Minority Report (2002) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

I do think human nature is less black-and-white than "they could stop at any time." One of the scenes that I think is good is the one where Anderton comes face-to-face with Leo Crow and believes he is going to kill him. In my opinion, the movie gives him a strong enough emotional reason that one could be convinced that instinct might win out over reason. On the other hand, I'm more inclined to be bothered by things the movie has settled as part of its premise that give me pause. I understand Anderton's specific turmoil in that scene, but how did precrime arrive at the current status where criminals are immediately silenced with the halos? The movie tries to act like it's a revelation that Anderton has the power to change his own fate given the right information, but it feels like exactly the kind of question a smart person would've asked well before Precrime was established.

My issue is I get stuck on the concept of "precrime". I dunno if it's just my autistic brain or what. But when I saw it in the theatre, I kept turning to my friend, going, "But hooooow? Intention is not action. They could stop at any time. Why are they putting so much faith on the prediction of a human being? A fallible human being?". I don't buy the few lines they tossed in when Witwer brought it up either. I do enjoy watching it for the Spielberg-ness of it tho. That concept bothers me every time I watch it.

Donna Castellano

D'oh. Can't figure out how I confused them. For Fuller I like Pickup on South Street.

Tyler Foster

Fuller didn't direct Thieves Highway, Jules Dassin did.

I don't think Sam was being as critical, but if there's a reason I can't love Minority Report, it's that it feels like an inferior version of the same basic mystery as L.A. Confidential. Lamar Burgess is Dudley Smith and Danny Witwer is Jack Vincennes. It would be a lot better if the movie more fully engaged with the ethics of precrime, which is the more sci-fi aspect of the movie. Still, Samantha Morton is really good as Agatha, and there are effective parts of the film. By the way, the movie playing in the eye surgery apartment is called House of Bamboo, by director Samuel Fuller. I wasn't an especially big fan of that one, but Fuller's Thieves Highway is an incredible film noir.

Every time I see Danny get shot I feel like he should whisper "Rolo Tomassi" as he fades away

Joseph Tamburo

He was on a lot of cocaine when he made this movie, lol

Jason Dolan

was?

@WastedPo 💯 percent agree!

I totally agree about Williams's score for this movie. (Also, the insert shots for humor during some of the action scenes really didn't work.) Some of his score seemed to actually work *against* the action. (I feel even more strongly about his score for "War of the Worlds.") For some weird reason, Williams was creating middling scores at this point in his career (at least for my tastes). I remember thinking that he might've been losing his mojo. However, he quickly rebounded. I honestly think his work for the Star Wars sequel trilogy is as memorable and awesome as anything he's ever written.

WastedPo

I never really like Far and away, but the others were all excellent!

Chris Bruneau

Ooooo “Munich” is f*cking GOOD

Nick of Time

I really like this movie, but there are certain parts (usually action/chase sequences) where it suddenly takes on a very Indiana Jones-ish tone, especially with John Williams’s score and it just doesn’t fit with the futuristic setting for me. I love Mr Williams’s work, but I think Spielberg should’ve went in a different musical direction with Minority Report. That’s it. That’s my one, singular complaint. The rest of the film is basically perfect. 😊

Nick of Time

Jeez, that Colin Farrell was one handsome devil.

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

I took my high school girlfriend to see this when it first came out. Upon watching again I think it's still pretty good, but there's a couple things I thought could be better. I feel like this movie kind of drags in the second act and think the movie could be just a little shorter. My biggest complaint is in the third act when the dialogue becomes all exposition and it really feels like the movie thinks the audience is too dumb to figure some of these things out. Danny pretty much explains how the Lively murder happens, but just a short while later Anderton goes over every detail of how Lamar murdered Lively including the stuff Danny already explained. Why would Anderton have to explain how he figured out Lamar killed Lively? If Anderton just said, "I know how you killed Anne Lively," Lamar would have known how he figured it out. Again, I think this movie is pretty good, I just like to be critical of even the things I like. Now for the thing that doesn't really affect my enjoyment of the film but I find funny. The UI for the computers are ridiculous and in some ways seem way less efficient than a keyboard and mouse.

Ethan from Lost. Yall should watch Lost.

AI is really good.

Fun Trivia: the hotel clerk at the desk where Leo Crow is staying is played by Tom Cruise’s cousin

Wholeheartedly agree in recommending "A.I." and "Catch Me If You Can". Spielberg had a crazy output during just that short span of a few years, with the following two also being really well done: "War of the Worlds", and "Munich". I also really liked "The Terminal", and feel it gets unfair hate due to its romcom leanings.

Christopher B.

Crap, you are right. My bad. I guess I just assume everyone knows that is what that film is best known for, but I'm also old and saw it in theaters, lol.

Shaun2342!

Caaareful there Shaun. I’m not the spoiler police but tread carefully. 😊 But that shouldn’t be too hard to do with mega blurring and/or only showing TBR’s reactions in that/those scenes. But idk how the editing process is done, I’m just guessing. Edit: I just made myself laugh out loud. Imagine TBR’s future YouTube reaction to “Eyes Wide Shut”, and when it gets to THAT part it suddenly cuts to a video of Daniel mid-editing and he’s like “yeah, I just can’t with this scene. It’s simply just way too much to edit. If you want to see our full reaction to this scene and everything else in our channel, the link to our Patreon is in the description. And with that, let’s get back to the movie.” 🤣😂🤣😂

NO WAY! I had no idea -Sam

I mean, I love EWS as the next guy...just unsure if they want to edit around the orgy.

Shaun2342!

Speaking of Cruise and Kubrick. "Eyes Wide Shut".

Nick of Time

Don't forget about "A Scanner Darkly". Another must-watch from the mind of Philip K Dick.

Nick of Time

Yes. And also, fk Hillary

So a couple quick things: Spielberg had this thing called the "Running Man Trilogy" in the early 2000's. The films were AI, Minority Report, and Catch Me if You Can. They all came out within like 2 years of each other. I strongly recommend you guys watch AI. It isn't going to win any polls because it is pretty divisive, but it is a super interesting movie. Spielberg and Kubrick were good friends. Kubrick intended to make AI before he died and Spielberg took it over and finished the project for him. When it was first released it was pretty misunderstood but it has gained a lot more recognition over the years. I don't know how often you guys watch movies that don't win polls these days, or aren't a part of a series, but seriously- consider AI. It's a good one. Also- Tom Cruise-- check out Magnolia.

Shaun2342!

I thought it was more like "unravulling"

All his lies are un-ravioling. Yup stealing that from now on.

Mike Adams

I'm still waiting for that big budget super blockbuster based on "Galactic Pot-Healer".

Thomas Yanez

TBR, that "universe" you mention several times is simply a brilliant sci-fi writer named Philip K. Dick, whose books (for whatever reason) have translated to big screen really really well. Blade Runner (1982), based on Dick's 1968 novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" Total Recall (1990), based on the short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale" Minority Report (2002), based on the short story "The Minority Report" The Adjustment Bureau (2011), loosely based on the short story "Adjustment Team". That last one I definitely recommend, if you hadn't seen it, it's also very good. All in all, Philip K. Dick has an incredible body of work, while not being a well known writer in popular culture.

Alec S

I saw someone recommend it a long time ago but a great sci-fi movie is Predestination 🤯 Awesome reaction as always, you guys are great!

Nonimal

With Memorial Day coming up, I'd like to highly recommend 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. It's a brilliant film, and a spot-on adaptation of the true events from 10 years ago, that showcases the sacrifice and sheer determination of these brave Americans. I can't praise this movie enough.

David Crabtree

This is one of my all-time favorite sci-fi movies. I haven't seen your reaction yet, but I predict it will be great. 😉

Mr. Writhms
