Harry Ricardo Book Added to Drive

I put the 1941 edition of "The High Speed Internal Combustion Engine" into Research Folder number one. The book is by Harry Ricardo and is quite important as it was the bible of piston engine design back then, and to a large extent still is today.

I'm using this book a bit in my explanation of fuel octane in WW2 airplanes.

Hi Christoffer. Usually it was just a question of increasing the manifold pressure. In most cases that meant either spinning the turbocharger faster or on planes like the P-51 or Corsair, opening the throttle more. They usually put in a different type of spark plugs as well.

A followupp question about octane ratings. How much work was required to utilize the higer octane ratings in existing motors. could you change the motor depending on availability ?

You say Harry Ricardo's book is on the drive. Where do I find the drive? Please point me in the right direction. Thanks!

Thank you for the information. Is Methanol injection of any benefit to an turbocharged engine when rapid acceleration is required in a automotive application or would the time delay make it not beneficial to use.

Hi David, Aviation 100 "Low Lead" has about 10x more lead than leaded auto gas, so in cars it tends to foul spark plugs like crazy.

I remember reading an article about the incompatibility of using high octane Aviation gasoline in a automobile engine do to its different composition and could not recall the full explanation why just wanted confirm if that was correct or not, thanks.

That question will be answered via video in under two hours, but basically yes. Automotive ratings in the US are different and the composition of fuels are different. it's possible to have two very different gasoline, both with 100 octane.

I second this question.

Andrew MacDougall

Is high octane Av gas of different composition than auto fuel of the same octane rating?

David Stange Jr

Thanks Greg. Keep up the good work! :)

Hi David, you can find all the folders by scrolling through my posts. Research Folder 1 is here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1bgfmcl2m1n_qFbe1H6DA6z1NLjfyCUL6

Thanks a lot Greg - I'm delighted! The only thing is though ..... how do I access Research Folder number one?
