2023-11-24 21:07:17 +0000 UTCI saw this movie when it came out and it was amazing and Al Pacino won the Oscar. But is was such a competitive year with Denzel Washington's Malcolm X performance. I was torn at the time but Al Pacino definitely deserved it. But on that night what I found most disturbing is that it was Al Pacino's first and only Oscar. How in the fu*k does that happen. My first Al Pacino movie was Serpico and he should have won the Oscar that year and he should have won for Dog Day Afternoon and he should have won in For Justice for All. He's in my top 5 greatest actor's ever, and this performance was his first and only Oscar. Crazy!

2023-11-23 08:22:10 +0000 UTCThe director's follow up Meet Joe Black 1998 is also great. 3 hour runtime, very very slow and yet riveting and you don't notice the time. The stacked cast doesn't hurt either. How such a great director then turned around and made Gigli, a movie regarded as not just bad but one of the worst movies ever made, is beyond me.

2023-11-21 17:16:54 +0000 UTCInteresting that you thought Christopher Walken could have played this role. I was thinking that he already did in The Deer Hunter. It was the same character put into different circumstances that lead to a different ending. When Frank talks about giving up on having that enduring relationship with a woman, I thought that was because he had a career in the military that lasted at least 20 years where he was continuously moving and chose not to have a family in order to make it easier on his career. He was conditioned to end any romantic relationship for the next move.

It was ahead of its time because of the spike in military suicides that would follow 30 years after it was released. Most people don't want to hear about the problems that military families endure, but that makes this film more important over time. Malcolm X was an outstanding, important, performance by Denzel Washington, but was a film waiting to be made.

Al Pacino is just...AWESOME!! His acting demands artistic reverence. Unlike any other actor his body language speaks more dialogues than his speech. Al Pacino is one actor whose acting as a villain inspires us. Who else can portray a negative character and yet influence us in a way like Al Pacino?

2023-11-20 22:23:24 +0000 UTCLoved your reaction, guys! there is so much I could say, you caught the father-son nature of Frank and Charlie, the fact that Frank just needed a reason to live again, and Charlie's bravery--he has so much courage to do the right thing, whether its not snitching or trying to stop somebody from killing themself! Every year my wife and I rewatch "the speech" -- its just perfect in so many ways.

He rightfully won the Oscar for this, his first and only one, believe it or not, after having been robbed so many times. That speech at the end is legendary. If you want another movie with an iconic Pacino speech, watch Any Given Sunday where he plays a football coach. Maybe around Super Bowl time? It's not exactly a great film but it has a great director (Oliver Stone), a stacked cast, and a Pacino who really carries it.
