I wasn't happy with the way the Mulan sketch went, so I threw this together. I've been playing some Far Cry 5. It's my first Far Cry game. I'm liking it. Mostly. The combat is much more satisfying than in Fallout 4, BUT Fallout 4 actually had a fun system of scavenging junk which you used for just about everything. If I knew I needed screws, I'd go out of my way to pick up old fans and globes and toy race cars. In Far Cry 5, it's just ammo and cash, and both are plentiful so there's no real sense of being a scavenger trying to survive.
My two favorite things about the game might be its least hyped selling points. One, the music. The music is amazing, I can't believe it.
The other thing is Jess Black. I'm not the sort of person who can say the word "waifu" without immediately hating myself, but Jess Black is 10/10 waifu material. She's edgy, badass, funny, sadistic, and she's got a sexy Southern accent. She is hands down my favorite part of the game, and as far as I'm concerned, Far Cry 5 should just be called "Jess Black: The Game."
I wish there was more to her. Other than the mission where you get her as a companion, you don't really get to learn more about her. She doesn't have her own arch, and she doesn't grow with the story. She's Dutch's niece (an important NPC), but there isn't much interaction there. I bring her on every side-quest just for those juicy bits of fun dialogue.
Far Cry 5 feels a little empty of that reason. As detailed as the world is, as compelling as the set up is, and as fun as the characters are, it never goes balls-deep. It just teases you with the tip. You meet amazing characters and . . . That's it. You met them. End of story. That's not good enough for me. I'd like another layer.
