to Angel when she first met him, but I became quite fond of the platonic relationship they developed. It makes sense to me that Angel would have a harder time achieving "a moment of perfect happiness" after losing his soul once because I imagine he is constantly thinking unhappy thoughts now in fear of losing it again, but I find it weird that Angel would be the one trying to initiate something with the potential to turn him evil again and Cordelia being so oblivious to Angel's romantic feelings despite her talent for picking up on stuff like that makes it even weirder imo. That's why I really like that Angel is able to manage his feelings by the end of this episode and realize that he has Connor to love.

Lime Pie

Angel being jealous is always fun, Groo being comically unaware of said jealousy is fun, and Angel doing the right thing when he and Groo are alone in the tunnels chasing that demon toward the beginning of the episode is great. Great reaction to a fun episode with a shocking ending.

James Smith

You might want to watch the next few episodes in one sitting.

Kevin Charley

tell that to Sofie reacts who started shipping them in the last episode of season 1 and saw every tender scene between them after that as romantic. 🙄🙄🙄

madfem

Thinks Gru is too short, is slightly taller than Angel. Meanwhile Spike comes up to Angels nipple lol.

dreadPirateRoberts

I doubt it's half

Kevin Charley

I think the reason you're feeling weird about Cordy/Angel is because... it really DOES come out of nowhere. There's no romantic chemistry so all their sexually charged moments feel weird and vaguely incestuous; it does seem like they just needed something to fill a few episodes and didn't put much thought into it.

Jorgalorg

this episode is a 9/10, one of these episodes that on paper should not work but that the show is really good at.

madfem

I would've loved if you'd ended this episode by immediately looking into the camera and switching it off again, just to mess with us! But seriously though, what happened with the last outro does sound spooky - it was giving me Host vibes (the short film, not Lorne lol).

Antonio

Fred and Gunn didn't want to call Wesley, the boss, because they'd have to admit that they lost the guy because they were busy making eyes at each other. Awkward on several levels 😬

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Ok, the catfishing tree demon is a little silly but I rather enjoy this episode. All of the double entendres, the out of context misdirect jokes, personally I think it's fun as hell.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

I think half of the fandom doesn’t like the idea of the Cordelia and Angel relationship and the other half love it. I’m in the half that love it and find it the most organic out of any relationship and romance in the Buffyverse considering it grew from friendship and seeing growth within each other. Which if you compare it to Angel and Buffy’s relationship, he fell in love with her before he even knew her and would stalk her when she wasn’t even of age.
