Timothy Thatcher Talks Being A Wrestling Journalist, NXT, WWE, Fight Pit
Added 2023-10-29 16:51:19 +0000 UTCTimothy Thatcher joined Fightful’s Wrestling Perspective Podcast for an exclusive interview. He spoke to Dennis Farrell and Lars Frederiksen on various topics, including his time in NXT and some of the people he would still like to face at some point. This exclusive interview will be available on Monday, October 30th, at 9:00 AM.
Thatcher was asked about his history in media before becoming a professional wrestler. Thatcher said he began writing with a small newspaper in the Bay area and said the first article he wrote was when he covered a Pro Wrestling Iron and Pro Wrestling Noah
event, which coincidentally was where he went to High School.
He said that when writing about pro wrestling, he did not want to be a pro wrestler. Thatcher said that after he met JD Bishop, he asked if they would need any help with things. Thatcher said he wasn’t making any money and wanted to do what he could to get into events for free.
Thatcher said they had him help set up the ring; then he would also move on to be a referee and eventually to wrestling.
The former EVOLVE Champion spoke about his time in NXT and working with William Regal. Thatcher said Regal was very nice to him at his first tryout with the company. He said they stayed in contact throughout the years. Timothy said that Regal shared more knowledge than he thought he deserved.
Thatcher said regarding his experience in NXT, “NXT is a television show, right? They have certain ideas for people at one point, and those ideas change.” He would add that it is just like any other form of entertainment.” Thatcher said he is very grateful for his time in NXT because he got there right before COVID-19 hit.
Thatcher added that if he were not in the WWE during COVID, he would have been in very bad shape [financially]. He said he went to the WWE at the end when they were no longer looking for Independent talent and were going into getting athletes.
Thatcher says he did not have the “look” for what they were going for in NXT 2.0. Thatcher said they were nice enough to keep me on as a coach. He mentioned that he was Norman Smiley’s assistant coach for his last six months in the WWE. Thatcher said, “There are still people in the WWE who are there that were looking out for me.”
He mentioned the day that he got let go from the WWE, he went out with good company and talked about leaving the same day Samoa Joe, William Regal, and Hideki Suzuki. He said if he had to go, that was the crew to go out with.
He said he is focused on Pro Wrestling Noah and is enjoying his time there. Suzuki asked if he wanted to go there with him, and he said absolutely 100%. Thatcher also noted that he liked that he could wrestle in the Indies and would like to return to Europe soon to wrestle.
Thatcher would talk about his NXT Fight Pit. He said they recorded the match at 10:30 AM; he said it was bizarre wrestling in front of those who were training in the Performance Center instead of fans. Timothy said he will always be undefeated in Fight Pit matches because he doesn’t think he will have another one.
He spoke about his upcoming match against Chris Hero on November 17th in West Coast Pro. Thatcher says that Chris Hero has been gone for three years, but when he returns, he will be just as good.
When asked what kind of wrestling he is into and watches, Thatcher said he has been watching a lot of The Sheepherders [WWE Hall of Famer’s The Buschwackers].
Thatcher says that he would like to have another go against GUNTHER. He also mentioned that he is thankful he had the opportunity to face Bryan Danielson. He added that he’d fought Wheeler Yuta but now wants to face Claudio Castagnoli and, hopefully, Jon Moxley. Thatcher also said that Danielson is probably the best he’s ever been in the ring with, in his opinion.
