Block In Concepts, Pt. 2

This is the first of two parts and it goes through the tools and concepts I am using in the beginning of a block in. My paper here is Stonehenge. You can see my paper and toning and stretching process here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/my-definitive-31189698

Block In Concepts, Pt. 2

Thank you Stephen! this was amazing. I realised up until this lesson how much I over eagerly pushed values in my drawings, which created a major lack of unity in them. Really, learnt a lot, thanks again!

Thanks, Sandy! part 1 is just above this post.

Love part two, where is part one? Excellent information!

Love it. โ€œBreak the bundle of twigs one straw at a time, not the whole bundle at onceโ€ ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป. Now I need to go do that ๐Ÿ‘‹

So the quick sketch is taking the drawing through all phases, past block in, but in less time, the purpose being to bring the drawing to a sort of completion? What would you recommend would be a better practice then, the block in or the quick sketches?

Adina

Block in drawings will have a more limited value scale and quite a bit more unity in the shadows./half tones. Block in's will have a pretty solid three value scale, not more.

Hi Stephen! I believe this tutorial is amazing! I watched both parts and took notes from your comments. You made very clear the steps needed in the block in stage and the things we should consider like the line quality. I always get swept away in describing contours using curved lines, adding too much detail and like you said, adding accents all over the place. I will do my best to follow this tutorial and actually keep myself in check asking about what I'm actually doing at each stage. I do have a question about the difference between leaving a drawing in the block in stage and quick sketches. As you said, I'd like to create a practice in which I would fill a sketchbook with these block in drawings, that seems like a great idea! But what would you say would be different in a quick sketch? What would be your thought process vs the block in? Thank you!

Adina

Yes, it should have auto posted.... glitch.
