Snippets from Maximus' POV the night he blackmails Roth.

“What brings you here at this hour, Maximus?”

Roth poured Scotch into two glasses. He didn’t offer the second one. He left it on the table, a subtle taunt and sign of disrespect. Boy didn’t realize he was a master at this game.

“The only thing we have in common. My daughter.”

Roth raised the glass to his mouth, sipped. “You disowned her.”

**“She realized the error of her ways, marrying a man like you. She begged for my forgiveness and is willing to do whatever it takes to be welcomed back into the family fold.”**

The white lie caused a flicker of emotion in those demon eyes of his, but it was concealed too quickly for him to identify and use to his advantage.

“Where is she?”

“Home, where she belongs.”

“She didn’t stay at Tuxedo Park.” Roth didn’t bother to hide the fact that he had men watching his every move. “Your men nearly ran mine off the road to stop them from following her.”

“Did you think I’d make it easy for you?”

“I need to talk to her.”

He shook his head as he descended into the sunken seating area. He made his way to the linear fireplace. Had Roth lowered the temperature deliberately, knowing he was sensitive to the cold? It didn’t matter. He wouldn’t be staying long, anyway. He wished his body could withstand the confrontation. Soon, he would have to sit, and he’d be damned before he made himself at home in enemy territory.
