Fightful had the opportunity to speak with Gabe Kidd of New Japan Pro Wrestling. The Bullet Club War Dogs member spoke with Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp. They discussed his recent backstage controversy involving AEW’s Kenny Omega and more.
The interview begins with Sean promoting the upcoming December PPV NJPW Strong Style Evolved. Gabe cuts Sean off and says, “You booked up some of my time to talk about [Ryohei] Oiwa. Come on, you said it yourself; you reached out to me for a reason. You know what we need to talk about, so let's talk about it. I’m not thinking about Oiwa right now; everyone knows what I am thinking about.”
Sean is amused and brings up Kidd’s backstage incident with Kenny Omega from last week's NJPW Power Struggle event in Osaka, Japan. Sean mentions that a member of the Japanese press contacted him and said they could not run the video, but Sean could, so they sent it to him. Kidd says that a “little snitch” gave Sean the video.
Kidd says he was trying to talk to Omega off-camera and adds that the only reason the press was there was because they had just interviewed him. He noted that he knew where Omega would be after he was done with his interviews.
The NJPW STRONG Openweight Champion said he had never met Omega before and that he would talk to him. Kidd said he mentioned his name once when he was drunk on Twitter and that Kenny wrote back to him. Kidd says the tweet from Kenny said, “Maybe if you’re lucky and win the G1. I’ll bless you with the Kenny Omega touch.”
Gabe would then state, “You think I give a fuck about you geez? I was just saying it because I know there are some people that would love to watch me batter you [Omega]. I wasn’t trying to do anything. I told him before anything, before pro wrestling, before anything, I’m a man.
“I don’t mess around with this pro wrestling stuff. You mess up my name intentionally -- All these guys, like MJF and Kenny, think they’re acting so cool when they get my name wrong when they obviously know it, and they’re just trying to act cool in front of another bunch of uncool people, which are their fans. It’s just funny to me.” Gabe said.
Kidd mentioned Omega called him Greg Kidd last week and said Kenny acted like he didn’t know who he was, which made him look dumb since he had previously responded to him.
Sean asked how Omega’s demeanor was when he approached him. Kidd said Omega was calmer than he was.
Kidd tells Sean, “I don’t know if he’s heard stories or spoke to people about me. I don’t fuck around. I don’t fuck around with people trying to disrespect me. We’re supposed to collaborate with AEW. What kind of collaboration is that? When they just bring their guys over for our big stuff, and we go over there for fucking Ring of Honor. Are you mad? I’m a fucking famous wrestler. I did Ring of Honor, and I beat two people.” (Note: Kidd wrestled Anthony Henry on the 10/3 edition of ROH Club and Angelico on the 11/7 edition of ROH Club)
Sean would ask if the rumors were true that the crowd at the recent ROH taping that he worked on was chanting Omega’s name. Kidd said, “Yeah. The whole crowd was chanting it, and he was not in the building. He came back to New Japan before he came back to his workplace. How does that work out? He said, ‘New Japan is where the best wrestling is. New Japan is number one.’ He said that. First of all, he’s lying to all these people that are backing him. What kind of role model is that? Little idiot.”
Kidd added that Omega was unprofessional and that Kenny went to the press after that altercation.
Kidd discussed some of the things that become news in wrestling, including AEW Brawl Out and Brawl In, “All these things that have become news in wrestling, AEW Brawl Out, Brawl In, that is the most pussy shit I’ve ever seen in my life.”
“They advertise on national TV, and they thought it would be a good idea to show this fight; this talked about [the] backstage fight with CM Punk and Jack Perry, and it was a push and front choke for two seconds. You are all pussies. If you want to be in a collaboration, that’s fine, but I’ll come to Japan, and I’ll slap the shit out of any of you. Especially that knobhead, talking about me being unprofessional.”.
Sean asked if Gabe had any regrets about how everything had unfolded. Kidd said, “None at all.” Sean would then ask if he would do a match with Omega. Kidd said Omega should turn up, make the match, and they would sell out the Tokyo Dome.
When asked if he believes Omega wanted this reaction. “I don’t care what he thought of it. I said it before: I don’t know this guy. I never met this guy in my life. I just went up to him to tell him straight up, don’t be saying that shit if you don’t know me. I don’t know you like that.” Kidd said.
“Don’t start saying this shit and acting like you don’t know me, trying to little league me. I am one of the best in the world. Don’t play with me. Whatever happened happened. I don’t give a fuck what he thinks or how he reacted to the situation. He got slapped and taken down. That’s it. He can sit in his big house and be sad about it.” Kidd said.
When asked if he and Omega have interacted with each other since the backstage incident, Kidd said no, but he did say that New Japan fined him. He added that they were pissed because Omega was not cleared. Kidd said the fine was half of his G1 money and added they talked to him about professionalism. Kidd said he told New Japan, “You need to talk to the fucking partner company [AEW] about professionalism. You need to talk about Kenny coming back to New Japan before AEW.”
Kidd told Sean that he had no idea that he was being filmed during the altercation with Omega.
He would tell Sean, “The right thing for him [Kenny] to do is be a fucking professional. The right thing for him to do is to realize, ‘I’ve had a great career. It’s been fun times, but it’s time for the next guy. I will sacrifice my body.’ He should sacrifice himself in this match and realize he is not the Kenny Omega he once was.”
Kidd said people see Omega as a God but noted he would treat him like a peasant. He added that fans would instead see him [Kidd] as a God, and New Japan would regain its top spot as the world's number one pro wrestling company.
In closing, Sean asked how he would feel if Omega showed up at one of the NJPW shows. Kidd said, “I don’t give a shit.” He said some fans don’t want him to wrestle Omega, “You can’t give [him] Kenny Omega, Gabe; he’ll hurt him. Just like he hurt Eddie Kingston and this guy and this guy.’ I don’t give a shit. This is pro wrestling. What the fuck do you expect? We’re throwing each other through tables, off ladders, off cages. People get hurt. I’m happy to be the one doing it.”
“I don’t give a fuck how many people I’ve hurt. People turning down bookings against me because they don’t want to get in the ring with me. Good. None of you should want to get in the ring with me.” Kidd added.
