CM Punk: What talent & creative have been told in WWE, is he going?
Added 2023-10-06 21:42:29 +0000 UTCCM Punk is the talk of the town once again, as virtually every outlet has reported what they've heard regarding he and WWE.
Roll call. We're here.
WWE feels confident that CM Punk would come to WWE.
CM Punk’s termination from AEW led to questions about his future, including the possibility of a return to WWE. We’ve learned of what some within WWE think. WWE higher ups fully believe that CM Punk would sign with the company if they had interest. In the past year, we’ve heard that Punk had been open to the idea. But WWE sources think the ball is in their court.
As of two weeks ago, nobody within WWE had indicated that CM Punk and the company had talks. In late September, we were told that it appeared there were feelers out from Punk to WWE to see if there was any interest there. One WWE employee as of last month advised someone close to Punk that talking to Vince McMahon directly would have been the best courses of action to secure a return to the company. In the past, we're told Vince McMahon was adamant to Fox that he wasn't interested in bringing Punk back, though Fox had been pushing for it before he went to AEW.
Multiple sources we spoke to near Punk believe would in fact sign with WWE.
There is still a ton of heat on CM Punk in WWE, with plenty of it stemming from his last run almost ten years ago. Sources familiar with the situation believe that many of them would be consulted in the event Punk would return to WWE, as to prevent anything similar to what happened multiple times in All Elite Wrestling.
One top star said that Punk knows "he wouldn't be able to pull any of his shit here. There's nobody here he could jump without getting his ass handed to him." When we brought up that WWE would likely want to talk to top talent about Punk coming in, that same person said the talk really needed to be with Punk. Another top talent said that they believe Triple H wouldn't risk the negativity that Punk would bring, but then did recall that it wouldn't be the first time that he's brought someone in with baggage since being in control. The general feeling we got was that Punk would need to make good with a number of influential talent in general.
Within AEW, one top star said that before Brawl Out happened, Punk would still verbalize how much he didn't like WWE, Triple H and Vince McMahon, and would be surprised if he went back there. Another that now he's in a "much less forgiving situation from a career perspective."
We've spoken to several top stars within WWE, and a number of names in creative. To be clear, thus far nobody has been told anything on the talent or creative end about Punk coming back to WWE. When we asked about the teases that pick up steam on social media, the claim adamantly that those were not meant to tease a CM Punk return, though it's not impossible they could be played off of in the future to generate buzz. In the day since publication, that's harder to believe. We spoke to various people in the know regarding future plans, and almost nobody has been clued in on a potential Punk return. One source in creative said that there are enough CM Punk promos and interviews that anything could be stretched into a CM Punk reference.
Sources that are close with Punk have been open about his interest in returning to WWE, with one outright saying that if there was WWE interest, he would go back to the company. There was also a source that said they believed that it was actively being worked on. There is a very big elephant in the room in that both Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns have verbalized in the past that they aren't fond of Punk. Most people on both sides believe there would need to be fences mended there in order to make a successful return happen.
One WWE source was steadfast in their belief that when Punk appeared at WWE Raw backstage earlier this year, he was looking to get his job back. Based on how that experience went, they aren't of the belief it's in the cards. Others we spoke to thought him appearing there was more to create allies, as there had already been some bumps in the road towards his eventual AEW return.
Another discussion has been about the workload. Punk took great pride in being at work every week within AEW, and his salary was above what a lot of stars high up on the WWE card are making to work full-time as well. WWE sources we spoke to felt like Punk's leverage isn't what it was four months, 14 months or three years ago as a result, and that could play a big factor in negotiations regarding schedule and pay if he does come back.
In case you wondered, it seems like the IMPACT locker room would be in favor of him appearing there, as he made a good impression visiting backstage months ago. That's highly unlikely, but still an option.
We reached out to CM Punk and did not hear back.
The TL:DR -- nobody in WWE has been told that a return is happening, and most top talent are opposed to it. However, they don't feel it's an impossibility, and both those close to Punk and WWE believe Punk would do it, but there are fences to mend.

"When it comes to doing business in whatever industry you're in you put aside personal issues." Yeah, no. In any business I've been in, if a coworker takes a swing at you, you're getting canned. Period. End of sentence.

2023-10-07 01:35:46 +0000 UTCWhen it comes to doing business in whatever industry you're in you put aside personal issues. It's just business. Which is why what happened in AEW was so ridiculous. If Punk will put personal issues aside then so will WWE if they believe it can make them money. Predicting we hear Living Colour at the Rumble. I'm no Punk fan, but it would some damn good TV.

2023-10-06 23:56:29 +0000 UTCSo all of that to basically get to LOL no. I personally felt like Nick Khan was giving a pre-emptive future endeavors to Punk the day of the merger.

2023-10-06 23:49:58 +0000 UTCWhat money? Are they getting a bonus for it?

2023-10-06 23:46:20 +0000 UTCAEW just signing away Edge increases the odds of WWE putting aside the past and bringing Punk back IMO.

2023-10-06 23:17:48 +0000 UTCEven if he goes back there like he's gone back to places before. Just best of luck to him and the WWE and the wrestling community.

2023-10-06 23:03:44 +0000 UTCI see Rollins and Reigns as the two who will put their feelings aside to make money. Similar to Rollins/Riddle. Do what’s best to make money and be professional. I think Punk mending fences with Miz was good but there’s clearly a lot more to do back there. But similar to Edge going to AEW, I’ll have to actually see it to believe it.

2023-10-06 22:57:56 +0000 UTCI think he would need to go through Vince. He always said Vince wasn’t the main problem it was Triple H. But then again he has made other comments about Vince and the company since. I think he will have to apologize to several people and will be on a very short leash. And still probably won’t main event Mania.

2023-10-06 22:55:12 +0000 UTC@joseph cloud - Bingo. The WWE is filled with different types of athletes. I'm not knocking the guys from PWG. If someone likes that, cool. But there is a HUGE difference between the Jackson brothers' friends and WWE having a direct line to college & pro athletes. I feel like Punk would get Edge's post-Rumble treatment. He'll main event part of Mania, but he's not beating Roman or Cody.

2023-10-06 22:51:29 +0000 UTCTony Khan has this unique ability to go, "Here are the combustible elements. How can I possibly make this situation worse?" I'll always say the entire problem was avoidable and ultimately his fault.

2023-10-06 22:47:08 +0000 UTCIt’s wild that anyone thinks cm punk could pull the alleged stuff that got him fired. Whatever you think of either company, so many WWE Superstars came through the NFL or legit combat sports. And he’s be a B+ guy in WWE, not the guy who gets his own show.

2023-10-06 22:36:26 +0000 UTCAgreed. At the time when they kept on shoving Roman, this did damage however youd also understand Punk’s point at that moment on how WWE was

2023-10-06 22:36:25 +0000 UTCI think they've all watched Punk getting destroyed in his failed MMA "career".
John Horton
2023-10-06 22:34:56 +0000 UTCAlso I think he would have limited schedule and not come every week so the salary would be negotiable there.
Utkarsh Vivek
2023-10-06 22:34:02 +0000 UTCThere’s way too much smoke to this for there to be no fire. I’m 80/20 leaning towards him showing up at Survivor Series.
Edjr13
2023-10-06 22:34:01 +0000 UTCPunk was literally running Collision. AEW bent over backwards to accommodate him by banning people he didn't like from the show and he still just couldn't help himself from getting into a fight.
John Horton
2023-10-06 22:33:34 +0000 UTCGreat insight from both sides. This morning I was confident he’d come back to WWE. Now I feel more 50/50. Hope everyone involved can mend fences and do business. Ironic we are in the same situation as we were in AEW.
Edgar M.
2023-10-06 22:31:23 +0000 UTCI wonder how much Punk hates AEW now and wants to prove he is a professional that he is willing to mend fences and apologise. I mean people have gone back and forth but given how he is that he is willing to die on every hill, i am very sure he will approach everyone with Mindy’s muffin and mend it.
Utkarsh Vivek
2023-10-06 22:29:56 +0000 UTCNot if he turns heel afterwards. He's better as a heel anyway since he seems to be genuinely a dick who can't get along with anyone.

2023-10-06 22:27:06 +0000 UTCGood stuff here. Most are reporting his return as fact. Basically, it seems like he needs to sit down and apologize to a lot of people to come back. He may or may not do that because he does have a gigantic ego and serious anger management issues.
John Horton
2023-10-06 22:27:02 +0000 UTCHe is going back. Think the situation may he what Ibou and Sean have where WWE wants Punk to talk to the roaster, sign non disparagement contracts, secure all interests to WWE and then make him return. Wrestlepurists laid it out perfectly with scoops similar to the one above with the only difference being WWE and Punk are closer tk getting it done and that everyone in roaster whom they want Punk to talk to is willing.
Utkarsh Vivek
2023-10-06 22:26:12 +0000 UTCI mean it’s not like they get a % of the gate or anything. Unless Wwe starts giving out bonuses or restructuring contracts what money are they going to see from this?

2023-10-06 22:18:58 +0000 UTCHe is the walking definition of live long enough to see yourself become the villain. Dude used to try and convince you he was about something. What a joke if he grovels back to Vince after everything that has happened. Kayfabe or not, dude is a cancer.

2023-10-06 22:10:47 +0000 UTCYeah because any mistake CM Punk had done is anywhere close to what Edge, John Cena, Stone Cold, Brock, Rock, HBK, Ric Flair, etc mistakes Foh 😂 why do we treat this man like he’s the devil I’ll never understand it 😂

2023-10-06 22:05:20 +0000 UTC😆 🤣 if Punk couldn't mend fences with people in AEW what makes yall think he can mend fences with people he has had issues with for 10 years? Punk isn't going back, this is just talk and that's it let it go Punk marks

2023-10-06 22:01:17 +0000 UTCIf / When Punk comes back, strictly looking at money, there's no way he gets a salary like Lesnar or Roman. He'll make substantially less money than he had in AEW, but Tony Khan overpays everyone. Punk isn't going to get into fist fights in WWE, and not because he's scared of anyone. But simply because the inmates don't run the asylum. You think a guy like Paul Heyman can't bridge the gap between Punk & Roman? Just my experiences...Sometimes the best way to make a deal happen isn't to say "this is what I'm going to do for you." Sometimes, it's saying, "here's what I promise is NOT going to happen."

2023-10-06 22:00:28 +0000 UTCAll for forgiveness and giving people a chance to right any wrongs they may have caused in their lives. That said, seeing him back there given all that has transpired since he left, would be so very weird. Professional wrestling, baby!
Bruce Pettit
2023-10-06 22:00:01 +0000 UTCSounds like he would upset some people inevitably over at WWE too. Some important figures, even if they were talked to, are still on the fence and skeptical. I think the domino effect would be someone else leaves for AEW when their contract is up in 2024.

2023-10-06 21:59:44 +0000 UTC2022 and 2023 have been the wildest years ever when it comes to wrestling, and I've been watching since 1998.

2023-10-06 21:54:49 +0000 UTCI feel it somewhat undermines the Punk onscreen persona if he goes crawling back to WWE after everything that’s happened. It would require top notch creative and character work for him to come out of it with an enhanced reputation.

2023-10-06 21:49:58 +0000 UTCTo be objective and fair, “You gotta make Roman look strong” ABSOLUTELY did damage to Roman for years. It was a protest phrase sang in unison for years when Reigns got pushed. Absolutely that would need to be fixed, I would be angry about it as well.
