I think its interesting Sam how you said Col Nicholson needs to be more realistic about where he is because that's exactly what this movie explores. Colonel Nicholson, played by Alec Guinness, embodies idealism, focusing on the principles of honor, discipline, and duty. His commitment to building the bridge, despite being a prisoner of war, reflects his belief in upholding these ideals, even under extreme circumstances.
On the other hand, the character of Shears, played by William Holden, represents realism. He is more pragmatic and concerned with survival and practical outcomes rather than adhering to lofty principles. The film illustrates the tension between these conflicting viewpoints and how they influence the characters' actions and decisions.
The bridge itself becomes a symbol of this struggle, as it represents both the idealism of Nicholson's efforts and the realistic need to destroy it to achieve the mission of the Allied forces.

What a masterpiece of film-making! Also, its based upon a true story-- the Japanese Army forced British POWs to work on their Burma railroad and thousands of them died.

A great theme tune as well. I used to listen to my dad's classic war film theme tunes vinyl album a lot, also good is 'Guns of Navarone.
How young does Obi Wan look?

Great call! I love all his Ealing comedies, but I think you're right, Coronets is the best one.

I almost put Doctor Zhivago as my choice in the monthly movie selection. It completes the three great David Lean movies with Lawrence.

So, do you think you would have enjoyed the movie more or less if you'd realized that Alec Guinness was Obi-Wan Kenobi?

There are parts of this film that play like a dark comedy. Perhaps that's the point? Great film. Thanks for sharing.

Another fine reaction to a classic. It’s a great story, even iconic and legendary, though it was radically changed from the actual history. Same director as ‘Lawrence of Arabia’, and the epic scale reflects that to a degree.

Even though they are before my time, I have a thing for these old war movies. I'm so glad you are doing this one!
Please put "The Guns of Navarone" (1961) on your list!

The start of this movie is a class in how to open a film. No screen crawl, no exposition. Just a shot of the jungle, then railroad tracks, then grave markers next to the tracks. We know the setting, that is has something to do with a railroad, and that people are dying building the railroad - all in less than a minute of screen time
