Hi Louise, you should be able to follow the values of the cast and cast shadow independent of having a background. Best to take the value relationships as literally as possible.

So I had a question I was not able to ask on the group crit as I joined later. Stephen, I was wondering, if your background irl is dark, and you decide not to put a dark background in, does the value of your cast shadow need to adjust to what that shadow should look like if the background was white, or do you try to take it down as dark as it appears on say the black or brown wall you are using? I struggled with knowing how low key to really go, given that we decided not to darken around it. I realize it probably doesn’t matter for this exercise, but it might be useful to understand how that works in case we are making decisions like that in other scenarios (e.g. using a photo reference where we want to change the colour of a background). Many thanks.

Great video Stephen. Feel a little embarrassed now realising that with my drawing I didn't put the 'background' value of the cast in. So the whole thing looks over exposed because it is the white of the paper. I guess that's why they call it practicing!
