2024 June Movie Recap

2024 June Movie Recap

The best romantic comedies of the 30's and 40's are wonderful. I'd especially recommend the ones that teamed Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn. The Philadelphia Story is classic (you'll see how countless movies have ripped it off ... er ... taken inspiration from it). Bringing Up Baby is more full-on screwball comedy (also much, um, borrowed from). And then there is Holiday, which I recommend to everyone. It may be my Favorite Movie Ever.

I like that you can recognize film noir without ever having actually seen any noir movies (Though you have seen the first season of Angel, which has a lot of noir elements and feel). It shows how much the form, the tropes, etc. have spread into pop culture over the years. And you're right about Brick, it does go to the edge of parody without quite crossing over, translating all the noir tropes into high school life. My favorite is how in classic noir the private eye has a wary but respectful relationship with one hard-nosed but fair police lieutenant. In Brick, it's the school's tough vice principal, played by the great Richard Roundtree. (Getting back to Angel, that's pretty much the relationship between Angel and Kate.)

One of my fav 1940s comedies is Arsenic and Old Lace. Highly recommend.

Not at the end yet but GIRL, Psycho is also in my top 5 horror movies ever - absolutely classic. Def gonna check out Shop Around the Corner! I really enjoyed Am I Ok? (Big Dakota fan) and was also SO HAPPY that they didn’t do the ‘in love with her best friend’ thing. So refreshing and I loved what the film was saying about female friendship as we still don’t see enough films about it. Really wanna check out Late Night with the Devil!

I absolutely love "You've Got Mail"!

For anyone who is interested in noir, animation and movies that can balanced goofy and serious plot elements, I would recommend 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' (1988).

James Smith

I love the oc. I would highly recommend finishing it. I love season one and 4. Also Jenifer’s body slays (no pun intended)

Notes regarding Shop Around The Corner -- You should check out the modern remake "You've Got Mail" with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan -- If you like this and want to try another 40s rom com I would suggest "The Philadelphia Story" -- Another recommendation would be "Down With Love" a modern take on one of those classic movies in similar vein starring Rene Zellwegger and Ewan McGregor -- Also, an interesting old hollywood tangent is to lookup the real life love triangle between Margaret Sullivan, Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda
