Her dad explained on one page during the punishment onesie bit. However; given that Brittany isn't exactly subtle about it: a plaque in the kitchen in the start of the comics, clothing that does nothing to hide it, it's amazing Emily hadn't already figured it out. Then again, as Ulf has said, Emily is a bit of a derp.
