Doctor Sleep (2019) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

There's a great Shining-y film called Stir of Echoes with Kevin Bacon.

As a fellow Mike Flanagan fan I highly recommend Ouija: Origin of Evil. It has a lot of Hill House alumni in it too!

Damn, HBO Max doesn't have the director's cut anymore

Jeffrey Miller

for real sheesh. Maybe stick to light hearted comedies next time.

Stoney Soprano

Lighten up, Francis

Patrick Flanagan

Okay fuck stephen king, fuck the director of this movie, fuck a society that wants to consume depictions of a little boy being tortured, disemboweled, terrified and desperate for hours - which, I will remind anyone seeing this, really happens, It was just in the news a grandfather pleaded guilty for TORTURING AND MURDERING his 12 year old grandson, IN COOPERATION WITH OTHER MEMBERS OF HIS FAMILY. I firmly believe we need more empathy in this world, and desensitizing us to suffering - child suffering no less, graphic, prolonged - builds up callouses instead. I'm furious and horrified and want to kick the ass of the director and King for producing this shit for entertainment.

We need to read up on it! -Sam

I think that may have been my favorite scene! Abra had Danny's mannerisms down so well! She was a fantastic actress! There were so beautiful shots in this film too! I'm so glad we watched it! -Sam

Yes, we haven't read the books yet, but I love how Flanagan ties in so much of the first film! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

SO good! -Sam

Ooh good comparison! I love that we've been able to see some amazing sequels on this channel - Termination / Aliens and soon the Godfather Part II! Hahaha I love that you loved those parts! I think that may be the most scared I've been on the channel so far! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Agreed!! Mike Flanagan did a Fantastic job with this film! Congratulations on 1.5 years of sobriety! -Sam

"Seriously, he just tossed that bitch in that box." That's the best line I've heard you say so far. Ha! Lmao.

"So scary I threw my back out and my wife hurt her arm." - put that on the box

The most interesting thing is that this movie is strictly a sequel to the Kubrick movie, not the book. In the book The Shining the hotel was destroyed, so the book version of Dr. Sleep has a completely different ending from the movie, and although Stephen King is sort of famous for not doing well putting together endings to his books, the ending of the book Dr. Sleep is actually far better than the ending of the movie.

It's a minor thing, perhaps, but one of my favourite bits in the movie is when Danny takes over Abra in the car. The actress who plays Abra did a FANTASTIC job of pretending to be Danny. It was subtle but brilliant. I hope we'll be seeing more of her in the future! That and the scene where Rose attempts to go through Abra's mind only to fall into her trap. The shot of her flying chaotically through the air afterwards, going back into herself, and then flying off the top of her RV. God that was shot beautifully. I was very skeptical of this film, having never read the book and thinking that a sequel to The Shining seemed rather exploitative. Boy was I wrong. Another great reaction, guys. Keep up the great work!

Glad you watched the Director's Cut. It's much better and adds a lot more. As you've probably found out, Stanley Kubrick changed a lot from Stephen King's book and King hated it. He then wrote Doctor Sleep in 2013. What this film does is bridge the gap between King's book and Kubrick's film, as it takes elements from both worlds. I don't want to spoil too much of the book in case you want to read it, but the way this film ends is almost identical to the way the Shining book ends, with the hotel burning to the ground.

I am so happy you guys chose to watch this. I saw this in the theaters and was utterly enthralled.

I personally really love this movie, and in my opinion this movie does for the Shining what T2 did for the Terminator, it just takes things to a whole new level. Im glad you watched the directors cut, alot of the most impactful scenes were really cut down in the theatrical version. My 3 favorite parts of your reaction had to be TBR counting the kills in the shoot out, how excited you both were that their going back to the Overlook, and most of all when he looked through the door, I already knew the flashback was coming but Sams scream made me jump at it happening like it was the first time I seen it. lol

I happen to feel Doctor Sleep is an incredible sequel to an amazingly well made classic horror film. Yes, true, The Shining/Stanley Kubrick adaptation took many liberties with the novel and Stephen King was never happy about that. But I feel Mike Flanagan did a tremendous job finding a balance in paying homage to The Shining novel/film as well as adapting Doctor Sleep with such respect. He loved the book as well as the film adaptation of The Shining, and he found a way to juggle it all so beautifully. As a matter of fact I love The Director's Cut more than the theatrical cut. And I thoroughly enjoyed the theatrical when I saw it at the theater for the first time. This adaptation meant a lot to me personally as it dealt with alcoholism in such a real and respectful way so as to not shame those like myself who battles alcoholism and have been sober for a year and six months. Fantastic reaction you guys! Glad you reacted to this movie - And this version!
