“I need you.”

Six hours ago that line snapped her out of a panic attack and gave her the strength to take on high society with a smile on her face. Now, it did nothing for her because she knew he didn’t mean it. They were empty words he knew she desperately wanted to hear. He knew she’d always wanted to be needed and loved. He fed her just enough crumbs of affection to stop her from starving and gave her sips of hope so she would perform on command. He was too much of a businessman to get rid of her until he was sure he’d wrung every ounce of usefulness out of her. All her life she’d been running on hopes and dreams. Tonight, they’d been extinguished and her soul along with it.
