Buffy the Vampire Slayer: 6x1 Full Reaction

"Bargaining, Part 1"

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: 6x1 Full Reaction

Comments

People probably already told you, but the slayer line goes one way, one slayer dies, the next takes her place. Kendra came because Buffy died, and Faith came because Kendra died. The line can't go back, a technicality kept Buffy alive but her death has nothing to do with the slayer line anymore.

Staineless

I think the writers should have committed to Buffy being dead and just had Sarah play Buffybot for the rest of the series.

contextual_sense

I think that the only way for a new slayer to be activated is if Faith dies; I don't think Buffy is part of the line anymore because she already technically died.

Mitchell

I just started watching this and got a full minute of "previously on" before getting to the starting point of the remaster. So no sync right from the beginning... I know why I really don't like the remastered version.

Schrompf

This episode was so hard for me to sync. I had no idea, but apparently this episode of the HD remasters has TONS of scenes cut! The version I have has like... at least half a dozen scenes that your version doesn't. Made it impossible to stay synced. Ugh, I hope this doesn't keep happening all season.

Mornir

“this feels DARK” ah yes the motto for the season. please take care Cass 💜 this season is not only dark but highly controversial. it can be rough in many different ways.

I am very pro-Spike, but I also believe that a soulless vampire can’t feel true human emotions. However, they can certainly emulate them. So Spike’s obsession can be thought of as love. He can think his way into acting correctly. He thinks he loves Buffy, he promised Buffy before she died that he would protect Dawn but he failed, so he thinks he should feel guilty and uphold that promise now. It does speak volumes to his character that he chooses to act in this way because IT IS a choice that he has to make every single time. He may not feel as a soulless vampire, but he can believe in a feeling.

Kathryn Kerr

I definitely think Angel is oversimplifying matters when he says that. The English language can be very poor when it comes to discussing nuanced emotions. In ancient Greece, there were several words for different types of love. What concerns me here is the ancient Greek definition of 'Eros' and 'Agape'. 'Eros' is love driven by passionate lust and a desire for pleasure. Whereas 'Agape' is the highest form of love, and is completely selfless and unconditional. I think souless vampires experience an 'Eros' type of love. It's inherently selfish, but it's a form of love none the less. Whereas ensouled beings are capable of truly selfless 'agape' love. They can sacrifice things for others and act beyond their own desires for the happiness of another (without any underlying selfish motivations). I speculate that this is kind of what Angel means when he says that vampires aren't capable of love. He doesn't see 'Eros' as a true equal to 'Agape' and he's in the unique position to be able to compare the two. He felt Eros for Darla, and agape for Buffy.

Bigtime vibrating with excitement; I largely agree with the Spike discussion and the concerns about unintended consequences in magic... and this spell is bloody serious stuff for an overconfident, desperate practitioner... Staying tuned.

Michael Labs

It was revealed in Buffy season 1 that Buffy's worst fear is being buried alive, so that's a very grim place to wake up for her.

Raymond Simon

Agree with your sentiments about Spike and love. It's complicated, but I think what makes Spike have more of an ability for love is his personality as a human which stayed with him after he turned into a vampire. His character as a human was different from Angel's character as a human. So I think his enormous romantic and soft nature never fully went away. Can't wait to see your reaction in the next episode!!

MG

I think a big reason that people think soulless vampires can't love is because Angel has made that claim. But there are a lot of examples in the show that demonstrate this is not true. So, personally, I think that there is something more wrong with Angel, and that he's an unreliable source. We know he's an atypical vampire in other ways already.

For the spell Willow used, there's a small thing in the setup which I doubt was intentional, but could be indicative of how far off the deep end she's going with this: The "spell" she was saying as she sacrificed the deer uses Hebrew. It's the only spell in the series to use Hebrew as opposed to Latin (most spells) or some other language. However, it doesn't match the spell that she later uses during the resurrection ritual itself. In the Hebrew she prays to "the lord, our god" (i.e. just-plain-"god") but in the resurrection spell she prays to Osiris. These are two very distinct beings (In both real life religion and mythology, and also in the fantasy world of this series). Now I think the writers probably just grabbed whatever words they could find easily in Hebrew and did copy/paste (They frequently get all of the foreign languages wrong), but if you try to give it meeting you could see it as Willow trying to mash together multiple different religions/magic styles to get where she wants to go. In pretty much EVERY fantasy series that's a major no-no and the kind of thing that brings down divine wrath or major side effects. This could be Willow breaking one of the fundamental laws of magic. And that could say a lot about her state of mind.

For everybody running into issues with different versions of the episode (Hulu vs. DVD), the streaming service Tubi carries the full series that matches Cass's versions. Tubi is free and does not require an account, so you can use it for this episode by itself without worrying about the rest of the show. Tubi does have ad breaks, but I only had a total of three commercials throughout the whole episode and I just paused Cass's video while the ad played and then resumed. Nice and easy without needing to manually re-sync the DVD. https://tubitv.com/tv-shows/200123795/s06-e01-bargaining-pt-1 Cass, not a requirement, but if you can I recommend watching the full version of the episode just for your own sake. Nothing plot critical or story changing, but it's got a few funny scenes and more character interaction.

At last!!!

Anthony Stewart Head isn’t a cast member that’s why he’s listed as special guest star, after season 5 ended his contract was up he wanted to go back to England to be with his wife and daughters , filming Buffy he had to commute back and forth from LA to England and not see his family for months. Joss was going to produce a spin-off called RIPPER that would have Giles in England but plans with Mutant Enemy and BBC fell apart

Michael Matthews

To prevent it poisoning expectations, I have it ranked 1st best season.

The Fury is a 1978 Brian DePalma film about people with parapsychologic powers. The "spooky carnival death" Xander cites involves exploding heads. It's one of the most obscure references the show makes. Xander and I are the only people I know who've ever seen it. 😎

DanielOrme

Terrific insights, especially on how the presence of the Buffybot, though necessary, is actually making the grieving process worse (Dawn curling up to it in bed like a lonely child with a doll is one of the most heartbreaking things imaginable 😢).

DanielOrme

Omg, it’s finally happening. My favorite season! I'm so ready for this!!

Simone

You'd only get a new slayer if Faith dies, she carries the original slayer line now after Buffy's first death in S1 and Kendra's in S2

Cambo

Many of these are not backfires but side effects that are noted on the package in fine print (if symptoms persist consult your oracle). Willow's fire on the beach did not cause the storm, its a symptom of Dracula coming to town. Not all magic backfires.

The Testimony of Mushroom

Oh No! Magic has unintended consequences. Spells backfire, they go haywire, they create chaos in the lives of those who use them. Amy's Valentines Day spell made Xander a love magnet that almost killed Cordy and Xander. Amy is still a rat, btw. Willow has already created havoc with spells before -- Giles went blind, Buffy and Spike fell in love, (only things she did not want to happen happened.) Later she messed up a spell and unleashed Vamp Willow, who sired Sandy, who seduced Riley into letting her bite him, and it ended up breaking up Riley and Buffy. Spike made Willow create an "Anti-love" spell, but didn't complete it. Romantic troubles have never stopped with either of them since. Faith used a magic amulet to switch bodies with Buffy, and ended up emotionally destroyed, practically insane, suicidal even. Her calling on Satanic forces to curse Veruca and Oz to never have peace, and then chickening out on it may have cursed her as well. Hell doesn't just get half summoned and forget it -- Veruca died, and Oz left forever, sending her into a deep grief and depression. The Gentlemen cast a spell over Sunnydale, to steal hearts from silent victims. Their heads exploded. The spell they used to defeat Adam backfired in the First Slayer coming to kill them in their dreams. Willow started a fire on the beach with a spell, and then a big storm hit out of nowhere. Also Dracula showed up. A demon made a spell to split Buffy in two, missed and hit Xander, and ended up dying. Of course The monks did a spell and made Dawn, put memories in everyone's heads, and Joyce gets a brain tumor and dies. So did Buffy. Now ... this is soooo big.

frothing at the mouth for part 2. awesome reaction, i agree w all of your end notes!

kachow6969

Fun reaction! Season 6 begins! Also, this is one of the last times in a tv show set in 'the present' when characters will show up and see a character off right at the airport gate. Just a result of this episode being written pre 9/11 and released after.

James Smith

Yeah, this is hard to keep up with when it seems like her copy is just randomly jumping ahead. Thanks for the explanation.

jibbers42

I'm only 2 minutes in but isn't Faith the active Slayer? So no new slayer would be called when Buffy dies.

Mementovitae

Wished we had heard more of your thoughts on season 5 as a whole. Maybe you didn't want to push back the season 6 premiere even more... I hope you will do a wrap up video for season 6. Pretty much every season of Buffy deserves it.

madfem

HERE WE GO! For Region 1 DVD viewers-Just a heads up for those watching Buffy 6x1 on Region 1 DVD vs Cassie's reaction from Hulu. Hulu has a 45 second 'previously on' that the DVD doesnt have, and the DVD has almost five extra minutes of content (some minor cuts, some short scenes that were cut from the Hulu edit)

James Smith

Season 6 is fantastic! I'm so excited you're finally getting here

Land Howard Johnston

Season 6 is controversial, dark and a total change in how the show presents itself imo. I do have it in ranked 4th best season

Eric J Quintern

AHHH I’M SO READY!!!
