The Evil Dead (1981) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

The Evil Dead (1981) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

Ok i finally got around to watching y'alls watch along for this. First off i think this may have topped Arachnophobia in terms of how much laughter I got out of you guys with the jump scares. Every time a jump scare was coming i knew y'all wouldn't disappoint with the reaction. Secondly, after seeing this movie so many times I don't find it scary these days. I look at this film as a great study on how to make the most work with a very very low budget. The fact that just putting together some chocolate syrup, some oatmeal, and a little stop motion animation can gross people out in 2022 like it with y'all is a testament to how this film has held up as a horror classic.

Definitely watch both endings, so that if you eventually do move on to the "Ash vs Evil Dead" TV series, it will line up with one of them (theatrical).

Thomas Yanez

I'd love to see reactions to Carrie and Christine. Maybe they could do a themed week: Stephen King adaptions with girls' names for titles.

Future Boy

I haven't seen this since I was a kid. Great watching along! I hope this is the first of many Sam Raimi films you check out. I'd love to see the Spiderman trilogy at some point, but by far my favourite Raimi film is "A Simple Plan" (1998). It's a great little crime thriller, dark and intense, with Billy Bob Thornton, Bill Paxton, and Bridget Fonda (Melanie in Jackie Brown). I'd love to see a reaction some day!

Future Boy

Can't wait til you guys watch Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn

Ghost Crusaders

haha had no appetite after this one! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I don't know why but I have a craving for tapioca pudding and blue raspberry Jello now. Haha

Scott Kerr

Putting aside the fear of blood borne pathogens, I would much rather get blood spewed all over my face than *AHHHEM* ...............................

Alex

I love the classic hiding the face but you still see the eye poking through the fingers ;)

Alex

Haha glad you enjoyed it, Ken! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thank you! Awesome! Thanks for the recommendations! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I'm excited to see the comedy elements of the next 2 films! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I don’t think modern things are more gory than 80s / 90s horror films. There’s something about the gore in movies like this that is way worse than modern films. Most movie watchers don’t know what real violence and gore look like so even though it’s not as realistic it is incredibly more gory than the new more realistic stuff I think just coz it’s really messy with some of the stuff they do. These days I think everything is CGI and when it comes to people it’s very hard for CGI to look realistic. It’s not even a conscious thing but you can always tell the difference between a CGI person and a real human being. Similar goes for gore. Even if it isn’t realistic it’s still incredibly disgusting and terrifying because it’s an unknown for most people. The other thing is stuff that is unnatural is really frightening. The idea of someone looking like those demons look and that happening to their face/skin/etc.. it's downright petrifying.

Alex

So crazy! But so awesome that a film can be so iconic with a small budget! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Haha it was just so gross! Sequel is coming soon! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Slowly making it's way! Full Length now posted :) -Sam

TBR Schmitt

We hadn't considered Ash vs. Evil Dead, but it sounds like a very popular recommendation! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thank you for the suggestion! We'll need to check it out :) -SAM

TBR Schmitt

I didn't even know there were sequels to the Human Centipede! The idea of that film is so disturbing, but the gore on this one is next level! Excited? for the sequels haha -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Can't wait for the sequels! Thanks for the recommendation! We'll need to see what's available for us to stream :) -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Definitely adding it to our list! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Haha! Always those bookcases! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

So gross!! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

No way!! What a cool connection! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Yes! The remake is definitely getting a lot of praise, we'll need to add it to the list :) -Sam

"Child's Play"? ;-)

Jeff Mills

What I love about Sam Raimi was his unique take on things. When I think of DEAD BY DAWN, I often think of the moment where Ash is at the bridge and the sun is going down in ellipse mode. I'm always grateful that Raimi gets a chance to play around. I haven't seen it yet, but from what I hear, DR. STRANGE is about as Raimi and he will ever get.

Philip Davetas

Childs play compared to what?

Ken Veader

This is a classic, loved seeing Sam freak out throughout this movie haha

Ken Veader

This movie is child's play compared to most modern things. This movie's gross, sure but it just isn't realistic looking at all so it's just a goofy movie, for me nowadays. This one is a whole lot more more scary than the sequels. This is a horror film, the others aren't as bad. All in all, very quality movie for it's time and budget. Totally put Bruce Campbell on the map. That actor's so cool! :)

Logan Kerlee

Great Reaction :) Another Classic Horror Movie is "The Omen" from 1976 With Gregory Peck !!!! Another Great Sam Raimi Film is "The Gift" from 2000 With Keanu Reeves and Cate Blanchet

Florian Meier

@Sam, don't worry about the second movie. It has more blood, but overall less gore. The second movie is a lot more enjoyable because it adds a lot of comedy elements to help ease the tensions.

Vwlss Nvwls

I have a collector's edition of this movie on DVD and the case looks like the Necrinomicon (the book of the dead) with a rubbery feel to it. :D

Vwlss Nvwls

Each of the Evil Dead sequels is sort of a reboot from where the previous one left off, quickly remaking/rewriting the backstory before going into whole new territory and having tons of fun along the way.

Nick of Time

"Hey look, the sun's out!" "Oh goody!" lmao Sam

Scott Kerr

They said it will be late. I refreshed the channel since Monday until they gave the message because I was as eager as you. It will come!

PIG

There are so many things that I remember I loved about Evil Dead 2. All I remember were those ground level camera shots that were creepy as hell. Obviously the first Evil Dead had those but they scared the bijeebers outa me in the second.

Scott Kerr

Yeah, this film was made for $370k which wasn't nothing in 1981 money if you're just making some present day dialogue driven film., But when you're making a film so dependent on visual effects, then that budget is quite small.

Jeffrey Miller

Poor, sweet Sam, now scared for life, lol. Now you have joined the legion of Dead Heads. Now that you've gotten through this one, know that the sequel, Evil Dead 2 is something truly special, not to be missed, Sam Raimi really made a classic, the entertainment value of that is off the charts.

Mike LL

uhm on a side note, what happened to Road to Perdition ?

24fps_

I haven't seen it yet. Or 3.

Alex

I concur. I love that 2013 movie.

Philip Davetas

I used to think of DEAD BY DAWN as a remkae, but in reality, the "sequel" part of the movie starts when Rotten Apple Face flies into Ash's mouth and tosses him across the woods. That's where the story official continues.

Philip Davetas

Ya know. I love both endings. The Director's Cut does a pretty good job of going back to its roots. Hm, I didn't intend that pun. But it's a little creepier and makes for the post-apocalyptic ending more fitting. But the theatrical ending is just so much fun.

Philip Davetas

This was a blast watching it with you guys? Are you guys going to attempt ASH VS. EVIL DEAD? It's still a little gory, but it's more fun. It seems there are two worlds of EVIL DEAD. The Ash Williams universe and the really dark and scary ones like the 2013 movie. And there's a new one coming out soon. And, Sam, DEAD BY DAWN (ED2) will make you laugh at least. Still nasty, but not as intense as this one.

Philip Davetas

You should read or watch YT movies about the making of of Evil Dead. It's very interesting. Also, after you watch ED II, watch the Dock Ock operation room scene of Spidey 2 and you'll see lots of references.

Yann Laliberté

There is grosser than Human Centipede. Human Centipede 2 👍🏻

Nick Sneddon

I originally saw Evil Dead 2 because my understanding was it's basically the same movie, but remade. But all I can tell you is I can corroborate what Daniel said about expecting things to happen here that happened in the 2nd one but did not happen here. Ash seemed to be way less badass here, and also this is way less comedic than I remember. I remember telling someone in a comment that this is more of a comedy than a horror film but the version I just watched is definitely not a comedy. As far as the stuff that is the same from the 2nd one I have no idea about it at all. It's been so long since I've watched it that I don't remember anything except for the iconic stuff which is likely what Daniel was expecting here that did not happen. But also wow Sam. Grosser than The Human Centipede? I guess in some ways there's a lot more scenes that are gross.. I think nothing is grosser than Human Centipede in terms of what it is but the quantity of grossness in this film is much much more.

Alex

Just finished it, went exactly as I hoped. You guys are the best!!

Nonimal

Yes, sorry! No idea why YT was taking so incredibly long to process this video :( -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Jeez, that horror poll (that this won) was full of shouldn't-even-be-theres :( edit: Except for Body Snatchers, obviously.

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

I remember the first time I saw this I was blown away, and Evil Dead 2 is even better. Army of Darkness is the best of the bunch, but more of a comedy than the other two. When you two do watch Army of Darkness, I recommend the theatrical ending, but if you get a chance you should also check out the alternate ending. Both endings are good, but I feel the theatrical suits the movie overall.

Vwlss Nvwls

Since you guys keep saying you are just watching the 3 films, I beg you watch the remake as well. Just because that film is still one that I have to mentally hype myself up to watch or watch with other people because it is THAT scary! And I am a 30 year old man lmao

Jonathon Dragovan

"You're under more furniture?!" LOL

Thomas Yanez

Nah you gotta start with the first one

Ken Veader

Great watch along. I hadn't seen this since I was 7 years old and its still as gross and creepy as I remember.

Joseph Tamburo

Since you did watch this one, note that they lost the rights to the footage of the first movie before making "Evil Dead 2", so that movie starts out with a long recap of the first movie. They don't worry too much about making it an exact recap, so it gets confusing to some people that "Evil Dead 2" is kind of a remake instead of a sequel. It is a sequel, you just have to get past the recap portion.

Thomas Yanez

Yeah, they should've started with Evil Dead 2, because it and Army of Darkness with the amazing TV series all blend together. Evil Dead and the Evil Dead Reboot are good too but feel like standalone films.

Samuel Bruce

I haven't watched yet, still waiting for a higher video resolution, but I watched the intro. If you saw "Army of Darkness" first, then this might not be what you expect. There is a huge shift in "mood" between this and "Evil Dead 2" with the addition of the camp/comedy that became a staple of this series all the way through the "Ash vs Evil Dead" TV series, which I hope you'll be watching at some point.

Thomas Yanez

Here's another fun fact about Sam Raimi, back in 1984 he moved out to LA and shared a house in Silver Lake with the Coen brothers, Frances McDormand, Holly Hunter, and Kathy Bates. Joel Coen had first met Raimi while helping edit "Evil Dead", and Raimi helped the Coens launch their first film, "Blood Simple".

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Youtube needs time to encode the higher-res versions. Should be there eventually.

olly.enn

The (2013) remake is actually pretty good. I hope you will react to it some time, perhaps add it to the October "Spooky Season" poll?

Mr. Writhms

Is there a higer-res version of this full length? I'm currently only getting 360p.
