Obviously when the parents were talking about "bringing them in" etc, they meant the cops... They hired a PI that told them Fred was living in the hotel with this weird group of people who's acting super sus with their so called "props".. You were supposed to understand that if the parents look sus to us Angel investigation, the opposite is also true, because we were literally also whispering and conspiring on the side... Plus the dad literally says at some point "and to think we were about to call the cops on a bunch of superheroes" 😶

I love this episode, great misdirection that introduced Fred’s parents as the really are by the end of the episode. I always interpreted Cordie’s attacking Fred as a defense mechanism, attacking what just rejected you, not the way she actually feels

What impressed me most was Amy Acker's range as an actress. She is all over the emotional map, and no matter how fast she switches it up, she takes the audience with her and we feel it, every second. The physicality of everyone in Angel in their acting is fantastic, even Wesely who has that "hesitation" thing he does which shows us when he is unsure of himself, and the steely determination when he is. Lorne was a little bit surly and it was a bit of a turn to see Angle grill him , give him a little of the hard Angel PI persona, but it was fun and I think fun for Lorne too, because he basically didn't resist all that much. That line of "You haven't run far enough" he gave to Fred, that one seems kind of deep, like he sees something she should avoid but knows she won't. Maybe that's just Joss planting a seed for later plot developments. That line about the "Aliens" movie and how her dad probably fell asleep on it -- Joss Whedon wrote "Alien Resurrection" in 1997 and basically it tanked and killed the Alien movie franchise until 2012.

The misdirect on the parents made perfect sense. If you're daughter has been mysteriously missing for five years and suddenly reappeared with no explanation, it's no wonder they're planning to call the cops if they suspect something hinky is going on. I don't have any evidence to support it, but I think this episode was written as a specific rebuttal to people in the fandom who complained about Fred being included in season three. Without a clearly defined role or 'benefit' I can easily picture people calling her a wasted character and criticizing the show for "forcing" her into the group. This was a great way to show that she is PART of the team, not somebody being forced onto the team. I think you misread Cordelia a bit. She adores Fred, and was playing up "I'm glad the crazy girl is gone" to cover her hurt that Fred was leaving. That's why after she said that, when somebody else said that Fred would visit them Cordelia immediately smiled and asked if they really thought Fred would come back. There's a subtle dig at "Alien: Resurrection" here, when Fred's mom said that her dad fell asleep watching it. Joss Whedon wrote the script, but was publicly critical about his disappointment in how they adapted it.

I love Fred so much, and this episode is great at solidifying her place in the crew and allowing her to take the first step towards healing from her trauma. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Burkle, are a delight - and a refreshing change from the kind of parents we're used to in this universe; we have Xander's tumultuous family life, Willow's distant and aloof mother, Wesley, Tara and Angel's abusive fathers, Cordelia's white-collar criminal parents and Buffy's deadbeat dad. What a breath of fresh air to have a couple who just love their daughter and want what's best for her. The design and practicality of the bug demons is awesome; it's a bit let down by the slow-mo camera effect, but it's actually a really impressive costume/puppet. At this point in the show, this cast is such a tight-knit found family that I just love to watch, while on Buffy the Scoobies just seem to drift further and further apart. I think my favourite scene of this episode is Fred and Angel's conversation where she talked about just making herself a new cave after Pylea, but I also really like her breakdown in front of her parents and the lovely, wholesome ending. Amy Acker is a phenomenal actress with a great range, and I can't wait for you to see what else she has in store 💜

A fun episode. I really like Cordy and Wesley hamming up the Buffy/Angel romance recap and Lorne getting to be sassy about how Angel Investigations treats him. Also I like to think that the giant bug monsters are a nice throwback to Buffy S1 which had the She-Mantis. A cheer for Cass in 2025, the year of the Buffyverse.

This was a really beautifully written episode. I didn't expect to shed so many tears rewatching this but the scenes with Fred at the bus stop, Angel & Fred's convo in her room and the final shot all got me. That scene with her and Angel in her room was so well written and acted, I know a lot of people prefer Buffy as a show but Angel will always be my favourite when it comes to characters and character growth. Also, I love that you got scared when they showed the scene with Fred and her parents in the cab haha.
