Angel: 2x17 Full Reaction

They did very much send a vampire who is floundering and emotionally vulnerable and struggling with a lack of purpose in her life straight into the middle of a vampire cult/pyramid scheme, little wonder it worked out that way 😭😂

Considering there have been times when Buffy and the Scoobies have planned to retreat from some small gatherings of vampires (like Spike, Dru and their group trapped in a basement in S2E7), and the fact that Angel Investigations planned to attack a gathering of 100 vampires, might be explained by vampires who go to the Hellmouth being more dedicated to "Evil" and vampires elsewhere being more lowercase 'e' evil and therefore many of them likely to be cowardly. Overall a nice, fun, palate cleanser episode, after the heaviness of the last few Buffy episodes.

James Smith

That comment during the reaction made me feel so old :D . Lady Di died 27 years ago, so that song isn't the cultural staple that it was when the show aired anymore :)

"You're a sheep Harmony!" - Cordelia in Buffy season 2 Harmony just jumps from whatever thing will accept her to the next one... but I 100% believe she's being honest when she thinks she's found a new place. Plus... she's not really a planner, or tactician. You're pretty safe betting against her successfully plotting a long term scheme to betray a group of vampire killers.

That pain has to do with your body growing new electrical pathways that once would have gone through the tooth and the bone socket, but now have to forge a new path. It is completely normal, but the swelling can "reactivate" the nerve pathways making that part of your brain think "something is wrong down there" and make it produce pain to alert your to do something. That's just a theory. Also sometimes pain in the TMJ area (upper jawbone hinge) translates into the teeth -- something called "referred pain". As a woman I sure you have felt back pain when you know that its not your back that is the cause, same thing it shows up slightly off. Anyway, a "cool trick" is to massage the gums with your finger on the opposite side of your mouth, and it "releases" the pain on the other side. The whole nervous system is mirrored left to right like that, so that one side sympathizes with the other. Rubbing gently on the other side helps when its too sore to rub on directly, and sometimes you get an "electric jolt" go through the area and the pain just is gone. Finally, stick half an aspirin up in the gum above the painful area and let it dissolve. That wipes out the pain and the swelling. Don't sleep overnight with it in there, tho, or it will damage the skin temporarily, leaving it feeling rough. Not my favorite episode, but I have to admit the acting was good all around. It would have to be to pull off the comedy, the timing and the facial expressions and tonalities of delivery had to be spot on, and they were. The episode was shot really well, too, with the locations and angles very cinematic, with close close ups, and wide wide shots, crane shots, overheads, etc. Too bad Wolfram & Hart doesn't hire vampires, she might make a good typist. She would be ideal for a supernatural version of "The Office". Has that been done?

It’s subtle but Wesley aims his crossbow at Angel early on when he says to give Harmony a chance showing he still doesn’t trust him fully. By the end the trust Angel puts in Wesley to make the decision to “k*ll them all” w both of them knowing that regular vamps at cowards like you said is the moment the Wes and Angel bff status noticeably comes back. Love the Angel writers sometimes.

I think tandoori is a cooking method associated with Indian food which is a cuisine that I never thought I'd enjoy until I tried it a few years ago (found a liking for korma type dishes don't mind palak-type dishes either). As to the "phantom tooth" pain, I can't remember when the extraction occurred for you Cass however, I had the occasional twinge for awhile. Could be "ghost pains" or the formerly crowded teeth could be respacing a little bit (just a thought).

Michael Labs

You can get Tandoori vegetarian dishes. They have all the flavour.

Harmony is the one vampire character who makes me wonder about that rule. We've been told and shown how vampires retain certain traits of the humans they replace, but Vampire Harmony seems to be exactly the same as Human Harmony. Which seems to be the comic point: a ditzy shallow high school mean girl is the ideal personality for a vampire.

DanielOrme

Harmony was definitely being honest in those conversations with Angel and Cordy. When she says to Cordy that she hasnt been happy since high school or "business? nooo, I'm all about play, play, play" ofc you get that she represents the typical "I'm stuck in high-school" person, but that's also because that's what vampires are supposed to represent in the Buffyverse, that is, someone who is stuck in a childish state, unable to grow and evolve for the better. They're pure "id" monsters, they can't change without a soul, a conscience (although as you said, Spike definitely appears to be challenging this notion atm...) Harmony is the only vampire we've seen in her "early vampire years" and I think its brilliant that they took this archetype of character to illustrate the tragedy of the vampire curse inhibiting one's growth because it works so well with her pre established character.

madfem

I think Harmony really thought she was joining the good side for just that short time. Then she sat in on the cult seminar and decided to betray them.

Tandoori chicken is one of the most popular Indian food in the world. I've never even had it cuz I don't eat meat but its like everywhere

madfem

Yeah no Charmed is nothing like Angel except for the supernatural element. I'm concerned by that comment lol

madfem

Amber dated the guy who played Warren (the guy who made the robot woman) for a while.

Dusty Hill

I'm sure you've heard the song Candle in the Wind by Elton John. When Princess Di died, he did a version for her funeral.

This episode is always a fan favorite. Even those who dislike Harmony like it, because Gunn and Wesley verbalize a lot of complaints that they have for the way some vampires are left to "run wild" on both shows. I just think it's fun, and Mercedes McNab has great chemistry with just about everybody. She's one of the actresses I wish I could have just seen more of in general. Harmony wasn't running a scam the whole time, she was honest when speaking with Cordelia. It's just that she switched sides as soon as she heard the "message" of the cult. 20 minutes in Doug's seminar and she was a devoted follower. I've always stuck to the message that Giles gave Xander back in the Buffy premier when talking about their friend Jesse that had been turned into a vampire: "You listen to me. Jesse is dead. You have to remember that. When you see him, you're not looking at your friend. You're looking at the thing that killed him." Cordelia's friend Harmony died in the episode "Graduation Day, Part II" in Buffy season three. No matter how similar the vampire may be in general personality, they're not the same person. That doesn't mean I don't understand Cordelia's decision to spare her at the end. It's hard to argue with your eyes and your ears all telling you it's the same person. Those emotions don't go away no matter what intellectual knowledge you have. But that doesn't make the knowledge wrong. Even Angel is not the same person as Liam, the human he was before Darla sired him.

Originally I disliked Cordy’s reaction to Harmony “being a lesbian” to Willow on the phone. But because it was played for comic relief you don’t realize how creepy it must be for your friend to come into your bedroom whilst you’re asleep to tell you they have urges and can’t control themselves around you lol

Ahmad

Another episode where you were really in the shoes of a character; you and Cordelia were mirrored in your responses to Harmony's inevitable betrayal. Side note, really liked Doug Sanders and thought he was fun, would have liked to see him as a recurring villain. I also agree that Harmony wasn't hoodwinking anyone (she's not a very long-term planner), I think she's just a lovable ditz who's fully onboard with whatever's making her feel good at the time. She's a sheep, like Cordelia said waaaay back in Buffy Season 3.

YES! Thank you!!! Founded in 1998 but not reallllly under scrutiny until 2003 based on what I can find so I’m not sure if it’s an intentional reference.

Cassie

The cult with the different colored sashes you're thinking of was called NXIVM, lead by absolute creep Keith Reniere.

As mentioned Alexis and Alyson got married while this show was filming. They are still married to this day. Last year there were great pictures of them at J. August Richards (Charles Gunn)'s wedding that was apparently tropically themed judging by Alexis's shirt.

Honestly, the MLM/pyramid scheme satire in this episode is so good 😂. Harmony is a favourite character of mine (despite her souless evilness)! I really enjoy how Harmony contrasts with Cordelia in this episode. It does a good job of highlighting just how much Cordelia's grown when you see her interacting with her vapid vampire friend.

Rebecca

I'm so glad you enjoyed this episode! OMG, it's my time to shine. I got you on the dating stuff 😂. Useless Backstage Buffyverse Knowledge Assemble. Charisma (Cordelia) and Alyson (Willow) both had a crush on Alexis (Wesley) when he first showed up in Buffy. Alexis and Alyson eventually got married though, and they're still together! Amber (Tara) dated one of the Buffy guest stars for a bit. Harmony and Spike went on a date or two, but apparently there was a large age gap so that went no further. The main dating rumours were around SMG (Buffy) and David (Angel). There's quite a few old photos of them smooching off set floating around the internet. They were very close on set and described one another as 'their person'. They never came out and confirmed they dated though. At the very least they were very close friends and still are! Allegedly, David got into a physical fight with Nicholas Brendon (Xander) because Nicholas said something rude about SMG. I'm sure more hooking up happened, but it was easier to keep things under wraps back then.

Advice for today, avoid self-growth inhibitors and tune out mental roadblocks

Matthew

this camera doesn’t let as much light in on its standard settings - i had to mess with exposure & iso and can’t decide if i like how it turned out lol

Cassie

Is the colour balance different with the new camera? You are looking good, maybe there is a little more saturation?
