“You’re the worst thing that’s ever happened to me! You’re still punishing me and you don’t have to! I hate myself enough for the both of us!” she shrieked.
He clasped her face “Stop it.”
“You wanted to break me,” she said raggedly. “You succeeded! This is me, broken. I don’t have anything left.” She shoved at him. “I’m done. You hear me?”
He ducked his head down and pressed his bristly cheek to hers. “Stop, princess, you’re going to make yourself sick.”
She surged beneath him, fighting tooth and nail to claw his face. “Don’t call me that!” The endearment was a cruel joke that pushed her over the edge.
The more she tried to contain her emotions, the more they spilled everywhere. Humiliation and sorrow dragged her beneath icy waters, stealing her breath and knocking her heart out of rhythm.
“Breathe,” he said gruffly, clasping her face between trembling hands. “I’m here.”
She averted her face as she tried to catch her breath. She couldn’t deal with his suffocating presence when she was already being torn apart by an inner maelstrom that threatened to consume her.

I'm reading this again and Roth really should go easy on Jasmine or she'll die bc of stress and heartbreak at this point 😭 his hands are trembling too what's going on?? It's already book 4 😭

(i) something embarrassing happens at Dai's fashion show, (ii) or makes a bad investment with her inheritance, (iii) or could it be the 'big secret' from book 1 cliffhanger has been revealed, maybe Maximus is not her father but someone else, perhaps Uncle Warren - Roth was just trying to protect her all along... (It's from 'Bitter Sins' which is book 4, so cannot be the showdown scene at start of book 3?..)

2024-01-30 01:04:57 +0000 UTCNo, I think it’s during their showdown at the start of book 3 and this is the point when Jasmine gives up. There is another snippet later on in this scene where Jasmine recommits to staying with Roth and all is well.
