Cody Rhodes was pitched heel turn

Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer reported that at one point, Cody Rhodes was pitched for a heel turn to align with Rock against John Cena heading in to WrestleMania. There were a number of other elements regarding a timeline, when the turn was expected and the like that we can’t confirm, however, Fightful Select had heard earlier this week that Cody was pitched and passed on a heel turn.

To be clear, the only element of the report we can confirm is the pitched and rejected heel turn. After that, we’re told that Cena was pitched to and agreed to the heel turn, and The Rock was “all in” on making the story happen.

There are a lot of dramatic reactions to this online, but we’re told this was just the common course of making pitches for something big to happen heading in to WrestleMania, and maximizing the buzz. When gauging reactions this week,

There were many close to Cody who hadn’t even heard about this.

John Cena vs. Cody Rhodes has been planned for WrestleMania as far back as November.

Boring????

Collin Ingram

No. He went to a place that made him their number 1 star, lots of money, a bus, and where he wanted to make his childhood dream come true. Believe it or not, people try to better their situation without malice.

John Thee Punisher

He'll never turn.

Gina

Cody turning made little sense at the moment. Cody turning 6 months from now after being screwed over & over again? Yes. That makes more sense storyline wise

Keith K

Oh he definitely fed into that too. Teasing going down the heel tunnel, having some heelish reactions to near falls, etc. He earned those boos

Josh Howard

No it wouldn't.

Keith Robinson

To soon? He's been the same boring ass character for the past 6 years. The fans in AEW were begging him to turn heel, and instead, he just gave us the middle finger and went to WWE.

Raymond Slover

Honestly I’m glad it happened the way it did, the Cena turn will be remembered much longer

Wulf

The most obvious reason, IMO, for Cody turning it down is the financial aspect: Merch sales would drop a fair amount. If/when Cody turns, it has to be about him, not somebody else like The Rock.

Lynchman

WAYYYY too early for him to turn heel.
