Help Launch the Forthcoming Jahir and Vasiht'h Novel!

On Saturday I mentioned that I'd challenged people to hit a certain goal with the Kickstarter, the prize for that being that my November release would be the novel that tells how Vasiht'h and Jahir go back to Anseahla to pick up the adorable bundles of centaur joy: Vasiht'h's children.

Boy howdy, did I underestimate how much you all wanted another milk-and-cookies book. In short, we're getting that book, and everyone who backs the Kickstarter will get an e-copy of it when it's done (probably in early November).

A lot of readers tell me they wish I would write more of X or Y, and while I'm sometimes amenable, I can't always justify it if I want to keep groceries on the table. These days, though, we have tools that allow you to make those side projects possible. This is the first time I've asked you to crowdfund a novel you want to see... and trust me, I'm watching the results very carefully to see if this is something I should do more often.

If you feel strongly about this book, and about me knowing that this is a viable business model, I encourage you to show up and be counted! Even $1 will get you the book when it's done. It's going to be called Heartskein, and it's not just about Jahir and Vasiht'h's trip, but about Vasiht'h's father, and Professor Palland, and Haladir once-Nuera Galare, and I think it's going to be great. 💖

Y'all are fantastic, by the way. If no one's said so lately, consider it said. 😊

Hi Anonymous! My understanding is that the current Kickstarter will feature exactly what you’re looking for (quiet companionable times before/after the viscerally unsettling stuff that happened in the ‘main’ books). Check it out! (I would be better able to gauge whether the KS meshes with your interests but according to your profile you don’t support any of the creators on Patreon? Consider a dollar in the Jaguar tip jar; the Caturday photos alone are worth a buck, and they are entirely without unsettling content!)

I believe the original commentor was asking about the Prince's Game books, which are a difficult read. They deal with a war, and the first one Even the Wingless does include torture and rape. Vasiht'h is involved in the war. I would not say he is mutilated - he does survive with wounds. I would advise reading the Prince's Game summary, as it includes all the information from those books, including when V makes his decision about kids. The summary is free to Patreon members! There is also commentary about families in Healer's Wedding and Farmer's Crown.

I think sometimes darkness has to exist in order for there to be light. And milk and cookies are more enjoyable when they're a contrast to past discomfort. I also think that Vasit'h probably doesn't feel that he was mutilated. He feels stronger for what he's lived through.

The fifth book, 'Family' has a sequence that can be unsettling, but it's not very long, and in the end everone is unharmed. It's quite important for the story, though. The rest of the books are mostly heartwarming. And a bit scary in the Heartstorm book.

You do realise that you only have to put up a dollar to get the J&V book... You don't get the short story comp but the new book is for Everyone who contributes.

Your warnings about that series (either about the series as a whole or content warnings and snippets of the last books) made me think that it might not be my cup of tea. In particular the one snippet you posted where Vasiht’h was mutilated set that impression firmly. But I’m always up for milk-and-cookies Jahir and Vasiht’h! Those were the first books of yours I read. It sounds like I may have missed some relevant content about them. Did any of the decision making about the kids, etc, happen “on screen”, and in what book(s) if so?

Jahir and Vasiht'h actually helped me realize the relationship I had with my brother because I had something to compare it to. So I am also really grateful for their existence and would really like to share them a lot in every way possible.

Don't have money to throw at the kickstarter but I am so buying the book when it comes out and it will definitely come out thanks to everyone loving that adorkable non-romantic couple so much. Though if I can put in a slightly selfish suggestion for audio books for the Dreamhealer's series as a kickstarter one day maybe? I have an adopted brother who has difficulties when it comes to reading but he likes the sound of the books and the characters, and would like to know more about them.

Indeed.

If we are fantastic it's only because you inspire us to be so. ;-)
