Details behind Switchblade Jay White, WWE and AEW

"Switchblade" Jay White is in AEW, and it's official.

White signed with All Elite Wrestling on what Fightful Select has confirmed is a multi-year contract. Fightful was able to learn that the deal was in place ahead of WWE WrestleMania 39, and WWE sources were aware that he would not be coming in by then.

White's impending free agency first hit our radar around Wrestle Kingdom, when we learned WWE had interest in White. In the following weeks, WWE were even confident they'd land White. Along the way we're told that Triple H and William Regal both showed interest. However, WWE higher ups said that the company "failed to communicate properly along the process," before noting that AEW landing him over WWE was could have been product of Vince McMahon's returns and the lack of main roster hires since then. There were communications between Jay White and both WWE and AEW.

There were even tentative creative plans made for Jay White in WWE. While higher ups knew time was ticking on getting a deal done, there were some in the company as of last week that were hoping WWE still landed him, which didn't happen.

And Thank you Triple H now book the ppl who came back….where is Nakamura at least he would be on tv if Vince was in charge

Kenny Williams

Any news on the draft?

Ryan

Thanks again Vince.

So, as per usual, Vince ruins whatever he touches, and in this case it led to Jay signing with AEW going "DON'T LET ME NEAR THAT MAN!!"

CSDX

But it turned out they weren't actually selling, and you should always be working to sign great talent when available. Jay is above most/all the recently signed people and would make an immediate impact (assuming you book it correctly... which...)

WWE's fumble is AEW's gain. Love that he's All Elite.

I think he'll be a natural fit for AEW but WWE would have had a top guy straight out the box

Also it seems like WWE is on a hiring freeze maybe due to the merger? I think SRS said WWE hasnt added a wrestler in 2023?

Scott Newcomb

Exactly. Even if someone is selling a little ice cream shop down the street, the first thing they’re doing is either cutting costs or maintaining costs to make it seem as profitable as possible.

DC

What a miss by WWE

Aimee Van Der Heyden

Any time a company is looking to sell, the first directive is to maintain or cut costs. Also, if WWE’s structure is as you described then Vince/Hunter have no say on who gets fired and hired? So basically every internet complaint for the past 3 years is invalid?

DC

Sounds like Paul dropped the Ball ... Or knife.

slick

Massive fumble😂

Jake Salazar

Maybe they didn't wanna increase payroll with a pending sale

Charles Lee Ray

Who was more focused on the sale/merger? Talent Relations and HR should be the departments signing wrestlers, and they have little (HR) or nothing (Talent Relations) to do with handling the merger.

It does seem like Vince return was the main contributor as WWE went on a hiring freeze. I would loved to of seen Jay White in Triple H run WWE I think he would of done very well under Hunter. But with how things are now I think AEW the right fit. Hopefully six months from now Endevour give Vince the boot & Trips take back full control. Happy for Jay regardless

Matt Hennessy

It’s almost as if they were focused on the sale/merger.

DC

So when you say the "company", who in the company are you referring to? Trips, Regal, Prichard, talent relations... Just wondering

Douglas Johnson

So they messed it up in a few ways, not just because of Vince. But he probably felt safer going to AEW because he knew the sale was coming sooner or later and that Vince would have more say when that happened. I’m just glad he signed with AEW, I didn’t want to see him go to WWE.

FWPJR.
