GUNTHER talks about his Intercontinental title reign, always wanting a singles match, and more

Fightful Select caught up with WWE Intercontinental Champion GUNTHER in Detroit, Michigan, for SummerSlam Media Day. Fightful informed GUNTHER that if his title reign continues after SummerSlam this weekend and he is still the title holder by August 28th, he could be defending the championship in The Honky Tonk Man’s hometown.

GUNTHER could break Honkey Tonk Man’s record reign of 454 days 11 days later on September 7th. When asked about a possible open challenge match against The Honky Tonk Man, GUNTHER said he was unsure if he would chop him when asked because he was retired.

When Fightful asked GUNTHER about his upcoming title defense against Drew McIntyre, he said he was looking forward to it. The former NXT UK Champion said: “Drew’s career so far has been impressive, but I am just getting started.” GUNTHER added that he is not intimidated, and he has always wanted a singles match with McIntyre.

Fightful told GUNTHER that Fightful members voted his match against Sheamus at Clash at the Castle as the match of the year. GUNTHER was asked to describe how he felt after he went through a match like that, and he said, “To some degree, there is some fulfillment, but everything happens so fast that it’s hard to sit back sometime to enjoy and reflect.”

GUNTER went on to tell us that Clash at the Castle was very good for him because that was the first time he could showcase himself to a large audience. He also mentioned that he’s focusing on the present instead of looking back or forward. Likewise, The Ring General said he does not reminisce about his past or dream about the future. GUNTHER said when he’s retired or if he has a break, he will take the time to look back and enjoy a lot of it.

Fightful told GUNTHER he is known for his chops, but we wanted to know who chopped him the hardest. He noted that it was a great question; it hurts him just as much as it hurts everyone else. However, he recalled when Pentagon (Penta El Zero Miedo) hit him because he was busted wide open immediately. GUNTHER would also mention Sheamus and Drew McIntyre as two stars who have chopped him the hardest.

However, he could not name anyone specific when asked who he chopped the hardest.

Fightful wrapped up the interview by wishing him luck at SummerSlam.

Comments

Unrelated Sean (I always miss Q/As) but do you think Kenny’s comment about appearing on collision is a hint that punk vs elite will happen? I was under the assumption as soon as they re-signed we’d likely see that story line happen as they probably used it as leverage during the negotiations.
