*Renner was nominated twice for an Oscar (The Hurt Locker/Best actor, The Town/Best supporting Actor) but didn't win. I love seeing those "Before they were famous" episodes. It's always a nice surprise.

Silvio Nolle

The concept of turning someone into a vampire to save them is antithetical to the buffyverse. A vampire is a demon animating a dead body. And haying an ensouled vampire is supposed to be an extremely rare if not unique occurrence and meant as a punishment . Pen wasn’t Angelus “friend” he was his pupil. And we are finding out new things about Angel, as for example as established on this episode, at one time in the past he used to mark his victims the same way he taught Pen to do.

I tried the watch-along and while it’s tedious i think i’ll get used to it!

vee xo!

And since the show, especially in this first season, takes a lot of its tone and structure from classic noir fiction, using some 1940's slang fits nicely.

DanielOrme

So there's a term in noir fiction where people say, "give me the skinny" that essentially means the same as "give me the down-low". So essentially it's a play on that phrase by saying they're going to be "trading skinnys". Classic Whedon style dialogue.

George Daugherty

On Buffy and Angel , vampires sire some to increase their ranks like the Master or to take a mate like with Darla ,with Angel it’s to make a protege or apprentice ,as for sire connections you remember how loyal Drusilla was to Angelus over Spike who she attacked when he was beating up Angel

Michael Matthews

I'm sorry, I'll see you on Youtube. Hopefully you'll sort this issue out one day, I'll come back running <3

SkySpirit

It means they made it public in the past that the bodies were drained of blood. That would earn a "vampire killer" tag. They didn't make it public with the current murders, as Angel pointed out.

Gung Ho

Other reactors blur the episode, and still playing the audio of the show. I have seen Buffy where I only need the audio. I don't have the capabilities to watch the episode and reaction at the same time.

Pumpkin 3.14

Watched this while synching with my copy from amazon prime. I it synched perfectly with your Hulu version for whatever it is worth.

Dave Hampton

the way i frame it is just for the patreon edit:) i screen record the entire screen

Cassie

He honestly would have been a cool villain to keep around for a while. Maybe make him a recurring villain or something.

Steve Quast

I can't see the title Vampire Killer without thinking of Castlevania.

Steve Quast

I'm always glad to find a reactor who is interested in and likes Kate. I remember there were Angel fans who didn't care for her, but I always thought she was a terrific and intriguing character.

DanielOrme

The phrase "what's the skinny" or "get the skinny" in the sense of asking for or getting information is one of those bits of slang that come into and out of vogue. According to The Magic Google Machine 😁 it first appeared in the 1930's, but didn't become popular slang until the 40's. [The first use of the word "skinny" with the meaning of something or someone being thin was by W. Shakespeare in "Macbeth."]

Of course Jeremy Renner went on to become a huge Movie star, won the Oscar for "The Hurt Locker", and was part of the Avengers movies, and of course several Mission Impossible films. He also played serial killer Jefrrey Dahmer in a tv series a few years ago. So this is one of those "Before they were famous" episodes.

I plan on sticking around to try the watch along style. I did try it with the first six Buffy episodes and only had minor issues with my DVD and your Hulu video not being perfectly in sync. Regarding the episode. I really like this one. The bad guy's name is Penn and he is played by Jeremy Renner, who now is better known for portraying Hawkeye in the MCU. I think the reason that Alexis Denisof's name didn't appear in last episodes opening credits was to try and have an element of mystery, but now he is the third character in the title credits.

James Smith

Yeah I was going to say this, it’s just the press doing their thing and giving serial killers names. In that case they must have publicised the puncture wounds and blood loss leading to a more correct than they could have ever imagined nick name.

JenJen on Wheels

Any sort of visual aid to help match up our video with yours is best. I've followed "watch along" formats before with differences in speeds, encoding and frame rates are easy to cause problems. But all I have to do is hit pause or readjust to synch it back up.

Gung Ho

pretty sure its a 1920's slang expression...or sometime way back there. It was pretty commonly used in old nior, detective movies. Although it's usually used in the singular. The idea is that Angelus did (the cross on the cheek) and he taught it to Penn who was shown to be his "pupil". As far as us having never seen Angelus do the cross thing in any flashbacks, that could be attributed to it maybe being a thing he'd just adopted just before he was "re-souled" or whatever. Becuase he was supposed to meet Penn in Italy but didn't because of the curse. The only reason I think we wouldn't see someone being turned to save them from dying is because, in this universe, being made into a vampire is the same as dying in that the person dies and a demon sets up residency in their body. P.S. LOVE Kate.

Brandon Scott

Unfortunately I don’t have Hulu either and only own Buffy on DVD’s, which sucks because I have been enjoying these full Angel watch-alongs.

mojo shivers

The Gallagher joke is lost on young folks. I loved Gallagher as a kid... especially his standup making fun of the English language.

aeronitz

The Hulu version has episodes with edits that cut dialogue in some scenes. Other content creators will add a few seconds of watch along every 10 minutes or so to help in resyncing. Also on this episode the way you have it framed cuts off all but the top of the subtitles so you cannot read them.

Stephen Knueppel

This is a top 5 episode in season 1 of Angel for me. I think Pen might've actually been a good villain for a 2 parter or little mini arc but we aren't there in the show yet I guess. Cordelia is already such a better character than she was in Buffy. Angel, too, and Wesley - well, he's on his way. Fun reaction Cass.

roomtone

I second the idea of pausing for the act breaks. My current Hulu subscription is not ad-free, so pausing at those points would be very helpful to keep in sync.

Brandon VandeBrake

I think the "Vampire Killer" headline was just a nickname for the killer like "Pope Killer" in the modern timeline

Neill Shaughness

I do understand why you are doing this but I'm afraid I'll not be able to go with you. I don't have my own copy + I only have my phone so I'm unable to do a watchalong. I just wish it wasn't season 5 as it's my favourite 😪

CeNedra

cass, bless you, obviously you have a good financial incentive to be really involved in making sure the changes work but you really are going above and beyond. two immediate thoughts that might help the sync - once the episode is going, length shouldn't really change unless someone somehow has a slightly slowed down copy, so a signal that the Opening Credits are beginning might be an 'easy' extra marker. The other thought is that because this is formerly broadcast TV, there are pretty distinct and obvious commercial breaks - it might be too involved for some, but honestly, i wouldn't hate it if you used these as pause breaks for your trademark "i gotta talk about this" bits.
