There was a reason why he’d been drawn to Roth from the first. He recognized that Roth had the same ruthless nature that drove his father to build their empire. It had been passed onto him. He hadn’t seen that fire in his peers or his children, but he saw it from a mile away in a boy from a poverty stricken background. And his instincts had been spot on. Roth would do whatever it took to accomplish what he set his mind to. Whatever the cost, he would pay it, to get to the next rung on the ladder.

“If you had a shred of decency in you, you’d let my daughter live the rest of her life in peace.” When that got no response from him, he added, “But we both know you won’t, so what’s it to be? I decimate your new beginning or you let go of the sham of a marriage that will never get you where you want to be?”

He forced himself to hold Roth’s unsettling gaze.

“She can have her divorce."

The relief that swept through him was only surpassed by grim satisfaction that he'd been right all along. Business always came first. Nothing got in the way of them building their empires.

“But I have conditions.”
