As the plane goes faster and faster the prop has to increase pitch. Above a certain point the increase in pitch starts to hurt efficiency. Think of a prop blade at 90 degrees. It's going to have zero efficiency because although it has a lot of pitch, it's can't pull the plane forward at all. A pure jet moves the plane forward by expelling exhaust gasses, not by corkscrewing through the air (turbofans do both).

Question: Why does prop efficiency fall off with increased velocity, let jet efficiency stay reasonably constant? Both involve rotating blades moving air. Is it beause one is ducted, one un ducted? Or beause in jets there is a certain ram air effect to feed the compressor/fan which balances out an efficiency loss, where with a prop it's just lost on spillage as it were?
