Changes to Jaguar Patreon, 2019

Some of you have already noticed the look of my Patreon page changing along with the tiers and tier rewards! So I thought I’d explain what I’m going to be doing next, and why.

As you know, I am now a full-time writer and artist! Which is great, because after running the numbers, I’ve discovered the way to maintain my income involves writing 5-7 books a year and it’s going to take a full-time effort to pull that off. I think I can swing this, but only if I am honest with myself about whether I’m focusing on things I can’t afford to spend a ton of time on. And one of the things I spend a ton of time on is Patreon… in the sense of “I give away more content for less money than almost every artist and writer I’ve researched.”

Creating stuff for you to enjoy takes time and effort, and if I don’t want to end up in a cube again, I have to be more realistic about what I can do and what I should be charging.

I can see some of you getting nervous. Don’t worry! The changes aren’t major. Here’s the new plan:

We’re looking then at a four-day posting schedule (down from 6):

With ad hoc postings for news or announcements when they come up.

You are, of course, welcome to pledge any amount and not select a tier if you’re not interested in the rewards, or overpay a tier if you feel like buying me extra groceries. I will be grateful.

Special Offer

Many of you were already overpledging your tiers, and I’m grateful. (Please be sure to select a specific tier so you’ll be able to see those awards!) For those of you who decide to move up a tier, I’d like to show my appreciation by sending a wallpaper to everyone who moves up to the $5 tier, and a sticker to everyone who moves up to the $10 tier. I've got three different designs for the sticker, too! I think they're all fun. This special offer’s good for the next two weeks, so you have plenty of time to decide whether you want to jump up! I’ll be drawing that wallpaper on Twitch, so be sure to follow me there if you want to watch it happen.

Discord

...which brings me to Discord. If you’re pledging at a level that grants you Discord access and haven’t tried it yet, I really encourage you to do so. The people using my server tell me the Discord server reward alone is worth the price of their pledge. People who are on multiple servers often tell me how unusual mine is: not only because I’m on it so frequently (because apparently fan discords are rarely visited by the creators), but because it’s active and the vibe is courteous, fun, and supportive. If you haven’t tried it yet, here’s the link to how to claim your Discord reward.

So that’s the deal on the Patreon changes.

Throughout my career, I’ve always tried to be honest about the cost of doing business as a creative professional, and I'm committed to explaining why artists of every kind should be paid for their efforts. Making stuff takes time and effort; packaging it in a way other people can consume and easily enjoy is also work. As you all know, because you’re awesome people, it’s naïve to point out that ‘as an artist you’d be doing art anyway.’ Artists often do stop doing art for any number of reasons, and chief among them are things like ‘people don’t appreciate it’ or ‘if I spend time on this, that’s wasted time because society says so’ and ‘I’m too tired to do this because I’ve had to work an eight hour day already.’ And the doodle on someone’s paper doesn’t magically appear in your email every morning: it has to be scanned or photographed (if physical), cropped and resized for monitors, watermarked, uploaded somewhere, framed in some kind of post or email, described and sent.

Writing’s the same way… the difference between the noodling a writer might do for themselves, for fun, is a world away from the polished product that lands in your hands as a physical book or on your device as a formatted ebook, with a coherent plot and enjoyable characters and front- and backmatter that make you feel the important part of the author’s ecosystem that you are.

I appreciate each and every one of you! Whether you’re handing me a dollar a month or $100, the fact that you’re willing to compensate me for my work is important. It makes you part of a revolution—the one that boldly states that creative professionals aren’t doing invisible work that ‘deserves to be free’ because ‘art belongs to everyone’ and ‘artists would do it anyway.’ Paying artists is a counter-cultural act of rebellion, and by embarking on it you are upholding a pretty amazing standard in defiance of a world that is intent on reblogging or reusing unattributed work and shrugging it off as okay because ‘everybody’s doing it.’

You should be proud.

As always, I’m honored to be one of your chosen entertainers. I hope you’ll stick around for an amazing 2019. This is going to be a great year.

How does one apply for the grant fund? While I love all your content I camr to support you on Patreon for acess to audiobooks and I can't afford to chip in another five a month to make the ten dollar tier. I would really love to continue supporting your work!

Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately, the $5 tier doesn't have anything I'm interested in. I hate to lose the business reports. It makes more sense to me to save the money and back your Kickstarters for the audiobooks since I really like those. I'm glad you still have the grant fund. I hope it helps those who need it.

Don't worry! I am not starving, and I don't believe in emotional arm-twisting. You don't have to feel guilt about not supporting. *tucks blanket around you* If you feel strongly about unlocking the $5+ levels, we still have the grant fund; I can't touch that money (literally, it's unavailable to me even though it's there) unless someone uses it to join the Patreon, so it's not a hand-out in any form. I wish more people would use it, so I can have the money in it. -_- http://mcahogarth.org/patreon-grant-application/

Man, this hurts. I love your work and following your progress, the business posts were my favorite and I live on audiobooks, but I just can't afford the $10. I'm planning on dropping back to $1 so I can hopefully support you in other ways (like Kickstarter). I also got lost in trying to keep up with your universe and got disheartened which lead to loss of interest. I'm sorry. (Too many crossovers.) Discord was never really a draw for me and made me feel isolated whenever I tried to get involved because it was so active (not a bad thing, my life demands too much time to keep me engaged on Discord). I'm really sorry I have to take a step down when you seem to need the support the most. You are amazing and one of the best authors out there. Keep up the great work and good luck. Thank you for all the great adventures.

Don't be afraid to just lurk on Discord if that is the level of participation that you are up for. I find a lot of the discussions to be really interesting to just observe.

I had not used Discord before, and don't use it for anything else. I have zero regrets for picking it up just for this community.

i'm, wondering if your monthly summaries are general posts or $10 posts. If $10 will you also do general posts of planned projects for the year/season?

I will miss the lunch bags but totally honor your reasoning. Are there scenarios under which the lunch bags might come back?

Got to the twitch and tried to ask but didn’t work. Were you using copic markers?

I will very much miss the daily "flash art" of the lunch bags, but can understand that the amount of effort required is not necessarily cost effective. I'm not a Discord user (just never got into it) and not into audio books, but don't want to miss out on stories, so will try the $10 tier for now. (Can only afford to do this by shedding another Patron)

As a fairly shy person I know exactly what Erin means about the Discord forum, but I have to say that whenever I do take the plunge it's always been a very pleasant experience. I'm going to have to have a think about the tiers, It's a bit of a leap up to $10 but then I do love the audiobooks....

I will also miss the lunch bags but I also agree that they would to go away one day anyway, just like one commenter said about daughter growing up. I did up my pledge to the 10$ level with help. I like the business posts. Audio also sounds interesting. See how it goes. The discord doesn't work well for me. Poor internet perhaps and I tried twitch but again it was poor. I will try in the library tonight and see if that makes a difference. But like someone said, I don't know what to say anyway. I'm too much of a loner I guess. Look forward to more books though and love the art!

Echoing Amy's comment that the lunch bags are pretty much my favorite part of the $5 tier. Though being honest, I knew they would go away sooner or later, because children grow, and all 3 of mine grew out of wanting to carry their lunches from home sometime in high school. Girls may be more patient with the visible-to-others mother-love those customized lunch bags represent, but I'm betting that soon after Smol Jaguar morphs to Young Jaguar, she will not really want them any more. Or will start to hide them from most of her schoolmates. However, dear Jaguar, you do what you need to do to make your business work for your family. I understand that photographing and posting those lunch bag pictures doubles or triples the time they take up in your day, and that maybe you need that time for more important or more lucrative work, however you define it.

As a new person, I've finally been dipping my toe in the Discord chats, & been extremely impressed with the wide range of discussions, how civility is maintained, and the general kindness. I'll miss the lunchbags, but more books is a definite win. --filkferengi

Yeah, this is really distressing. I've been struggling for a while and now... Well, my $1 contribution is a lot of money to me. I definitely can't afford $10, but... Argh.

gotta make the business work; thanks for the update, and I appreciate the details & insight
