try ITS ALIVE (1,2 & 3). - BASKET CASE (1,2,3) - THE DEVIL TIMES 5

dw

Don’t forget Land of The Dead and all the others that came after that. … Actually on second thought, yeah, forget about those. Stick with the trilogy. 😆

Nick of Time

15-year-old me was in for a big surprise when he rented and watched NOTLD for the first time, thinking it was something cheesy and bad he could laugh at MST3K-style. He was wrong.

Nick of Time

Have you watched The Lighthouse? Same director as The Witch. Really good, disturbing and weird. 👍🏻

Nick of Time

I really love it. But it's a bit of philosophical horror film - kind of about the necessity for people to have a spiritual experience and how whacked that can get in harsh circumstances.

Neal Romanek

The Witch never wins polls, unfortunately. It's the Existenz to Midsommar's Matrix. It is beautiful and . . . unexpectedly effective. I'm actually okay with keeping The Witch for myself.

Brad Bunch

Same. It gets in your head.

Pixie

It's not "the rosetta stone" for American horror, that's a (typically) overblown comment. And what the hell is up with this zombie fixation? Like zombies were some kind of breakthrough in cinema or something. Very odd. And since Kennedy was killed in '63 and "Night of the Living Dead" came out in 1968, you've got some unaccounted time there, Mike.

Toc

....it certainly doesn't hold up to "Rosemary's Baby", it's progenitor.

Toc

Zombies existed for years in movies, going back to at least "White Zombie" (early 1930s), "I Walked With A Zombie" (early 1940s). Nor did "Night Of The Living Dead " "kick off" the "whole zombie thing". It's not like there was a dopey "zombie craze" like the silly one we're in now. There certainly was not a bunch of zombie movies made immediately after in imitation, or even for years afterwards.

Tic Toc Melody

Fantastic movie.

Tic Toc Melody

Two other Polanski horror films - the Catherine Deneuve crazy-fest Repulsion and the horror comedy The Fearless Vampire Killers (with Sharon Tate).

Neal Romanek

The 70's Body Snatchers (Jeff Goldblum, Donald Sutherland, Leonard Nimoy...) is great!!

Neal Romanek

This is some really good guidance.

Neal Romanek

Another early "zombie" classic is The Last Man On Earth (1964) with Vincent Price. It was the first adaptation of Richard Matheson's I Am Legend, which was made again as The Omega Man and then once more as the 2007 Will Smith I Am Legend.

Neal Romanek

The Witch (also by studio A24 who did Hereditary) is one of my favorites of recent years. History meets horror, which is kind of my jam.

Neal Romanek

It's so great.

Neal Romanek

Yep.

Neal Romanek

Hereditary is a flippin' horror mastepiece as far as I'm concerned. But I'm putting my vote in for Night Of The Living Dead which invented the entire modern zombie genre.

Neal Romanek

One of my favorite horrors. Just plain fun :) … good story development, neat characters, AWESOME effects. Only a bit spooky is it’s drawback.

PIG

I know it won’t win, but I would love to see you guys react to Fright Night, it’s so much fun.

Jim Tatro

All great choices. I went ahead with Hereditary because the 1st time I saw it I was like WTF did I just watch?!? It's a modern day classic that just stays in your head!

Rick Trujillo

I voted for Night of the Living Dead because it’s a classic which is still genuinely unsettling. Looks like Hereditary is winning the poll, but it’s a modern classic in my book so I can’t complain.

Nick of Time

Fright Night is a classic.

esclad

I think you have to start with Night of the Living Dead. Not that's such a great movie, but the low-budget, black and white style makes it even scarier to me. And it kicked off the whole zombie thing (although there's a really funny Twilight Zone episode from 1964 titled "Mr. Garrity and the Graves" that has zombies rising from the graves).

David Martin

It would be a real shame to watch Hereditary before Rosemary's Baby, guys. In terms of psychological horror, religious terror, and horror movies made for adults, Polanski really created the blueprint for Hereditary with Rosemary's Baby. Also, it's not so upsetting to watch. See: your Deer Hunter reaction . . . .

Brad Bunch

Every self-respecting lover of film as an art-form should either be subscribed to the Criterion site or have a healthy amount of their releases on DVD/Blu-Ray. That being said, could be a pipe dream to hope for some reactor to throw caution to the wind and dive into world cinema and art house

Bert Taverner

Any love for the Fright Night (2011) remake? Personally, I much prefer it. I think it's my favourite Colin Farrell performance (after In Bruges.) Historically-speaking, the original NOTLD can't be beat; obviously. Nevertheless, once again, I think I prefer the 1990 remake. Tony Todd was so good! Finally, I think it's too bad that Body Snatchers (1978) got left off the poll. That's gotta be in my top 5 horrors of all time!

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Hereditary is the most modern of classics. ;). And I love the other movies on this list too.

Richard Cowgill

Gota do Night Of The Living Dead so you can do Dawn Of The Dead and Day Of The Dead. Ramero's Dead Trilogy

Ken Veader

These are all solid films but I love Hereditary and think it's a bit of a cut above. At release, reviews kept saying it was one of the scariest films of all time. It has scary horror elements but that's not why it's scary, to me. I think you guys will like it.

JayWantsACat

I always confuse the movie fright night with that Michael J Fox movie, The Frighteners!

Terry Lee

All classics but one and yet that one is winning.

Mike Tocci

Boy couldn’t agree more! It’s such a taught, well-directed film. I used to taunt my sister Barb by saying “They’re coming to get you Barbara!”

Michael Soukup

Fright Night (1985) I still watch to this day. Freaks me out.

Rudy Hernandez

Night Of The Living Dead is such a seminal film for American Horror, and a film that is ahead of its time, in so many ways. It is the Rosetta Stone for American Horror—it bridges the Horror genre from the pre-Kennedy Assassination Horror films which are often more banal, to the latter half of the 20th century Horror. The other film I would pair it with is The Last Man On Earth with Vincent Price, because that combination of films creates the blueprint for the modern zombie. The Criterion Collection release from a few years ago is an absolute masterpiece in restoration. *Also want to highlight the Criterion releases for Carnival of Souls and Detour, definitely check those out, especially if you have the Criterion Channel app.

Damiana_Dimock

Rosemarys Baby is a standout here. If you are new to Polanski, this is among his top films...another being the timeless CHINATOWN (1974)

ron clint

I really think there should be pre-2000 and post-2000 polls. "Hereditary" doesn't really stand up to most of the older movies, I have to assume many people voting haven't seen them.

Chris

Hereditary is the only A24 film I like, but the real champs here are Rosemary's Baby and Night of the Living Dead

Bert Taverner

Good choices. Just as an FYI, the 1968 version of "Night of the Living Dead" is public domain. Meaning you could put your entire reaction on Youtube. The 1990 version of "Night of the Living Dead" is good, as well. But the character Barbara becomes the main protagonist, and moves from being scared to being quite capable.

Miles E Coburn

Hereditary was a revolution in modern horror.

Richard Cowgill

Great poll, and I'm very happy to see "Rosemary's Baby" doing so well! That's what got my vote!

Tic Toc Melody

I'd say, just react to every movie on this list eventually. They are all worth seeing. Go in order of votes?

Mr. Writhms

I deeply love Hereditary, but i never ever want to watch it again. That movie scarred my soul. 😅
