“When are you going back to New York?”

She was hyperaware of Roth watching her. It was getting on her nerves. He never said a word, just sat silently, observing her as she watched the waves crash on the shore. She would have suspected he was dozing behind his shades, but the moment she moved, so did he. She couldn’t remember the last time she saw a phone in his hand.

“When are you going back to New York?” she asked.

“When the time’s right.”

“You’re wasting your time here. You should be capitalizing on those connections you made at the Ball.”

“They’ll be there when we get back.”

She stiffened at the ‘we.’ She had convinced herself that she could stay here forever. Hearing him talk about resuming their life in the city made her hands ball into fists.

As I mentioned in the August update, I started book 4 from scratch. Many of the previous snippets I posted back in 2024 have been altered or discarded completely. At this point, the book is made up of a jumble of fragmented scenes as I experiment with different scenarios and try to get a pulse on their ever evolving relationship. I'll try to post passages when I can, but at this point in the writing process, snippets will more like this until the first draft is complete.
