The Turtle Library #3: Early Edition

Another tool has changed!  This week I made the big little decision to change my primary inking implement for this comic from a faber castel pitt pen to a Tombo marker like THIS.  I made this decision after making these warm up drawings before a Story Planet workshop:


The thickness of the marker really forces you to pick which lines you want to express a drawing with, which lends itself to the sort of simpler drawing style I've been drawn to lately.  Makes it easier to sit down and draw out some picture sentences rather than slowly working on enunciating each syllable.

I also developed a new technique for shading the comic. Using the same graphite wash I tried out last week, I simply flip my inked page over on top of my lightbox, and lay down the shading on the back.  This is both faster, and, since it is thicker paper, it also gets rid of the obscene amount of scanner-visible wrinkles the wash created on the transparent paper I was using before.
