Bryan Danielson Update After AEW WrestleDream

Bryan Danielson’s full-time run has reached its end, and we’ve learned more about the last few months of his career.

Danielson lost to Jon Moxley at AEW WrestleDream and his full-time career is effectively over. It was indicated to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful that Danielson specifically wanted to lose to Moxley to end that run.

As highlighted on Fightful Select, AEW doctors legitimately didn’t allow Bryan Danielson to be involved with Blood and Guts, though it was something the company was hoping could happen throughout the year. However, Danielson was cleared to compete in regular matches along his road to full-time retirement. Although many people wondered if his interviews were in character regarding his health status, we’re told that those were all true, and by the time the Moxley match was unfolding, Danielson even had thought he probably shouldn’t have done a couple of those matches leading up to the WrestleDream PPV.

Danielson has legitimately been without a talent contract for a number of months, and we’re told that he does not have any additional contracts. He is effectively a free agent without additional obligations. He’s told many in interviews and backstage that he doesn’t envision going back to WWE at this time. The hope within AEW is that he’ll wrestle periodically for them and resume additional duties whenever he’s ready. Danielson told Fightful that he has to get his neck fixed first, which likely means surgery.

Danielson’s match at AEW All In had been planned since earlier this year, complete with Danielson winning the title. We’re told that Chris Hero produced the All In main event, and Swerve Strickland was adamant he wanted to tap out to lose to Danielson as opposed to “passing out” or anything else. Since virtually the start of Swerve’s reign it was known that Danielson would likely be the one to end it.

We wish Bryan Danielson well in his full-time retirement.

Mad respect to Swerve, he really wanted to put Bryan over crazy strong.

If he does return, I think it will be in AEW. They give him creative freedom and he could do occasional bouts in Mexico and New Japan.

There's no rule that you have to send people home happy. That's a WWE-created thing - hasn't always been like that. Cliffhangers like that are great.

I'm perfectly happy with Danielson going out the way he wanted. That's how it should be.

The story is not over and it was his call

Fightful Select

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's not right. Like I think WWE product is pretty paint by the numbers Bruce Pritchard ass tactic and what happened last night was for me. Emotional and un-wwe-disney like.

I have no doubt Brian wanted to be stretchered out. He seems to love playing the injury angle. Not saying I liked it, but they let Brian have what he wanted. I thought it was a very ick ending and sent the crowd home depressed.

The old school way is to go out on your back, which is what he did. TK and the Bucks had to force Sting to win his last match

Raphael Soohoo

Would love to see him wrestle one more time in WWE but I know he’s a Vince guy so that might not be in the cards.

Wrestling periodically? Danielson has reached legend status. Heal up!

Alexander Fitzgerald

It’s a very popular opinion trust me, and I agree.

It's still too soon.

Hell of a career. What way to go out.

Tucker

Thanks for everything bryan

Steve Gargus

Also it's not end of his career, just his full time in-ring career

TriSarahTops

One of the all-time greats and a true class act. Thanks for the memories.

Moxleytron must be stopped... no matter the cost...

Raphael Soohoo

Surreal. The greatest to ever do it.

Andrew Bates

Wrote his ass off death of Optimus prime style

SlickJonny

Unpopular opinion but I personally thought the shock ending was great. The way it was filmed with everyone looking upset, Excalibur sounded like he was crying on commentary. They played this like everyone genuinely was upset about this being the end and how Moxley could do something like this. All I'm thinking about now is how big that return pop will be next year when he's all fixed up and feeling better. That will be the pay off to this uneasy finish. I think everyone expects an AEW PPV to be the end of everything rather than end on a progression of stories. That's what this was. Phenomenal PPV.

I'm heartbroken damnit

HIm being murdered is pretty much the most Danielson way to end his career ever. He's beyond earned the rest.

Insomnia Inc

I hope he can become healthy enough to have a true final retirement match in AEW.
