especially in a sports situation, athletes fake injuries all the time. Robby should of quit the fight

Miguel didn't break any rules. The only thing he did wrong in that fight is when he twisted Robby's wrist. Kicking him in the shoulder was righteous and absolutely fair in Karate tourney's

Yeah I agree, but I really think the last lesson that Johnny taught them at the tournament was awesome, and awe inspiring, and the true meaning of no mercy. He didn't say to fight dirty, and he even told Miguel not to fight dirty.
When Miguel said "There's nothing dirty about winning" Miguel had it all wrong. Sometimes kids just learn the wrong stuff or misunderstand stuff.
And a lot of the stuff that Johnny initially did teach them was just saying word for word what Kreese told the students. I feel this is more of a callback than Johnny teaching the same things that Kreese did.
Like in the first episodes when he's like "If someone confronts you in the street, in competition they are the enemy. The enemy deserves no mercy. Is there a problem Mr. Diaz?" is exactly the same as "If someone confronts you in the street, in competition they are the enemy. The enemy deserves no mercy. Is there a problem Mr. Lawrence?" from Karate Kid 1.
And yeah I agree about the radio silence thing. Sometimes people have to be polarized and it's either black or white.. Like because Sam was literally physically unable to see that Miguel texted/called her it's automatically Miguel that's the bad guy because someone has to be the bad guy.
Miguel was totally justified when he told her "You don't get to turn it around on me." when she said "Have you been drinking?" coz it seemed like she was going to start blaming him, even though she didn't text him back, AND she showed up with another guy AND they were holding hands.
It's just like most of the other things in the show, huge misunderstanding because no one tells the truth/communicates..
But TBH this is how it happens in real life. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one that actually tells the truth, and TBR and Sam apparently. Most other people just act like the characters on this show. So it's not at all unrealistic.
Oh yeah, and the first time I ever drank alcohol was at a high school party and I got so drunk I ended up in the hospital with alcohol poisoning so yeah. Later on I learned when to cut myself off so I wouldn't get too inebriated.

A defense for Miguel: he had a bunch of crap happening to him (including Samantha lying to him) and him getting radio silence on responses (not Sam's fault). This led to him drinking for real for the first time time (come on, you don't remember the first time you got drunk?). This was also his first relationship (remember how you handled your first relationship/breakup when you were young?)
And btw, he hit Samantha, BY ACCIDENT. He was trying to hit Robbie, not her. Sure, not good either way, but he didn't hit her on purpose like some abusive boyfriend.
After that, while vulnerable, he got a TERRIBLE lesson from his sensei (i.e., no mercy) who he had put all his trust into. Robbie had Daniel, Miguel had a bad teacher (or at least a teacher who was behaving poorly because he was also feeling like crap). Miguel was also battling, from the start, a shitty social situation.
Robbie also had a bad background (bad family, but not getting socially bullied or humilated like Miguel), but he was basically an asshole the whole series (including his entire manipulation of Daniel just to get back at his Dad not to mention stealing from people). Yeah, he got better at the end, but Miguel was growing the whole series but because he messed up the last few days, we're supposed to turn on him and root for Robbie who was good at the very end?
To use an analogy, if this were a fight where it goes to decision, Miguel won the first 8 rounds out of 10, but Robbie won the last two and we're supposed to pretend that Robbie won the fight?
I don't agree. I don't like the turn, but I was happy to see Miguel win because I'm not willing to disregard all the positive stuff he did the whole season because he messed up at the very end.

That's what I love about this show. They blend the black and white mentality for more of the gray area. You might like one character one episode and completely despised them the next episode. And the crazy part is, most of their decision making is justified since we Know why they turned to those decisions and impulsiveness,
This show literally shows balance. Haha.

I agree with how Miguel should not have done what he did and neither Hawk with kicking Robby when his back was turned. I dont think Johnny taught that either behind the scenes which is why you can tell he was upset how he won. I think it was just teenagers being too stupid and immature at that point.

I think this works out pretty well. Coz they're supposed to be new to karate so they aren't that good yet. So it actually worked out in their favor that the actors weren't that good yet.
I am not sure if it was always like this, but for the last season at least the stunt doubles mostly just train the actors and the actors actually do the fight scenes themselves for the most part. The only time they don't do it is if it's a dangerous stunt I believe.

This isn't about whether Miguel used "good" strategy to win at all costs. The point here was to show Miguel sliding to the dark side, fighting without honor. Nobody cares about what is technically allowed or possible in the tournament.

The crazy part is, this is by far the weakest season when it comes to the fight choreography. And it’s obviously still very good. Can’t wait for Season 2 next week!

True but this is a karate tournament with rules, and under 18 tournament. These are kids not UFC fighters. Then there's the thing where he yanked Robby's shoulder down when Robby was trying to help him up.
I would say that in a street fight not exploiting your opponent's weakness is foolish, but not in a sport situation, unless that is something that is allowed and the other person will do the same to you.
Still. it's speaks a lot more of your skill if you're to beat someone at 100% and not take advantage of weakness.
Alex
2022-03-15 06:05:51 +0000 UTC
Miguel did nothing wrong in the tournament. In combat sports people can fake injuries and you can't allow that to change your gameplan. You can argue Miguel was being mean, sure, but in a professional fight to not exploit an opponent's weakness is foolish

I don't think there is any weakest season at all. The only thing that's bad about Cobra Kai is how short the episodes are and how fast they go by.
When season 4 came out on New Year's eve I binged the entire season in one evening. And then it's like MAN .. I gotta wait a whole year for season 5 !

S2 is definitely my least favorite season.
Donna Castellano
2022-03-15 02:00:23 +0000 UTC
Miguel has been my favorite character from the start. I was more angry at Johnny during the All Valley because he's chastizing Miguel for what he's doing and Miguel is rightly confused as that's how Johnny trained them. If he hadn't hyped them up with the "No Mercy" speech before the tournament, I feel it would have gone differently. "No mercy" to a bunch of kids who've been picked on and bullied their entire lives is gonna read as "do whatever it takes". Add on Johnny giving all of these real life scenarios that justify not having any mercy, ones that Miguel was definitely relating to in that moment, the outcome becomes this. Daniel reminds us with Miyagi's words, "there is no such thing as a bad student, only a bad teacher". It's a cycle. Johnny finally understood what Daniel was trying to tell him when he was equating things he saw his students doing to what he and his friends did at the '84 All Valley. So Johnny tries to be the little Dutch Boy, plugging his fingers into the holes of the dam, by telling these kids he's already riled up (after stuffing their heads with the old Cobra Kai crap) to ease up. That's why what happens in S2 is even more poignant. Long story short, I never hated Miguel. I hated to see him corrupted by that mindset and the fires stoked when an angry Johnny ranted about "No mercy" for like 5 minutes.

That really holds true for me with a certain character coming in S2. Absolutely hated this person until recently.

It's insane, looking back that season 1 might be the 'weakest' season of the show and it's still really, really good. Now the fun really begins

What's weird as hell about that though is it seemed almost like a back fist, and I coulda sworn I've seen the characters use this in the show when fighting, I could be wrong. Maybe it's just the camera angle.
but agreed Miguel is not a bad guy, but he is just misapplying what he knows about Cobra Kai (the teachings). At least what Johnny is trying to teach. I think what Johnny is teaching really beautifully shows the nuance in Strike first, strike hard, no mercy, using different situations in life as a metaphor but he actually didn't really teach no mercy until the last episode which I think is what his mistake was.. coz all they know is what it sounds like.
And I don't think Johnny was talking about showing people no mercy I think he was talking about showing life no mercy.

This is so true. In later seasons I definitely had characters that I .. I'm not gonna say disliked.. I dunno if TBR or Sam actually dislikes Miguel but like... Let's just say I had very very negative things to say about them and then as time went on it changed just like you say.
Alex
2022-03-15 00:35:15 +0000 UTC
"...dramatic shift on how I feel about a lot of characters" - This holds true over all the seasons. The kids (and most of the adults) are complex enough to shift. There are really no clear good guys and bad guys, just when I really hate a character, everything changes. You're gonna love it!

Great double episode finale, super enjoying your reactions to the show and excited for the journey to continue, you can tell TBR that season 2 has plenty "up it's belt" to keep him entertained
Also I just wanted to clarify that Miguel did not intentionally hurt Sam or punch her in the face,he took a swing at Robbie and his upper arm caught Sam accidently on the follow through, but he was still in the wrong to even put himself in the situation for that to even happen

Johnny is the sensei of the misfits. He makes fun of them and pretends that he doesn't have anything in common with them, but he knows the truth. I think Kreese was the same with the original "Cobra Kai". Johnny, Bobby, Tommy, and, yes, Dutch, they were all misfits, too. I think Dutch was like Hawk, a kid who was bullied and reinvented himself by dyeing his hair bleach blonde and coming up with this new, alpha male persona.

That's got to sting. Your own flesh and blood defending another man against you. More than anything, this show is really about fathers and father figures. Miyagi, Kreese, Daniel, Johnny, etc.

Season 3 was the first season on Netflix. The first two seasons were on YouTube. Then we had the Covid pandemic which pushed Season 3's premiere back to January 2021. It was originally planned for spring 2020, but resurfaced on Netflix in January 2021. Then, Season 4 was just released in January 2022. I'm hoping we don't have to wait until next year for Season 5.

This season was so phenomenal. When I first heard back in 2017 that they were doing a "Cobra Kai" TV series, I was very skeptical. I thought it was going to be a joke. Then I saw the first trailer in March 2018 and I was so psyched. Watched all 10 episodes in one day on (then) YouTube Red. Watched Season 2 on YouTube Premium and the next two seasons on Netflix. I suspected that Kreese would make his return, but seeing him at the end of this episode was so gratifying. You can't have "Cobra Kai" without Kreese, right?
And, TBR and Samantha, I LOVE being a Patreon and subscriber to your YouTube channel. It's so awesome to get to watch these episodes again and get your perspectives. I will NEVER post any spoilers. All I'm going to say is that this show gets even better with each season. :)

2022-03-14 23:20:38 +0000 UTC
Yeah I was on board with him winning.. but not how he won. How he won was really screwed up, and makes Johnny look bad when he says "I'm just doing what you taught us."
Unless Johnny taught some Kreese type stuff behind the scenes they just got it wrong. At no time did Johnny say that taking advantage of weaknesses is the right way, which is definitely a "Cobra Kai" method as taught by Kreese, nor is kicking someone in the back out of anger in any way a bad ass move. There is nothing more cowardly than that.
But it is possible that behind the scenes Johnny did teach them those lessons he learned from Kreese but I just don't see that, because Johnny really meant it when he said his Cobra Kai is different.

Yeah thats what makes this show so great cuz as with the times, we all know, or should know that things are not black and white, nothing is clear cut there is always a grey area and this show gives us that! We can relate to every character to some degree. The writers are so good with that and i can't wait to see your reaction to the rest of the series!!

It's funny I can't really remember what I thought when I first watched it. but I love Miguel. I love the way he looks when he stands his ground. He has this thing like he looks disappointed that the other person did what they did.

2022-03-14 22:54:15 +0000 UTC
Well he did have ulterior motives with Samantha. I mean he genuinely liked her, he's not a bad guy but she does have a boyfriend and he was fishing for problems to use to try to persuade her to switch to Team Robby. :)
There's nothing wrong with being bummed that the girl you like has a boyfriend, but it's not really cool to go fishing for reasons for them to break up. But totally understandable.
Robby is a good kid. Probably honestly one of the best on the show.
Alex
2022-03-14 22:51:56 +0000 UTC
Yeah it's tough commenting about stuff when you have seen the whole show and you can't say anything that will alude to anything that happens. lol
For example, when the first episode dropped .. I commented that I was watching an interview with Martin Kove on YouTube and I was like "Sorry Mr. Kove!!! I gotta go!!!" but then I deleted it because I'm like shit...!! That might tip Sam and TBR off to Kreese coming back.. like they might think "Why would he be watching an interview with Martin Kove?"

At this point I think Demetri is doing what a lot of people do and just like finding a problem when someone changes or betters themselves. Hawk didn't really do anything until the tournament because of the comment made by Robby. I personally really don't like it when people do what Dimetri was doing saying "It's Eli Moscowitz" like forcing it .. Let his name be what he wants it to be. It's not like he's creating an alias to go on a crime spree, it's just a nickname, or brand name.. like Cher is Cher. And Johnny was the one who gave it to him. People tend to want to drag people back down when they wanna improve themselves, which further can speed up the person's path to the other side.
But obviously he is showing signs that he really does not understand Johnny's teachings of don't be a p***y because attacking someone when their back is turned is the true p***y move. But this is often how it turns out for better or worse, unfortunately. When someone is at one extreme and they try to switch it up or get better they unfortunately go to the other extreme.
You see this with people when they get really hurt in a break up by a guy or gal. Guys will tend to want to go around and sleep with as many women as possible while women will completely write off relationships and praise the gospel of being single forever and having fun with their friends.

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense about Hawk. He was afraid of regressing back to being that kid with the cleft lip, and he tried to hide his anxiety with rage by going after Robby's arm.
He's so traumatized that he's willing to go past the edge to not lose the reputation he's gotten since getting his haircut. He's becoming Hawk so much that he's losing the Eli in him. Even Demetri was quick to realize that.

2022-03-14 22:02:31 +0000 UTC
Oh also what TBR said about Johnny preparing them for winning but he never prepared them for losing. I never even thought about that but that is very true. Aisha wasn't ready for that. but it's like I said in my other comment. Nobody's perfect. None of them did what they did in that tournament because they wanted to hurt someone else, they either did it because they were upset about losing or they were in pain. I forget who she fought but when they said whatever to her that they said she was in flight or flight mode. You don't do the right thing in that mode because of your conscience. You do the right thing because of being prepared and taught and then putting it into practice.
That comment about the "stupid haircut" really got to Hawk. His confidence is covering up a very traumatized very hurt kid and his identity is very fragile. That's not to say the confidence is not real. People are layers. Remember he's the kid that the entire school was laughing at and making fun of his lip and his mom was clueless as how to help him. He finally has people treating him with respect and not bullying him and he's terrified of losing that.

Love your videos guys. You have no idea how crazy it gets from here. This is easily going to be your favorite series to watch. Yeah one of the most powerful scenes I think is when Johnny walks in with Daniel and Robby is there, and Robby gets between them and says if you're gonna fight him you need to fight me first and Johnny says "You gotta be kiddin me." The way he said that was just so perfect and you can see Johnny's everything just deflate in that moment.

I never had any doubts. I don't remember when it was just season 1 or season 2. but the show is just so great and knowing that the same people are doing it and the decisions they've made. Like I trust that they won't screw it up or even if they hire new writers that they won't screw that up because everything they've done with the show has been perfect. I don't think they would let something bad happen to it *knock on wood*.

What I love most about this show is how it takes the “black-and-white, good and bad”ness of the movies and flips that on its head. There’s so much more to these characters, which is just great.
As a mother, the situation with Robby hurts my heart so much and I can’t watch this episode without getting emotional. It’s such a shitty situation for him. However, I feel for Miguel, too. Johnny is his father figure and he is literally just doing what he taught him.
William Zabka is just perfect in this role and I really love his portrayal of Johnny and the emotion he puts into it.
So excited for season 2! It just gets better from here and I’m so ready for y’all’s reaction to it. 🙌🏻

When Johnny said that Kreese was dead I always thought he meant like actually dead. If you remember in Karate Kid 3, Terry Silver told Mr. Miyagi and Daniel that Kreese had died.. Apparently Kreese "dying," is a thing.
I was shocked at the amplitude of the reaction to Miguel. He was completely wasted, and he had never drank at a party before much less been drunk or even know what it's like or that he shouldn't drink so much and he had no one to guide him in that. It's like when Johnny got in a fight with that guy at the bar and he told the guy he was kicking his ass but then kicked air and got his butt kicked. Miguel was trying to hit Robby and missed. Should he have done that? No, but he was completely wasted without even knowing what that's like or how much alcohol messes you up. Miguel's human. Nobody's perfect.
I highly criticized Miguel for texting her all day as that's very very bad. He should have just waited until he talked to her in school, or whenever.
And Robby was totally making a move. He pretended to be injured so that he could go out with Samantha, like he had intentions. Not bad ones, just guy ones. He's in a place that many guys know all too well-- You meet a girl, you like the girl, and she has a boyfriend, and then he was even beginning to find reasons to break them up. "Why does he care if you're late?" And I think Sam was being sarcastic when she said "I can get down on my own." Just like when Miguel was showing her the stance she said "And you wanna put your hands on my hips?"
I think one of the things this show does perfectly (well it does everything perfectly) is show how people aren't perfect. You can't judge someone based on how they behave in one situation or in one episode. I see people do that a lot they write someone off because of one situation or one thing they did. It makes life harder for the person who's making the mistakes.
And with Hawk. I don't think there's anything wrong with his *confidence*, or anything at all really until the tournament. When Samantha said "Confidence is great, but just don't let it go into where you start..." I thought she was going to say "being a bully" or "bullying." Which is absolutely correct, but I feel like confidence is called arrogance/cockiness by so many people. There is such a thing as arrogance, usually it involves putting other people down, but no where in at least episode 9 was Hawk hurting anyone else.
I'm with Sam on the Aisha thing. Yasmin totally deserved that and she didn't get in a fight or hurt her. I think that's what no mercy means. There's a lot of nuance there and I don't think Johnny really explained it all that well, which he is now aware after seeing Hawk and Miguel's behavior.
Don't get me wrong. What they did was extremely messed up and they should pay for it, just.. "Robby kicking the [crap] out of him" is a little extreme IMO, but then again TBR always with the "Man I hope these guys die really soon" LOL.
I hope this wasn't too long. I was actually expecting a much larger reaction to Kreese being back, then Miguel's actions. If what he did was really as bad as what was inferred Sam would have never spoken with him at the tournament. People make mistakes.
I constantly have to remind myself of that myself and try to not be too harsh on people that let me down.

When I first watched season 1, I was too invested in Miguel to turn on him. Plus, I didn't really like Robby at first and when he met Samantha, I saw him as a threat to all that Miguel had accomplished, including the girl he had found. When Miguel started his descent, I was dissapointed but I could not root against him no matter what. Without giving anything away for the following seasons, I have come to love both characters and I think you will also. You are in for such a great ride as you go forward with each season.

The way I see it Robbie stopped having ulterior motives once he started learning karate quth Daniel. I don't think learning karate was part of his "plan", it just happened. I think, at the start, he just wanted the Larusso Motor personnalised shirt to pissed Johnny. But Daniel's teaching brought peace finally in his life that he was done with revenge.
