The Godfather (1972) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

The Godfather (1972) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

In an early draft for The Godfather Part II, Vito was supposed to throw a cat into the apartment window of Fannuci, so his daughters were too busy trying to restrain the freaked out cat, while Mr Fannuci rushes out the front door, only to eat some lead.

David W.

The baptism murders were the 4 heads of the other families. Victor Stracci killed in the elevator by Clemenza. Cuneo shot in the turnstile door by Willi Chichi (played by Joe Spinell who also played the mobster in the Rocky movies). Phillip Tatalliga shot in bed with a prostitute by Rocco Lampone and some other guy and Barzini shot on the steps by Al Neri dressed as a cop. The other guy was Moe Green who was shot in the eye while getting a massage.

MARK DESANTIS

The person playing Luca Brasi was not supposed to screw up his dialogue but he was nervous about acting in front of Marlon Brando. The cat in the opening was not scripted, it was a cat that was found walking around on set and Marlon Brando picked it up and pet it while shooting that scene and it is what was put in the movie.

The changes to Coda are in the editing and in some music cues. I've seen it and for reasons I won't go into because it would spoil the film, I think it's a much better version. Also, the scene with Michael's confession hasn't been moved to the beginning and the ending hasn't been as altered as all that.

The horse scene is so famous because at the time (1972) it was rare to show anything that graphic and unexpected in a big movie like it at the time.

It's a spoiler for someone who hasn't even seen part 2 yet and has no idea what it (or part 3) is going to contain. The simple point is that it's more of a spoiler than not saying it. Very straightforward. But nothing I can do about it.

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Mitchell, I have not watched Coda but I looked into it and the changes that were made and I seriously doubt it’s a superior cut of the film. For this new director’s cut, Coppola trimmed about 15 minutes out of the movie, including the pivotal final moments. That I really don’t understand. The only change he made I like is he took the scene of Michael’s confession to the priest and put that at the beginning of the film, setting the tone for the rest of the movie. I like that. That works. But the other changes hurt it, in my opinion.

After watching Parts 1 and 2 countless times over the last two decades, I finally sat myself down and watched Part 3 just in this last year. I had seen bits of it on TV before (particularly the ending, oops) but never in its entirety. But when I finally watched it, it was because I wanted to. And I think that is key to enjoying it. Not because it’s new or out of some commitment to finishing the trilogy, but simply because one truly wants to see it, knowing what it is really about and how it’s not truly the third part of the story, but something else altogether. An epilogue. A film about a man in his golden years, trying desperately to atone for his sins.

Nick of Time

I learned recently that The Godfather Part 2 was the first movie sequel to have “Part 2” in the title. Prior to this, movie sequels were always given unique titles, disconnected from that of the previous film. Coppola did this because he really viewed the first two films as one, split into two parts. And this is why he wanted a different title for Part 3, because it’s a different film from the first two. Paramount demanded the title change, thinking it more marketable (and rightly so), but in my opinion it also gave audiences false expectations for what the movie truly was, which in turn is why it’s generally regarded as lowly as it is, I think unfairly. I believe if the studio had allowed Coppola to stick with the original title and just let the film be its own thing it would’ve been better received by both audiences and critics.

Well, when you consider the sizable girth of the man saying to bring the deserts... 😏

Nick of Time

Leave the cannoli?

Jason Dolan

I mean, what else you gonna do at that point? 😂

Nick of Time

That is equal parts fascinating and disgusting. 😆

Nick of Time

I second recommending Taxi Driver, Rocky, and Scarface. I would also add Raging Bull, Lonesome Dove, and Insomnia.

Nick of Time

Love this movie

Cheese, idk if you saw my first reply to you (which I have since deleted), but after some reflection I realized in my defense of how the third film’s original title isn’t a spoiler, I was dangerously close to inadvertently revealing an actual spoiler, so I’m going to approach this a different way. If the original title was itself a spoiler, then it’s a spoiler the director intended. It was only changed because of pressure from the studio, believing “The Godfather Part III” would be a more profitable title, which may be true, but it really doesn’t fit the film as well as “The Death of Michael Corleone” does or would have. (By the way, Coppola recently released a director’s cut of the film, titled “The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone”, so that’s already out there as a “spoiler” to anyone who happens to see that version of the film available somewhere) Coppola wanted the audience to go in knowing we were going to witness Michael’s end, thus why I don’t consider that in itself a spoiler. A spoiler would be revealing how, when, and where Michael meets his fate, or any of the shocking or surprising events along the way.

Nick of Time

Addendum: The above mentioned YouTube videos are full of spoilers. Also, the line I hear most quoted is the one you chuckled at— “Leave the gun, take the cannolis.” Is there a life lesson in that?

Greg Nelson

I really enjoyed your comments as the story unfolded, including all the premature assumptions. It reminded me of my first seeing this classic. By the end you had a pretty good grasp of the key elements. Parts one and two may be the most analyzed and re-analyzed films ever made. You will suddenly find people referring to it’s life lessons in the media, and in conversation. YouTube has all kinds of videos picking apart the motivations of all the characters. I just happened on one asking the question “how did Vito know that Barzini was behind it all along?” Fredo’s character goes center stage in Part 2 and is fascinating to watch being revealed.

Greg Nelson

Furthermore, after you watch Part 2, I would actually recommend waiting a while, a few months maybe, before watching Part 3. Partly because it takes place so much later but also to give yourselves some time to let the first two marinate in your minds before returning to the series for the conclusion.

Nick of Time

Nicholas, can you remove your comment, please? Let's not spoil things unnecessarily.

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Nicholas is right. Don’t think of it as a trilogy. The story is told in the first two and the third is essentially a money grab they did 15 years later. It’s not nearly as bad as some people say, but it’s just not to the level of the other two. You could still react to it to complete the series. Maybe you two will get more out of it since you don’t have the expectations people built up before it.

Jim Barnes

Part 3 certainly isn’t a bad movie by any means, but the whole story is really told in Parts 1 and 2. Part 3, as Coppola intended, is really just an epilogue to the story. Watch it if you want to see where the surviving characters end up. It was originally going to be titled “The Death of Michael Corleone,” which I think would’ve been a better title. That would’ve more allowed it to be it’s own thing instead of having to live up to being “The Godfather Part 3”.

Nick of Time

You guys should watch part 3 since you haven't seen it before, but I advise you to go in with low expectations. The first two movies are two of the greatest films of the 20th century. The third film, even with better writing, editing and casting, would have had an uphill battle regardless. That said, I haven't seen the Godfather Coda, which is a director's cut of the third film. Maybe it makes for a better film.

Mitchell Smilie

Can't wait for part two!

J.C.

Great reaction. Can't wait for you guys to do part II. Speaking as someone that was there opening night Christmas 1990 for part III I would tell you that you can skip it. III isn't terrible but it's not anywhere near as good as I&II and you aren't missing out on anything.

Joseph Tamburo

That was a great reaction, guys. Such a dense movie, with lots of moving pieces, and I thought you guys followed along brilliantly. That was a lot of fun! I must admit that, even though I've seen this a gazillion times, I still have a sliver of hope, each time I watch it, that maybe Apollonia won't decide to surprise Michael by driving this time. Alas, to no avail. Gosh I hate seeing her go. Anyhow, yes, part 2 is an absolute must! Part 3 is a mixed bag... some good, some not-so-good... but I do think it's worth watching eventually.

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

It never hurts to ask. - Tessio

Jason Dolan

Movie fact: The horse head in that famous scene was REAL. The production got it from a dog food processing plant. In those days, horse meat was used to make dog food.

Mr. Writhms

The Godfather Part 2 is seen as a better film. But The Godfather, in my opinion, is more enjoyable, more rewatchable, and definitely more iconic. So many things that keep getting referenced in pop culture to this day. This film did a great job of romanticizing and glamourizing the mob life. Part 2 is much different, that's as much as I can say without spoiling. Hope you get to it soon!

Shehab Dawoud

This was clutch. Exactly what I needed for the holiday.

Jason Dolan

If you guys want to see some all time classics from the 2nd half of the 20th century just watch the great films starring the main actors from The Godfather Saga. Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, John Cazale, Talia Shire and Robert DeNiro (Part II) have all been in some of the best films of all time. Pacino and DeNiro alone have been in so many classics that are all worth watching for the channel. Here's a brief list of just a few great films with the stars of The Godfather movies: On The Waterfront (Brando), Scarface, Carlito's Way, And Justice For All (Pacino), Brian's Song (Caan), Network (Duvall), Dog Day Afternoon (Cazale), Rocky (Shire) and Taxi Driver, Casino, The King of Comedy (DeNiro). There are plenty more with these great actors too.
