TBR said that he can't believe people sleeping through the rain. I once slept through a rocket attack.

you finally see the Vietnam trilogy. Platoon shows the duality of the war because back in the U.S it became very controversial and it was dude to cuz of scenes like the village scene war crimes and atrocities where committed. From what we can tell on the surface of Barnes was he was like Taylor at one point but after hes years fighting he became a former shell of whoever he was. Whoever Barnes was then was gone forever. We hardly see him smile or express any kind of emotion other anger, or hate or just plain cold. Barnes want to win the war and he's willing to go far to do so, Elias want to keep hes humanity which is why we see him in a kind of light. In the conversation Elias and Taylor have looking at the stars Elias says it clearly in why he has hated for Elias it wast as Elias says "Barnes believe in what he is doing" its due to this why Barnes want to ride of Elias is cuz Barnes sees him as a weakness that's bring down his platoon. Barnes states it himself he doesn't mind a man as long he follows orders. He feels hes come out ahead of the reality of hardships and pain cuz what do they know cuz they go to their bunker and smoke marijuana and Barnes says he doesn't need such things to escape reality instead reviles in it. Barnes is cynical he believes that men need to be brutal and merciless to win a war rather than mercy and compassion.

Platoon is my favorite Vietnam film. My dad and some others I've known were in the service during Nam and they say that Platoon captured the feel of the times for soldiers. Oliver Stone was in the Army during the war too and was the recipient of a number of medals and awards. He had a definite point of view that permeated Platoon and made it feel real for a lot of the guys who came back from over there. Check out some of Oliver Stone's other films, there's always plenty to react to and talk about with his stuff. I recommend Natural Born Killers or Any Given Sunday as the next Stone movie, but U-Turn and Wall Street are also great watches. He also wrote but didn't direct classics like Scarface (with Al Pacino), Midnight Express and Conan The Barbarian; again all legendary movies. His films are always supercharged with ideas and even if you don't agree with him there's still much to dissect and think about in each of his films. Each one also has their own great performances from a host of eclectic actors so that there's always someone familiar in there too. His writing is captivating and his direction stands out. He's one of the few directors that can really be respected for writing his own material and really being committed to each project he undertakes, making sure he knows of what he speaks and writes so that each of his movies ring true and actually mean something.

This is one of my all time fave films. Its always a tough watch but just appreciate the story being told, the filmmaking, and the acting.

Did you notice that the Captain is Dale Dye who played Colonel Sink in Band of Brothers?

Sean Clonch

Good Morning Vietnam is a comedy with Robin Williams where he is a DJ entertaining the US soldiers during the Vietnam War. Love to see you react to this warm, funny, classic movie and it is a comedy movie! Could we add this to the comedy polls?

Jeff

My brother, who fought in Vietnam, told me the final battle scene was very realistic. He said that he had that experience as a position that they were holding was overrun like that in an all night battle.

Michael Rhine

Didn't see this mentioned yet but the writer director Oliver Stone was a Vietnam Vet and wrote this based on his time there. I think the village massacre is based on the infamous Mi Lai massacre.

When Willem Dafoe is running through the jungle alone, ambushing fire teams as he goes, he lets out this animalistic roar... as if he's temporarily changed into something else... and it gives me chills every single time I watch this. God damn he's good.

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Now that you've seen Platoon... there's a joke in "The Naked Gun" you might want to revisit. It's the music montage where Frank and Jane are going on dates shown here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ux8KLx1veDs

Speaking of the camera work, the DP for this movie has shot every one of Quentin Tarantino's films since KILL BILL - Platoon won 4/8 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Editing and Best Sound - it was nominated for cinematography but lost to THE MISSION - interestingly this came out the same year as ALIENS that was also about a group of marines who get wiped out, that also had infighting - and also TOP GUN came out this year, another intense war movie

Fun fact, the guy who stabbed himself was the lead singer of the 80s band LIVING COLOR who had the hit song CULT OF PERSONALITY

Sam: "What just happened?" Vietnam. That's what happened. Pure madness.

Jason Dolan

Oh I am hyped for PLATOON. Can't wait to watch this one with you guys.
