Well, I was excited for Erick to leave his entourage behind and am glad it happened it a non-violent and non-deceitful manner. Why was I excited? Erick respects the opinion of people around him, but very rarely does his own opinion align perfectly with them. Rather, he wants to improve the whole wide-world and the only places the guards can't follow are where civilized society is barest, so, he's bringing it with him with tons of magical power.

Esp. since range is reduced in the Underworld. Every darn time everything is perfectly set-up in this book and we can finally see all the pieces, the entire game changes. Like, seriously, ah, we're going to Shadow's Feast and learning about the enemy, and finding out who these shades are and setting up antagonists. Nah. That grand-conflict happened much sooner. Now, oh, we're going to Oceanside and resolving our position on dragons and magical education in the world. We're picking sides and putting all the hints together at an actual academy. Nope, we're not doing that. Once the stage is set, that's when everything gets confusing again. It's fun.
