Top AEW program was always in the plans
Added 2023-09-16 19:59:01 +0000 UTCThe CM Punk situation changed a lot of plans in AEW, but not one major program.
CM Punk’s fight with Jack Perry and subsequent termination surrounded a CM Punk vs. Samoa Joe match for the Real World’s Championship. Fightful Select reported that the original plans for Punk involved Ricky Starks for the AEW Real Worlds Championship.
However, Samoa Joe’s plans were already in place as well. We’re told that despite CM Punk still having the Real World’s Championship, there were not immediate plans for an MJF/Punk program. Instead, Samoa Joe had previously been planned to feud with MJF as is the case on television now.
EDIT: Apologies for the paragraph cutting off. We've reached out to Patreon who said they are addressing the issue of this happening of late.

its okay buddy, it happens

2023-09-18 03:30:08 +0000 UTCWanting a title shot after being forced to vacate is one thing. Carrying around a fake belt and proclaiming yourself the "real world champion" is another. Especially since Punk was supposed to be a face. Even though he was booed more than cheered outside of Chicago because of shit like this.

2023-09-17 01:06:20 +0000 UTCI think the idea was that he technically never lost it, which is a relatively common story in pro wrestling when a champion is injured and forced to vacate the belt. I wouldn't be surprised if Thunder Rosa comes back wanting a title shot since she technically, much like Punk, never lost the belt.

2023-09-17 01:03:35 +0000 UTCThere's no unification. It was never a real belt.

2023-09-16 22:32:12 +0000 UTCI hated that "real world's championship" crap. Fake vanity belt for CM Punk, which I'm sure was his idea.

2023-09-16 22:30:35 +0000 UTC"Fightful Select reported that the original plans" The original plans what? Edit: Thank you for fixing the post, but no need to apologize. I should be sorry for not understanding this was a Patreon issue. I'll try to remember that in the future.

2023-09-16 22:24:35 +0000 UTCThat all pretty much makes sense. Punk would have done the strap match with Starks and then he could have done any number of things afterwards to stay busy for an eventual run with MJF.

2023-09-16 22:22:15 +0000 UTCIt kind of sounds like we might not have got a full MJF and CM Punk feud and match anyway?

2023-09-16 20:47:47 +0000 UTCWhy? Most stuff hasn't made sense last 2 or 3 months.

2023-09-16 20:19:51 +0000 UTCJoe shoved MJF at All Out, not All In- so after Punk was fired. Easy to mix up though
Kevin Killavey
2023-09-16 20:18:33 +0000 UTCJoe did push MJF before the match I see it there. It’s entirely possible they didn’t think about when they were going to unify the titles or even if they would
Conor McNamara
2023-09-16 20:12:24 +0000 UTCThey set it up before Punk was fired so this makes sense. Joe shoved MJF when he was entering the ring for his match with Punk.

2023-09-16 20:09:16 +0000 UTCMaybe, though I think it’s possible Max just didn’t have much interest of working with the guy. He didn’t engage at all with the angle Punk tried to build on Collision.

2023-09-16 20:08:00 +0000 UTCYeah not buying this. There is zero logic behind joe losing then being thrown immediately into a title program with mjf
Mike Dudzinski
2023-09-16 20:07:13 +0000 UTCSounds like they were probably gonna wait out until the "2024 contract" stuff with MJF happened to do the unification
Justin Reid
2023-09-16 20:03:35 +0000 UTCSo it would have been a slow build for a “unification” match ?
Rene marquez
2023-09-16 20:01:35 +0000 UTCSo what was the logic in Joe losing to Punk but going after MJF? Was it so Joe could beat MJF, then Punk come: and says he beat Joe, so he’s owed a match?
