2022-05-21 09:33:02 +0000 UTC48:58 - I think you might be thinking of the three volunteers who had to open the valves to drain the water beneath the reactor core; I know you've seen it, so I can say that event happens towards the end of Episode 2. What's happening here is that Akimov and Toptunov were dismissed by Dyatlov after the accident in favour of bringing in the day shift, but they both took it upon themselves to stay and try to manually open the feedwater valves which once led to the cooling pipes around the core. Their actions were noble but ultimately futile - because the cooling pipes were shattered in the explosion, and all they were doing was dumping more water into the corridors beneath the core. They were in that area for well over an hour, and the level of radiation they were exposed to over that length of time sealed their fate.

2022-05-04 11:15:50 +0000 UTCVictoria - for heavens' sake, please feel free to "geek out" as much as you wish while reacting to and discussing this series - I guarantee you'll probably know things that aren't brought up, and even if they are, we'll be more than happy to listen. For what it's worth, a significant chunk of this dramatisation took inspiration from a BBC docudrama on the subject (which is definitely worth watching sometime) - and much of that was in turn based on a book called "Chernobyl Notebook" by Grigory Medvedev.

2022-05-04 01:33:04 +0000 UTCI enjoy seeing you geek out over this event and wanting to share what you learned. While some things are dramatized in this show, I think people gave you the wrong impression about how much it's dramatized. I'd say it's more accurate than the average dramatized program.

2022-05-03 01:21:43 +0000 UTCFeel free to teach us all you know. I have tried to learn a bit about the event since watching the show just to see how accurate it was. I think it turned out to be more accurate than plenty of other dramatized programs, while still being an incredible watch. It will be a difficult viewing at times but I am hyped for the rest of your reaction.

2022-05-02 07:07:31 +0000 UTCI very much appreciate all your comments. I have watched the series before and had the blessed ignorance of how bad things can be. You have the knowledge and education to know the truth going in. I am sure you will still be captivated by the show. Keep up the good work and share your knowledge with us.

2022-05-02 00:53:28 +0000 UTCI like that you're passionate and nerding out, but my goodness take a breath! You might miss good stuff. Also those weren't the guys that went in to shut off the valves. That happens later

2022-05-01 23:47:36 +0000 UTCThe valves incident is a few days later, VK. But you're right there are three of them. The show does cover them.

2022-05-01 20:53:32 +0000 UTCIn real life, he lived with his wife so I'm sure she would have taken care of a cat if they had one. But he did kill himself two years later.

2022-05-01 20:12:51 +0000 UTCAll throughout this series, as a physicist, whenever the rad counter starts screaming, I want to as well. So much of this series makes my skin absolutely crawl because I too *know*.

2022-05-01 18:31:32 +0000 UTCSad bit of detail, Legasov left behind extra bowls of food for his cat because he figured it would be a while before someone found his body.
