12 Angry Men (1957) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Classic. Two of the old actors in this had a film 🎥 reunion 🫂 as the paper men bosses in All The Presidents Men!

Backlog Andy M.

Courtroom movie? I gotta go with The Verdict, or Presumed Innocent. The first is amazing with Paul Newman The second is amazing with Harrison Ford Third choice would be Runaway Jury with Gene Hackman and John Cusack

So another play that translated well to the screen is Glengarry Glen Ross. It stars Al Pacino, Ed Harris, Jack Lemon, Kevin Spacey and Alan Arkin. It also has the best 5 minutes of Alec Baldwins career.

On Golden Pond is a great movie with Henry Fonda and Jane Fonda. It’s a great movie about family and aging.

Korny

Although one must wonder if the movie would have been such a success if it had been released under it's original name: "A Dozen Upset Dudes".

Beau Mont

Hilarious, thanks for the link.

Beau Mont

Bruce Willis's second movie. He is one of the extras in the courtroom.

I can't narrow it down to just one, but I definitely know that if I were making a list of obscure films that could never win a poll that I would love to see you watch someday, I would put the 1998 mystery-comedy Zero Effect on it. Hearing Sam say she loves a detective story, I can only imagine what you two would think of it.

Tyler Foster

Great reactions to this movie! As you’re finding out with the Hitchcock movies, it’s not just him that made the storytelling so good during this era. The way the story is structured is much, much different than most movies of the recent past. Back then, it wasn’t necessary to have action-laden sequences which overwhelm the characters and story. Even lighting was used to convey tone and suspense. A non-courtroom story which is structured very well, and also in Black and White is “Fail-Safe” (1964). Henry Fonda stars in that one also.

Miles E Coburn

Amy Schumer did a whole episode on her show parodying this movie and the cast was amazing (Jeff Goldblum, Paul Giamatti) https://youtu.be/96LgRmOF9_o

Ricardo Alanis

That's a shame, he was a legend! Young Mr Lincoln, The Lady Eve, Ox-Bow Incident, My Darling Clementine, The Wrong Man, Mister Roberts, Once Upon a Time in the West

I had jury selection 3 times and was chosen to serve twice. One time I was selected they have a process where either the prosecution or defense has a veto power to eliminate you as a juror(I'm not sure how many vetoes each side has)and the defense used a veto on me. One time I was selected and actually put on a jury. The case was starting in a week and I booked time off work and everything. Day 1 of the trial we were let into the jury room and given instructions on the proceeding and that we would be called in shortly. After a longer than expected wait they finally called us into the courtroom to inform us that the defendant had plead guilty at the last minute.

The only Henry Fonda film I think I've seen is The Grapes of Wrath, which is a terrific movie

Odd Thomas

Juror 4 is not “outsmarted.” Everything about his guilty vote the entire time is based on dispassionate logic. He switches his vote after the woman’s eyewitness testimony is sufficiently questioned to the point that — taken with all the other questioned or debunked evidence — it is no longer logical to believe the boy is guilty. His not-guilty vote is just as dispassionate as his guilty vote was.

Jason Chirevas

Suspected as much. You can see it in the long takes. Every actor knew exactly their part. Also shoutout to the camera work in this, moving around the set. Is flawless.

Guston Zimasheen

Fourthed. YOU HAVE MEDDLED WITH THE PRIMAL FORCES OF NATURE Mr. BEALE!

Opie Wan

Scott Kerr

I recommended that one to Dan & Sam. Its a classic!!!!

Chris Bruneau

Very different kind of film, but one of my favorites (and perhaps my favorite Paul Newman movie), is 'The Verdict.' Also starring the great Jack Warden (the guy who wanted to go to the ballgame). Highly recommended.

Steve Mercier

Thirded.

Steve Mercier

Speaking about Westerns and Henry Fonda - my far favourite one is "Once Upon a Time in the West", which is very special, as Mr. Fonda is playing there villain

Ja Hu

While there is a courtroom sequence in it, JFK is much more about the totality of Jim Garrison’s investigation into President Kennedy’s assassination. That said, JFK is an amazing movie and an absolute must see.

Jason Chirevas

For courtroom dramas it's hard to beat JFK, starring Kevin Costner

Odd Thomas

Seconded.

Jason Chirevas

...Tony Danza? lol

Sergeant Pepper

For your next Sidney Lumet film you should watch Network. It was released the same year as Rocky and Taxi Driver and nearly swept the acting awards at the Oscars. It's still very relevant to what's going on in the world today.

Tim Raths

12 ANGRY MEN started as a teleplay by Reginald Rose for the anthology series Studio One on CBS. This was back when TV was live, so imagine taking this script with 12 actors (including two who would later do the Fonda movie) and everyone just belting it out in one go. Pretty impressive.

Jason Chirevas

DOG DAY AFTERNOON is a must, at some point.

Jason Chirevas

It’s not a classic but RUNAWAY JURY is basically the inverse of 12 ANGRY MEN in that it’s about all the outside forces that try to influence, if not outright control, a jury and what its verdict will be. Really good cast led by Gene Hackman, John Cusack, Rachel Weisz, and Dustin Hoffman.

Jason Chirevas

As someone who’s seen both versions probably two dozen times, I would not say the 1997 12 ANGRY MEN is better than the original (for a specific reason I’ll get into if Dan & Sam ever watch it) but it is definitely worth seeing.

Jason Chirevas

I’ll second the rec for WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION and THE VERDICT, and add one for ANATOMY OF A MURDER, another outstanding courtroom drama starring James Stewart.

Jason Chirevas

Another Great Martin Balsam Movies are the Cult Classic "Breakfast At Tiffany's" from 1961 With Audrey Hepburn and "Cape Fear" from 1962 with Gregory Peck ...

Florian Meier

Love your Reaction !! As always ;) Another Great Henry Fonda Movies are "Fort Apache" from 1948 with John Wayne !! Great Western and "Madigan" from 1968 !! Great Police Thriller ... Another Great Westerns of him are "The Tin Star" from 1957 and "Warlock" from 1959

Florian Meier

As classic as this movie is - the remake is even better. All the cast is top notch - James Gandolfini, Jack Lemmon, Edward James Olmos, Ozzie Davis etc. - but George C. Scott absolutely crushes. Jack Lemmon (who plays Henry Fonda's role) said something to the effect of "When George has his breakdown at the end, that's as good as acting gets." Holy shit was he right.

Sergeant Pepper

Some things that really impressed me about this movie is the actors do such a great job, that it becomes a play, like they feel like authentic and real people dealing with this, to the point that you no longer see the actor acting, but a real person dealing with real issues.

Guston Zimasheen

I’ll second that rec, especially as it’s an entire series.

Jason Chirevas

I would love a Thin Man reaction!

Birdie Num Num

Not a courtroom drama, but I think you guys would love The Thin Man. It's a very funny romantic mystery following one of cinema's all-time great couple as they solve a murder just for the fun of it.

kbobravo

The writing in this film is next level. It is really difficult to write a movie that takes place in a single room and have it be as riveting as this film still is all these years later. Great reaction.

Chris Adams

And a figure it out mystery try The Last of Sheila. Great fun!

Michael Soukup

That was supposed to be “as Gittes suggested”. Save me from this auto correct!

Michael Soukup

For courtroom and figure it out type try Witness for the Prosecution. Also as agitates suggested The Verdict is another great Lumet courtroom drama

Michael Soukup

Sam's face on every reveal. This movie is simply a masterpiece. Out of the 120 years since cinema's invention, this is one of the few, beautiful, well-written, near-flawless films. And you'll never see another movie that does as well having *twelve* characters each distinct and developed, in the span of an hour and a half. (So many modern movies can't manage to make their main character half as developed as one of these given the whole movie.) So glad you guys watched this. It was a treat to be able to see Sam watch it for the first time.

Mark

Sam, I think we can say it was a crazy variety of white males. Diversity! 😂 Juror #1, the foreman, is the actor who played the private eye in Psycho.

Jen Barnes

"You said we could throw out all the other evidence." Great line, especially because it comes from the bank clerk.

David Martin

I hope you get to explore more films directed by Sidney Lumet. Another of his films - Dog Day Afternoon was in the Pacino poll. Another great courtroom drama he directed was The Verdict, with Paul Newman. He was very much an actor's director. Sean Connery was in 5 of his films, giving his best performance in The Hill imo.

Birdie Num Num

Ironically I watched this movie a month or so ago. I was worried it would be too slow for me, but I surprisingly enjoyed it. I don't mind watching it again with you guys!

Terry Lee

Ecks. Sy. Tid. 😁

Jason Chirevas

Working on it! Likely tomorrow :) -Sam
